As 21st century belongs to computers, gizmos and electronic items, energy issues

will get a serious ring in the coming days, as the public debate on carbon emissions, global
warming and climate change gets hotter. If we think computers are non-polluting and
consume very little energy we need to think again. It is estimated that out of $250 billion
per year spent on powering computers worldwide only about 15% of that power is spent
computing- the rest is wasted idling. Thus, energy saved on computer hardware and
computing will equate tonnes of carbon emissions saved per year. Taking into consideration
the popular use of information technology industry, it has to lead a revolution of sorts by
turning green in a manner no industry has ever done before. It is worth emphasizing that
this “green technology” should not be just about sound bytes to impress activists but
concrete action and organizational policy. Opportunities lie in green technology like never
before in history and organizations are seeing it as a way to create new profit centres while
trying to help the environmental cause. The plan towards green IT should include new
electronic products and services with optimum efficiency and all possible options towards
energy savings.
NextGen Research Findings:
Personal computers and servers are power hogs that exacerbate growing
electrical consumption trends, which results in increased pollution.
Purchases of green desktop and notebook computers and notebooks will grow from
less than a sixth (US$37 billion) of the $249-billion PC market in 2009, to nearly twothirds
(more than $190 billion) of the $323-billion PC market in 2013.
A properly planned migration to green PCs can lower Total Cost of Ownership (TCO)
by 20-50 percent.
The Situation in India
After consumer electronics and mobile phones, it's now the turn of computers to turn
green. Leading vendors such as Hewlett-Packard (HP), Dell and Acer are adopting ‘green
computing' in a major way in India. Apart from rolling out energy-efficient computers made
from recyclable materials, the vendors are launching recycling programs in India to reduce
e-waste.
The vendors feel their latest initiatives will boost sales amidst the slowdown, since green
computers consume much less energy and reduce the total cost of ownership. Analysts, too,
feel green computing could become the next growth driver at a time when market watchers
like IDC have projected that there could be a drop in PC sales in India this year.
Main Features:
All the basic features of a normal computer available in the market.
Use of solar energy by placing solar panels on the display that would switch to solar
power as and when there is enough light available for the PC to run.
70% more energy efficient.
90% of the material used would be recyclable.
Environment friendly due to use of non toxic materials while production.
Complying with various green product standards.
Light weight and low on operating cost.
New innovations such as liquid cooled CPUs and use of optical
technology.
Use motherboard video output - typically low 3D performance and low power
LCD monitors typically use a cold-cathode fluorescent bulb to provide light for the display. Some newer
displays use an array of light-emitting diodes (LEDs) in place of the fluorescent bulb

nce our weaknesses, particularly our knowledge of what our customers

need in terms of leading technology and services. We also have some attractive
opportunities in these same areas of expertise. However, we have an inherent weakness in
competing against price-oriented competition from the major brands.
Strengths
New and advanced Technology: The use of latest technology such as optics instead
of wires and liquid cooled CPU’s.
Environment friendly product: By and large this is the first product of its kind in
India that employs the renewable sources of energy to a large extent. It not only
focuses on generating minimum amount of waste during manufacturing but also on
the health aspect of the end-users.
Weaknesses
Costs: As we are using comparatively advanced technology in manufacturing of
our product, our initial costs of production are very high as compared to existing
market players.
Price and volume: Due to our high costs of production our pricing is bound to be
high initially. In the long run with the production of more units we plan to bring
down the prices to a moderate level. At present, we are not concentrating on the
volume aspect but on establishing key relationships with the dominant buyers.
Brand power: We do not possess the brand name that many pre existing brands can
leverage on. Creating a place in such a highly competitive market would be a
challenge.

Opportunities
Growing consumer awareness: With the consumer becoming more and more alert
about the product that they use and its impact on the environment we stand a good
chance at convincing them to try our product.
Growing use of computers: With the growing demand of computers in each passing
decade, supply is hardly enough to meet the current expectations. Each sector be it
banking, educational institutes or healthcare industry require maintaining a database
covering specific information. Seeing such a magnificent demand for computers and
laptops would enable us to tap these potential markets.
Support from the Government: the Indian Government is planning out measures to
support the players in the various industries that roll out environment friendly
products. We can avail support from the government as it is very eager to support
the firms who are willing to take such initiatives.
Threats
High Prices: It is probable that due to our high pricing we might face trouble being a
new player in the computer market.
Rivals copying our product: With the success of our product in the market it is highly
possible that the leading rivals will start dishing out the same technology which can
reduce our competitive advantage hence differentiation has to be carried out on a
prominent basis by us.

Definition:Like all electronic devices, computers have an impact on the environment. They use
materials that require energy to manufacture, and many of the materials included are hazardous.
They require electricity to run and are difficult to recycle. However, it's not difficult to make
your computer greener, or to manufacture a more green computer. Here are some of the
principles to look for to make your computing more green.

Lenovo release 2 new green professional laptops ThinkPad L Series which named Lenovo
ThinkPad L412 and Lenovo ThinkPad L512. It’s a high performance with military durability
laptop.
This Lenovo ThinkPad L Series powered by Intel Celeron, Core i3 or Core i5 processor, up to
8GB of RAM, and up to 500GB of HDD. It’s feature with 7-in-1 card reader, 4x USB 2.0 ports,
wifi 802.11 b/g/n, integrated Intel or ATI Mobility Radeon 5145 graphic card and bluetooth.
The screen of Lenovo ThinkPAd L412 and L512 notebooks has 14-inch and 15-inch with
antiglare HD display with 1366×768 pixel resolution and LED backlight. This ThinkPad L
Series also design for green materials up to 30% used in the top/bottom case, LCD cover, palm
rest, and area for hands with recycling including plastic water bottles. It’s already pre-loaded
with Windows 7 OS with price start from $649.

Nowadays, solar energy are used in several things like car, electronic items, computers and
laptops, heating and lightings and various other purposes. Solar energy is a clean form of energy
which are available in abundant. Today, there are several laptops and computer are available in
the market, which are powered by solar cells. These can save a lot of money and energy that is
used by ordinary computers and laptops.
The green laptops are uses mercury free LEDs in order to illuminate display. This saves a lot of
energy, and enables for a thinner screen. Green laptops are made up of solid-state drive, which
are faster, reliable and much lighter than the ordinary drive. Green laptop come with a low
voltage processor and has enhanced ‘battery stretch’ software for energy savings.

Some of the laptops are aluminum case, which are easily recyclable and highly wanted by
recyclers. All the materials that are used for packing are ninety percent are recyclable.

Switching from a desktop to a green laptop is a very good method to enhance your productivity
and also in reducing the amount of greenhouse gases that you add to each year. Let us be a part
in reducing greenhouse gases that we produce and save our Mother Earth. Going green does not
mean that you have to give up on several aspects of your life; it means we have to stop and think
a while on how to make a difference in our world. Make some or the other activity, which helps
in conserving energy and nature.  Let us save our planet by going green.
