1 Introduction
The Welch Allyn Service Tool is a software application that
identifies, notifies, and manages maintenance activities on
supported Welch Allyn products. This tool installs software
updates, upgrades, and additional features including applications
(when available).

There are two levels of functionality with the Welch Allyn Service
Tool:

1. Silver level is available with the purchase of a platform device


which enables basic access to device information.

2. Gold level requires participation in a Technical Training course


online or onsite to receive the activation license number, and
allows access to functional verification test and calibration.

You can use the Welch Allyn Service tool to read and access
information about each device or module installed on the device.

• Serial number, software version and other data

• List of maintained devices

• Individual modules attached to the monitor

• Up-to-date list of maintained assets

System requirements
• Supported operating systems: Windows XP.
• Supporting software: .Net Framework 3.5 (included with
installation).
• Driver: WACP USB driver (included with installation).
• Processor: 400 MHz Pentium processor or equivalent
(minimum); 1GHz Pentium processor or equivalent
(recommended).
• RAM: 1 GB (minimum); 2 GB (recommended).
• Hard disk: Up to 10 GB of available space may be required.
• CD ROM drive: Required.
• Display: 800 x 600, 256 colors (minimum); 1024 x 768 high
color, 32-bit (recommended)
• USB: 2.0 (required).
• Antivirus protection (recommended).
• Internet connection (required to download files).

Caution The Welch Allyn Service Tool does not support


SQL Server 2000 or SQL Server 2005.

This Welch Allyn Service Tool installation requires PC


Administrator rights. It also the requires additional installation of
SQL Server 2008 Express Edition with SP1 (if not already
installed), Remote Service Delivery System (PartnerConnect),
and Axeda Desktop Service. These additional installations are a
part of the Welch Allyn Service Tool installation.

Welch Allyn Service Tool installation


1. If you have a previous version of the Welch Allyn Service Tool
installed on your PC, uninstall it, and delete the ”Welch Allyn
Service Tool” folder.

2. Insert the Welch Allyn Service Tool CD into the PC. The CD
auto launches, and the installation begins automatically.

If the CD does not auto launch, or if you have downloaded the


Welch Allyn Service Tool from the internet, navigate to the
Welch Allyn Service Tool directory. Double-click Setup.exe.

3. Follow the onscreen prompts to accept the licensing


agreements.

4. Click Yes to reboot the computer. If you do not reboot the


computer, the Welch Allyn Service Tool drivers will not install.

If necessary, the installation process continues with SQL


Server 2008 Express Edition with SP1.

If there is an existing installation of SQL Server Express 2008,


the Welch Allyn Service Tool uses the existing instance of the
application. You should have the instance name and password
available for Step 6.

Note The SQL Server 2008 Express installation will detect


instances of SQL Server 2000 or SQL Server 2005;
however, the Welch Allyn Service Tool does not support
these instances.

5. Follow the onscreen prompts to continue the SQL Server


Express 2008 installation. Click Next to continue. The SQL
Server Connection window displays.

6. Select the your SQL Server connection. Click Next.

If you installed SQL Server in Step 5, the application prefills


the instance and authentication information.

If there is an existing installation of SQL Server Express 2008:

a. Select or enter the SQL Server instance name you would


like to use.

b. Enter the appropriate authentication information. If you do


not enter the SQL Server information, the installation will
not continue.

7. Click Next to accept the default destination folder.

8. Click Next to continue the application installation, and then


click Finish to complete the SQL Server 2008 Express Edition
with SP1 installation. The Remote Service Delivery System
(PartnerConnect) setup begins.

9. Click Next to begin the PartnerConnect installation.

10.Accept the PartnerConnect license agreement. Click Next.

11.Fill in the required fields, which are indicated with an asterisk.


Click Next.

Required field Input data


Serial number Locate the license number on the CD. If you downloaded the
Welch Allyn Service Tool, enter any seven digit number. This
is your serial number, record it for later use.
Organization/Facility name Your organization.
Location/Department name Your department name.
Region Choose your region from the drop-down list.
Country Choose your country from the drop-downlist.

12.Click Next to start the PartnerConnect installation, and then


Post-install tasks screen displays.

13.Check the Axeda Desktop Server installation box. Click


Next to continue the installation.

14.Click Finish. The InstallAnywhere application starts, and then


the Axeda Desktop Server Installation displays.

15.Click Next to continue, accept the license agreement. Click


Next. The Default folder location window displays.

16.Click Next to accept the folder location. Click Next to begin


installing Partner Connect. The Post-installation tasks window
open.

