SCHOOL
TRANSPORT
INFORMATION
School Year 2010 - 2011
Parents who use or intend to use school transport should take the time to read this
document thoroughly paying particular attention to the information on bus passes.
More than 900 of our students travel to school by either school or public transport
each day.
Every morning before 9 a.m. and every afternoon at 3.15 p.m, 12 buses, double-
deckers and coaches and 3 taxis solely devoted to school transport arrive on the
school drive. In addition a number of students use regular service buses outside the
school on the Erdington Road and in Aldridge.
Students should aim to arrive in the morning at their designated stop at least 10
minutes prior to the scheduled arrival of the bus.
If a school coach or bus does not turn up on time in the morning students should wait
for at least 30 minutes. Sometimes delays occur due to traffic or weather, but the
coach / bus will almost always turn up eventually.
If a student misses the bus it is the parents' responsibility to make alternative ar-
rangements.
All services will pick up and set down at any recognised bus stop on the route. Stu-
dents should put their hands out to signal the bus to stop.
All services are due to set down in school (unless otherwise stated) by 8.55a.m.
School finishes at 3.30p.m. And the buses depart at 3.40p.m (unless otherwise stat-
ed).
Students have 10 minutes at the end of the day to leave class, visit lockers or toilets
and then catch their bus home. If a student misses the bus he / she MUST tell a
member of staff; the student will be given the opportunity to telephone home. The
school will try to make other arrangements if no-one is in.
Transport can sometimes be delayed due to traffic, weather or a breakdown and stu-
dents may have to wait; again they will be given the opportunity to telephone home.
For safety reasons and to avoid congestion we ask parents NOT to drive or park on
the school premises between 3.20p.m and 3.45p.m in the afternoon to pick up their
children.
Although it is safe for young people to travel by school / public transport, there are a
number of common sense precautions parents /students can take that will increase
their safety even more.
Travelling by Bus
Know where you are going and where you need to get off.
Try and have your ticket, pass or change ready in your hand so your purse or wallet is
out of sight.
On a bus, it is safer to stay on the lower deck and sit near the driver or conductor.
If you feel uneasy, it makes sense to move to another seat or speak to the driver.
If you feel threatened on public transport make as much noise as possible to attract
attention.
Think about the best route home and where you could go if you felt threatened. The
best idea is to head for a place where you know there will be other people, for exam-
ple a garage or shop. Try to use well lit, busy streets and avoid quiet or badly lit al-
leyways, subways or isolated parks or waste grounds
Try to keep both hands free and don’t walk with your hands in your pockets.
If a car drives alongside you and someone inside, who you don’t know well, starts talk-
ing to you – turn and quickly walk away in the opposite direction.
Never accept a lift with a stranger or someone you don’t know very well even if you
are cold, tired or you’re late.
If you think you are being followed, trust your instincts and take action. As confi-
dently as you can, cross the road turning and looking to see who is behind you. If you
are still being followed, keep moving. Make for a busy area and tell people what is
happening.
Consider carrying a personal safety alarm, which can be used to shock and disorien-
tate an attacker giving you vital seconds to get away.
All students who travel to or from school on public or contract buses or coaches are
reminded that the high standards of behaviour which we expect in school should also
apply on your way to and from school. St Francis has a very good reputation which can
easily be spoiled by one or two thoughtless individuals. Unfortunately this is not al-
ways the case. In some circumstances offenders who have been identified have been
prohibited from travelling on the bus.
Students should not do anything which may distract the driver or upset other pas-
sengers, particularly those who share the bus with members of the public. In addition
when waiting for or getting off the buses students should behave in a responsible
manner, respect for other people’s property and good manners should be maintained.
Parents are asked to reinforce the importance of this message to your children.
Good behaviour also includes a responsible attitude towards the environment, particu-
larly the one which you travel in. There should be no need to consume large quantities
of food or drink on the relatively short journeys to and from school. Those who do
should put any wrappers, cans or bottles in an appropriate bin or, better still, take
them home and dispose of them responsibly.
We would like to emphasise the need for good behaviour on the buses.
The right to travel on school transport is always conditional upon good behaviour.
The school expects it. We want your children to travel in safety. Drivers can easily be
distracted.
Students who misbehave could lose the right to travel on school transport and can
have their passes withdrawn.

Mr Tafano the School Transport Manager is available via the school office on 01922
740300 or on mobile 07990 894802 (E mail www.mtafano@stfrancis.cc) from 8.30am
until 4.30pm Monday to Friday in school term to answer any transport queries.
You can apply for a subsidised or free bus pass for your child from Walsall Local Au-
thority (see page 12 for an application form). The application form must be sent to
Walsall L.E.A not to the school. If you require a Central Connect pass then please
make this clear on your application.
The forms and further information can also be obtained from Walsall L.E.A. (Tel.
01922 686363).You will have to provide proof of address. If this is not your nearest
faith school you might not qualify for a free pass.
The school will issue passes on the first day back at school subject to you having ap-
plied and Walsall L.E.A having approved the application.
You would not normally be eligible for subsidised transport but you can apply to your
local authority for guidance and assistance. Most local authorities have school bus
pass information and application forms on their respective web sites.
At present you will get free transport up to the age of 16 provided that your child is
Catholic. Check the timetables and put your child onto the appropriate coach on the
first day (Staffs L.A will have told you what service and pick up/drop off point).
Non Catholic students can apply to purchase vacant seat passes from Staffs L.A at a
cost of £410.
If you have not received your pass or need guidance or have any query you should con-
tact Staffs L.A. on 01785 278679.
