Introduction

Corporal Punishment is the intentional infliction of pain on the body for the

purposes of punishment. Corporal punishment includes spanking, slapping, punching,

hitting with objects, pinching, and forcing to stand for long periods of times. I created a

survey to assess the beliefs of students on the campus of Tuskegee University about

corporal punishment. I feel that if individuals received corporal punishment, as a child

would spank their children. The gender is also a big factor whether or not a person will

inflict corporal punishment on their children.

This project required me to gather 100 responds from the students on campus.

How I went about during the project is that, I distributed 50 paper surveys around the

campus and also handed some to students that comes in the store I work in. The other 50

came from electronic copies; I copied the link to my survey onto my face book page

where I knew there would be a lot of responds. I was right, I actually got more than 50

responds online.

My project consists of surveying college students about their beliefs of spanking

and corporal punishment. So, therefore, the only age groups that was present in this

survey is the ages between 18-25, although you can find some students to be over the age

of 25 depending on their major and the type of degree they are trying to receive. Most of

the students that completed my survey are around the ages of 18 through 24 and I have a

few that fall in the age group of 25-40 years of age.

On campus, there are various classification that a person may be classified as;

there are as followed: Freshman, sophomore, junior, senior, graduate student, and vet

students. Most of the respondents fell under the age group 21 and under so, of course

most of the respondents would be freshman and sophomore. I also had a couple of

responds from the senior class and also from graduate students. It’s not that often that I

meet vet students so the one respond that I gotten from the vet student came from my

online survey.

It wasn’t any surprise to me that it would be more females taking the survey than

males. I feel that females like to express their opinion about issues and things that are

happening in the society; on the other hand, males feel like if it doesn’t bother them it’s

not a big deal. Probably because I’m a female and can better interact with them has a big

influence on my results. When I was handing out the survey, I felt tension when I would

ask a boy and with a female they showed enthused to take my survey.

Description

There were a 100 responds to my survey about spanking and corporal

punishment. 22 of the respondents said it’s not okay to spank children and 78 of the

respondents said it was okay.

Interpretation

When talking about spanking, it is a lot you must consider. Like for instance,

what kind of spanking and is getting hit by the hand is also spanking. Most of the

respondents stated that yes; it is okay to spank a child as a means of discipline. Although

the respondents said yes, they also stated under what circumstances. Therefore, the

respondents didn’t agree to just spanking the child, it has to be a very serious problem or

at least the child had to do something very devilish.

said yes. 9 of the respondents said no.

Interpretation

The respondents that took this survey were born in the late 80’s, so of course,

there would be a huge number of the respondents that said yes, their parents spank them

as a means of discipline. In the later years, spanking were very popular, you could have

spank your child for just about anything and you could also use whatever item that were

in your site to spank with. In this generation if a parent were to discipline their child by

spanking them, it could case them their freedom; children in this generation now would

call the social service workers on their parents when they are trying to discipline them.

I truly think that parents should be able to use corporal punishment to discipline

their children. As my research shows 86 of the respondents said yes; 13 of the

respondents said no.

Interpretation

I would’ve thought that more of the respondents would have said that no, parents

shouldn’t be allowed to use corporal punishment to discipline their children. To my

surprise, I was wrong more of the respondents said that parents should spank their

children but, also complain how they use to get beatings and how they wouldn’t spank

their children but then saying that it is okay to spank. The people that stated that parents

shouldn’t be allowed to use corporal punishment probably didn’t get spank when they

were growing up. How can you discipline your child with using corporal punishment?

Are there really other methods that don’t involve pain work better? Whatever the

other methods are, 77 of my respondents said yes and 23 said no, that only corporal

punishment will only work.

Interpretation

I wonder what other methods of punishment you can use to discipline a child

without spanking them. Well, 23 of the respondent feel that you could discipline your

child with using corporal punishment while 77 of the respondents said that it is best to

use corporal punishment to discipline your children. I bet that the respondents that said

yes use corporal punishment may have been a victim of corporal punishment and it may

have made them a better person in life; it did make them a better person because now

they are in college ready to start a degree.

