Parabolized stability equation (PSE) models are being developed to predict the e
volution of low-frequency, large-scale wavepacket structures and their radiated
sound in high-speed turbulent round jets. Linear PSE (LPSE) models show good agr
eement with the wavepacket pressure amplitude envelope and phase measured using
a microphone array placed just outside the jet shear layer, especially when unco
rrelated small scale fluctuations are filtered out of the microphone measurement
s.
When projected to the far-field using a Kirchhoff Surface type method, the LPSE
solutions show reasonable agreement with the far-field measurements. However, i
t remains unclear whether the implied fluctuation levels are realistic of the ne
ar-field, near-nozzle disturbances, or whether nonlinear effects are important i
n the evolution of the wave packets.
Nonlinearity is investigated by extending the PSE model to include nonlinear for
ce terms and turbulent models to account for finer-scale turbulence not included
in the PSE Ansatz. Both experimental and LES data are used for the PSE base flo
w and also to initialize the amplitudes and phases of the nonlinear disturbance
modes. The nonlinear results seem to be quite sensitive to these initial modal
amplitudes and their phases and their accurate estimation remains a significant
challenge.
Biography
Arnab Samanta was born and brought up in Kolkata, where he graduated with a degr
ee in Mechanical Engineering from Jadavpur University. He obtained a Masters in
Aerospace Engineering from the Indian Institute of Science with a thesis on turb
ulence modeling. His Doctoral work was in Applied Mechanics at the University of
Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with a thesis on theoretical modeling of aeroacous
tic wave scattering. Next he spent some time at Caltech as a Postdoc to learn ab
out the wavepacket models in aeroacoustics. Recently, he has returned to India t
o take up the position of Assistant Professor at the Indian Institute of Science
. His research interests lie in the broad area of theoretical and numerical flui
d dynamics with particular emphasis on aeroacoustics, stability analysis, compre
ssible flows and reacting flows.
