ket. For the past few years, one of the
company’s marquee projects has been
a medical complex for Los Angeles
County (LAC) and the University of
Southern California (USC). When it
opens later this year, the LAC + USC
Medical Center will be a 600-bed, 1.5-
million-square-foot facility. Its four
major components will be a seven-
story outpatient building, an eight-
story inpatient tower, a five-story diag-
nostic and treatment building, and a
central energy plant. The company
notes all four buildings have been
designed to withstand maximum cred-
ible seismic events.
This $820 million project is not only
the largest capital construction project
ever undertaken by the county of Los
Angeles, but it also is the largest project
in terms of square footage and cost cur-

rently underway in the county. It is
replacing an older facility, and although
it will encompass less total space than
the older building, its efficiency of
design and built-in technological
advances will make up for lost space.
For example, USC says, the new facil-
ity will use broadband Internet connec-
tions to deliver digital X-rays and other
medical records instantaneously to
operating or conference rooms. USC
says this will eliminate the need for peo-
ple to physically carry records from
place to place and reduce the need for
record storage space.
“In the new facility, electronics will be
doing the work that used to tie up
interns,” said David Altman, chief med-
ical officer of the LAC+USC Healthcare
Network, in a statement. “It will be a
great place to work – it will have all the
bells and whistles that the medical fac-
ulty wants and needs.”
The new facility will have 200 inten-
sive-care beds – compared to 80 in the
old building. USC says the building’s
design incorporates faster and more
efficient elevators, including one that
will be a direct link between a helipad
and emergency room to ensure fast
transfer of critical patients.
