“Honey, I shrunk the ???”
“Honey, I shrunk the dog”!! Four or five months ago, I reported
that The Jet was a burly 105 pounds. Truly a Jumbo Jet or at least
a close facsimile. Consultation with the vet people suggested that
The Jet was overly Jumbo and should be shrunk and downsized.
After months of kibble reduction and more exercise he recently
checked in with a weight loss of 10 pounds. From Jumbo he has
gone now to being the Big Jet. Following further consultation with
the vet folks, it became evident that they want to see a Fighter
Jet, and so the kibble reduction and exercise will continue for
probably another 10 to 15 pounds!!! The strange thing is . . . the
Jet doesn’t act any hungrier now than he ever did. Which means,
he still lets you know whenever he thinks that kibble time is close
by getting very bouncy!!
“Honey, I shrunk the Wife”!! Yes siree, The Jet is not the only one
on reduced kibble and increased exercise. The missus has been
losing a few pounds herself!! Unlike The Jet, however, she hasn’t
been anywhere near as friendly come meal time. I get particularly
concerned though, when I find her sniffing around The Jet’s food
dish. If it ever came to a kibble fight, I am afraid of what damage
might happen to my Boy!!
“Honey, I shrunk the Mikie”!! Yup . . . me too. Right along with
The Jet, I have dropped about 10 pounds also!! It just didn’t seem
fair that he was targeted for kibble reduction all by himself. True
leadership is all about NOT expecting others to suffer while we
continue to stuff ourselves at the kibble dish. True leadership is
not concerned about getting rid of other’s fat, while ignoring our
own!!
“Honey, I am going to shrink the trees”!! I have been studying
up on modern woodlot management and one of the key findings,
is that trees need to be thinned out just like carrots. Trees that
are growing too close together tend to be more deformed, weaker
and more subject to disease. By spacing trees properly the overall
health of the forest can be improved and overall wood growth per
acre or hectare can be improved significantly. This means that
healthy forests are removing more carbon from the atmosphere.
Which is a good thing!! Perhaps, more on this topic in a followup
“Ravings”.
So during the next few months I am going to be very busy, but
the most important project will be to keep The Jet leaner and
faster than the missus, so that he can consistently win the race to
the kibble dish!! 800

Why I Relay
by Patty Howe
In December of 2003, life as I knew it
would change forever. My mother had been
diagnosed with breast cancer and uterine
cancer. In just a matter of moments, the
whole bottom fell out of my world. I had
so many questions but the most burning
question was ‘how could this be happening
to us’
As I went through the motions every day
taking care of my mother’s daily needs,
going to doctor’s appointments, filling out
paperwork and helping her to plan for
her own funeral, I felt overwhelmed and wanted to sit and cry.
Instead, I waited until my mother was in bed for the night and I
went to my room and cried and sobbed until the tears would not
come anymore. I could not let her see what this disease was doing
to me.
She never had the opportunity to decide whether she wanted
to take treatment or not because the cancer spread so rapidly.
Shortly after Christmas that year, she underwent brain surgery to
remove a tumor that would kill her in two weeks if left alone. She
recovered from this surgery remarkably well and we had renewed
hope that she might be able to fight this disease. That hope was
short-lived. While I was still struggling to come to grips with what
this disease was doing to us, my mother had found a peace in her
heart that enabled her to help us accept the reality of what was
happening.
My mother passed away on March 27th, 2004.
On March 22nd of 2010, cancer again struck my family. That day, I
lost my uncle, my friend and another huge part of my heart. Each
and every blow that this disease deals us makes it increasingly
hard to bear.
In these past few years, not only have I lost two very important
people in my life to this disease but I have also had a few friends
who have come face to face with cancer and fought the battle of
their lives. These people are true heroes and have inspired me to
do more to ensure that this disease is eliminated.
Why do I relay? I relay in the hopes that others won’t have to
endure the pain of losing someone they love to this disease. I
relay because I want to help cancer patients and their families
concentrate on fighting this disease. I relay so that they can have
the treatments that they need to fight this disease. But most of
all, I relay in hopes that we can find a cure and eliminate this
disease forever. It is my hope that together, we can make this
happen. Please join us on June 10th 2011, show your support,
buy a luminary, make a donation or enter your team to make a
difference in the lives of cancer patients everywhere. 335

SACC AGM
The Sussex and District Chamber of Commerce hosted its 41st
AGM on March 23rd, 2011, featuring guest speaker Tom Gribbons.
A large group of Chamber members and guests attended to hear
Mr. Gribbons speak about “Poverty Reduction: Why Should
Business Get Involved.”
The Economic and Social Inclusion Corporation leads and
coordinates the implementation of Overcoming Poverty
Together: The New Brunswick Economic and Social Inclusion
Plan. The vision of the plan is “Through the collaboration of
governments, business and non-profit sectors, people living in
poverty and individual citizens, all men, women and children in
New Brunswick shall have the necessary resources to meet their
basic needs and to live with dignity, security and good health.”
Mr. Gregory Zed, Zone Manager of Addictions and Mental
Health Services of the Horizon Health Network Sussex Region
and new 2nd Vice President of the Chamber, sees this as a tangible
action of recognizing the impact of poverty on the mental health
and wellness in our community, “It is truly validating to see the
Chamber taking an active role in our fight against poverty with
the full support of its Executive and Directors.” Sussex has one of
the highest rates of poverty in the province, however, a passionate
group of stakeholders who have been meeting for the past six
months are well on their way to developing a strategy to face the
challenges of poverty. For the business community to recognize
and endorse the work of the committee, of which Mr. Zed is a
founding member, is remarkable and promises to address this
serious issue. “Poverty is everyone’s problem” and the first steps
to ensure no one is left behind despite the economic climate
we are facing. Government leaders, business members and the
community at large have embraced these efforts with a clear
vision to lift citizens out from under the cycle of poverty. “There
is little doubt the positive outcomes of our community efforts will
be a benefit to the health and well being of all our citizens” Zed
concluded.
Following the presentation, President Phil Sellars moved forward
with the business portion of the Annual General Meeting. The
annual reports were adopted and a new slate of officers were
presented and sworn in: President – Phil Sellars (Jonah Place
Inn), 1st Vice President – Don Dobbin (Dobbin Professional
Corp.), 2nd Vice President – Greg Zed (Addictions & Mental
Health), Treasurer – Wendy Stockford (Scotiabank), Secretary
– Jamie Stockford (Turnbull & Kindred CGA); Directors: Lionel

Curves’ Food Drive
Curves Food Drive offers both its active members and new
members an opportunity to give to their community. It is an
important event as it fills shelves that run low this time of year.
This year the Curves Food Drive runs from April 4th - April
17th. New members can join Curves by bringing in two bags of
groceries in lieu of a service fee. It is a win-win situation – better
health for women in our community and food for those less
fortunate.
Curves and its members work to help fill the shelves at both
the Sharing Club and Transition House. The larders are low and
by working with our community partners on this effort we can
make a difference. Members will also be encouraged through
in-house promos to bring in groceries. We have collected over
1000 lbs of groceries in the past. 531