Depending on the amount of discipline a person receive as a child can also

affect their future and their interference with the police. 57 respondents said no they

never been in trouble and 43 respondents said yes.

Interpretation

If a person hasn’t been discipline as a child more than likely end up in trouble

with the police. The results of the survey show that 57 of the respondents have not been

in trouble with police and that 43 of the respondents have. The number of respondents

been in trouble is almost equal to the number that said no. This isn’t a simple question

because of the fact that it can consist of anything such as stealing to trespassing. You

could actually see that the results would end this way because of all the previous

questions, each respondent feel that corporal punishment is accepted and necessary.

32 of the respondents under 21 said yes to its okay to spank and 45 of them said

no. 59 of the respondents from the category 21-24 said yes when 39 of them said no. The

age group 25-40 numbers where no in both responds. 9 of the respondents said yes and

17 said no.

Interpretation

This image shows the age of the respondents and how they feel about children

being spank as a means of discipline. The maturity of the respondents the answers differ;

the respondents 21 and under feel that it’s not okay to spank your child, while the older

respondents (21-24) feels that it’s okay to spank your child. It’s because the younger

respondents mind frame is different, they feel like they are still at the age to get punish by

their parents and they feel that it’s not right. If you would think about it, when your

parents have taught you good manners, it helps you further in life.

In between the ages of under 21-24, there were 64 respondents that stated no,

parents shouldn’t be allowed to use corporal punishment. 41 of the respondents stated

that corporal punishment should be allowed.

Interpretation

These response are shocking; how is it that the respondents 21 and under feel that

parents should be allowed to use corporal punishment. The respondents feel that it

shouldn’t be allowed is tied between the age groups of 21-24 and the respondents that are

under 21. They also out beat the respondents that feel its okay. There wasn’t that many

respondents between the age of 25-40 therefore, their results where low in both

responses. Another eye catching fact is that, there were a very low number of respondent,

21-24, feels that parents should be allow to use corporal punishment.

There were in equal number of respondents that stated that they have and have not

gotten a spanking. 42 of the respondents said they have been spank while 44 stated no.

Between the ages 21-24, 43 of the respondents admitted to being spank and 46 of them

said no.

Interpretation

In each category the response are very high; the respondents between the

ages of 18 through 24 both that said yes and no that have been spank as a child. Although

only half of them has been spank as a child, they life is going in the right direction so far.

So, that means that you don’t need corporal punishment to discipline you and teach you

some manners. You only need your parents to take some quality time with a child to

teach them right or wrong.

This a multivariate chart that shows the responds from both male and female on

the same issue (Should parents be allow to use corporal punishment). With the females

between the ages of 18-24, the responds were equal 50/50 that said no parents shouldn’t

be allow to use corporal punishment.

Interpretation

The females under 21 feel that parents should be able to discipline their child

while the responses of the male response are very low. The male that are between the

ages of 21-24 feel that it should be allowed. Although the females has a high number of

allowing the parents, the numbers are higher when the respondents responded no, parents

shouldn’t be allowed to use corporal punishment.

How about 51 of the females respondents in the age group under 21, feel that it’s

not okay to spank and 28of the respondents age 21-24. There’s 31 of the male

respondents under 21 also feels that it’s not ok.

Interpretation

The male and the female respondents both feel that it is okay to spank children as

a means of discipline. The female respondents 21 and under also have a higher number of

respondents that feel that it’s not okay to spank as a means if discipline. In the male

respondents’ results, the age group 21-24 has a higher respondent then the other age

groups.

Conclusion

This survey actually helps me learn about other people family lifestyles and what

they believe in. Although each survey is confidentiality and each respondent are

unknown, I’ve a better understand of how individuals are raised. I also learned that some

people weren’t punishing physically also stayed out of trouble with the police. My

opinion was that the people who wasn’t punish would more than likely have trouble with

the police. It was proved wrong and thought that it could just be the person and their

ways of behaving.