17.Check the Install the Axeda Desktop Server box. Click Next.

18.Click Finish. The InstallShield Wizard closes and the Start


Axeda Desktop Service installation window displays.

19.Click Next and the license agreement window displays.

20.Click Next to accept the default file location for the installation
files.

21.Select the Install as a service checkbox. Click Next.

22.Select the Start service checkbox. Click Next.

23.Enter the server name (Axeda Desktop Server). Click Next.

24.Review the setup information, and click Install on the pre-


installation page. The Axeda Desktop Server installation
begins.

25.Click Done. The Welch Allyn Service Tool installation is


complete.

USB drivers for Welch Allyn devices


installation
1. Insert the Welch Allyn Service Tool CD into the PC. The CD
auto launches, and the installation begins automatically.

2. Click Cancel to stop the Welch Allyn Service Tool installation.


Go to Start -> My Computer and right-click the CD ROM
drive. Click Explore.

3. Open the USB Drivers folder. There are two sub-folders. Open
the folder that corresponds to your operating system.

a. For folder x64, double-click the WAGUSB64.msi file.

b. For folder x86, double-click the WAGUSB.msi file.

This launches the Thin Client USB Driver installation setup.

4. Click Next to accept the default driver file location.

5. Click Install to begin the Thin Client USB Driver installation.

6. Click Finish to complete the installation process.

3 Operation
Initial login
The Welch Allyn Service Tool requires the application
administrator to create user accounts prior to initial use.

1. Launch the Welch Allyn Service Tool. The application displays


the ADMIN account as the default access account. The
default password field is left blank. Click Log on.

2. Select Administration -> Manage accounts.

3. Add a user:

a. Click Create new.

b. Enter user information. Account information consists of User


name, User ID, Password, and user type attributes. The
recommended setup is to select only one user type field.

Create a new user account with administrator privileges


and delete the application default ADMIN account.

c. Click Add to enter the user into the database. The window
returns to the User Account Management window.

d. Repeat this step until all users are added.

4. Click the X in the upper right corner of the Manage accounts


popup window to close the window.

5. If you prefer clinicians to log in to the application, select


Administration -> Settings and check the box for Require
clinical log on. Click Save.

Install an upgrade license


When you purchase an upgrade license for the Welch Allyn
Service Tool or for a supported product, you will receive an
authorization code from Welch Allyn Customer Service. This
code enables users to activate the new feature(s) through the
Welch Allyn Service Tool Install License feature.

Equipment:

• Computer (see System requirements)


• Welch Allyn medical device requiring a license upgrade
• USB 2.0/5-pin Mini-B cable, gold, 6 feet

1. Connect the USB cable to the mini-B USB port on the Welch
Allyn device and the opposite end of the USB cable to the PC.

2. Launch the Welch Allyn Service Tool and log on with your
User name and Password.

3. Select Administration -> Install license from the Welch


Allyn Service Tool menu bar.

4. Select the Service tool license or Medical device license


option.

5. Highlight the Welch Allyn device that requires an upgrade, and


then click Select.

6. Enter the authorization code, and click Activate. The license


upgrade activates immediately.

If there is any error in the activation process, confirm that you


entered the correct authorization code, check your internet
connection, and try the installation process again. If you
cannot clear the problem, contact Welch Allyn Technical
Support for assistance.

Upgrade device firmware


Welch Allyn delivers device firmware to the Welch Allyn Service
Tool through the internet using our PartnerConnect. If you receive
this content by another media, copy the firmware files to
C:\Progam Files\Welch Allyn\WelchAllyn Service Tool\Inbox.

Equipment:

• Computer (see System requirements)


• Welch Allyn medical device requiring an upgrade
• USB 2.0/5-pin Mini-B cable, gold, 6 feet

1. Connect the USB cable to the mini-B USB port on the Welch
Allyn device and the opposite end of the USB cable to the PC.

2. Launch the Welch Allyn Service Tool and log on with your
User name and Password.

3. Select the connected medical device and go to the Upgrade


tab.

The Upgrade tab lists the device’s current firmware version


number, and identifies modules with firmware available for
upgrade.

4. Select a module, click Upgrade or select the main device, and


then click Upgrade All to install available firmware to your
product. Follow the onscreen instructions to complete the
upgrade process.

Click Read release notes to review the release information.

5. While the firmware is upgrading, the Welch Allyn Service Tool


application displays a progress indicator.

During the upgrade process the device powers on and off.


This is normal. You cannot perform other functions until the
upgrade is complete.