NOTE: - As from September 2011 Staffordshire County Council will not provide
free transport to new students. Parents should contact the council for clarifica-
tion. Further updates will be available on this site when available.
Walsall students on Travel West Midlands buses and those who use several buses to
get to school can apply for free Travel West Midlands passes. Students from Brown-
hills can apply for Centro passes.
Students who qualify will be issued with their free pass on the first day in school, but
they will have to pay on the first morning. In the case of lost or stolen passes please
contact West Midlands Travel on 01922 856100 to see if it has been handed into
them. If a pass is lost it can be replaced for a fee of £15 per term (you can insure
against loss, details are on the pass) contact Centro on 0121 214 7207 for a replace-
ment. Each pass comes in 3 parts. Keep the top 2 parts for reference.
PLEASE NOTE-Walsall Children’s Services DO NOT supply replacements.
Students who have WM or Scholars or Centro bus passes will also need to have a
Photo identity card by the end of September. These can be purchased (and a plastic
wallet) from the Travel West Midlands shop located in the main bus station in Wal-
sall.
If your child does not qualify for a free or subsidised pass they can pay cash or you
could buy a pass from a sales outlet: e.g. a Bus master (N Bus) or a Scholar’s pass. Ask
for advice because no bus pass is valid for all buses.
Central Connect issue their own passes specifically for St Francis students. Students
from Walsall who are entitled to free passes and have applied for a Central Connect
pass will be issued with a temporary Central Connect pass on their first day in school.
Pupils must pay £1.35p on the bus on the first morning.
The temporary Central Connect pass will be valid for three weeks only. If a pass is
lost it can be replaced at a cost to the parent/guardian of £50.
If your child does NOT qualify for a subsidised pass (if you do not live in Walsall or
you live in Sandwell or Birmingham or if you live within 3 miles of another Catholic
school) then your child can pay cash on a daily basis £1.35p each way or you can pur-
chase a Central Connect travel pass. This pass cannot be used to travel on any other
bus.
The Central Connect travel pass costs £150 per term or £400 per year. If you wish
to purchase a pass send a photograph and a cheque (payable to Central Connect Lim-
ited) to Mr Tafano at school or directly to the company (Central Connect Limited,
Beacon House, Long Acre, Birmingham B7 5JJ).
Route descriptions, timetables and terms and conditions of travel are available on the
company’s website, located at www.connectbuses.com
NOTE: - Parents must re-apply for free school bus passes every July
If your application for free passes has not been successful then your child will have
to pay.
Where subsidised passes have NOT been granted or received or your child has
reached the age of 16 then parents should make alternative arrangements to
purchase passes or ensure that their child is provided with sufficient funds for
bus fare.
Students who need advice or assistance should contact Mr Tafano in the transport
office during the day.
On occasion some students chose to visit their friends in the Staffordshire area. In
the interests of Safety any request made by a student in years 7 to 11 for a tempo-
rary pass to travel on a Staffordshire school bus service, must be made to Mr Tafano
and MUST be supported by an appropriate entry in the applicants homework diary
signed by a parent or guardian before a pass will be issued subject to availability.
The entry should include the students name and date of travel requested.
This provision also applies to those students that are already registered by Staf-
fordshire County Council to travel on these services and want to travel on another
service for any reason.
In September of each year students will either return to our 6th form or go on to col-
lege. Please note the following:
Sandwell Students: At present you may be able to claim travel expenses. Collect an
application form from Mr Tafano or Contact Trudy Saddington on 0121 569 8331 and
ask for one or by E – Mail to. trudy_saddington@sandwell.gov.uk)
Staffordshire Students: Those of you who return to school will have to apply to pur-
chase a bus pass from the Integrated Transport Unit, DSD, Riverway, Stafford ST16
3TJ. Telephone No 01785 278679 or E-Mail student.transport@staffordshire.gov.uk.
The cost is £311 for Catholic students. Non Catholic students can apply for a vacant
seat pass at a cost of £410. If your family cannot afford the cost you could apply to
Staffordshire Council for assistance or speak to Mr Tafano, in certain circumstances
the school may be able to assist.
You will not be allowed to travel on the bus unless you purchase a pass.
Walsall, Birmingham Students: Once you reach the age of 16 you cannot buy a ‘child
rate’ pass or pay a ‘child rate’ fare unless you have a 16-18 ‘child rate’ photo card.
You can buy a bus child pass in August and use it until the middle of September, but
after that it will be invalid without a 16-18 photo card.
Applications for the 16-18 photo cards are available from Mr Tafano in school on your
second or third day back in school.
There is quite a choice of different bus passes; you should visit a travel shop (for ex-
ample in Walsall bus station) and make enquiries.
A child Centro card/scholars pass for example allows you to travel in the evenings and
on weekends on almost all buses (NOT THE 738,739,740,756).
A Term Plus card is good value but is only valid on West Midland buses. There are
one-week and one-term Bus master (N Bus) passes which are accepted on almost all
buses (NOT the 738,739,740).
If you wish to purchase a Central Connect pass then you should send a cheque, clearly
showing the applicants name (payable to Central Connect Limited) to Mr Tafano at
school or directly to the company (Central Connect Limited, Beacon House, Long Acre,
Birmingham B7 5JJ). Mr Tafano will issue you with a temporary pass to cover your
travel until a Central Connect pass is issued.

be cancelled.
In the interests of Health and Safety any request made by a student for a temporary
pass to travel on a Staffordshire school bus service other than the one they regularly
travel on, MUST be supported by an appropriate entry in the applicants homework
diary signed by a parent or guardian before a pass will be issued subject to availabil-
ity. The entry should include the students name and date of travel requested.
