We can generalize the result in Exercise 1 by considering the sum of the terms of an arbitrary geometric
progression. Show by induction that for n ≥ 0
(n + 1)(2a + nd)
a + (a + d) + (a + 2d) + · · · + (a + nd) =
2
Solution.
(n+1)(2a+nd)
Let P (n) be the proposition that a + (a + d) + (a + 2d) + · · · + (a + nd) = 2 for n ≥ 0
BASIS STEP:
P (0) is true because a = a
INDUCTIVE STEP:
Assume that P (k) is true for n ≥ 0. That is, we assume that
(k + 1)(2a + kd)
a + (a + d) + (a + 2d) + · · · + (a + kd) =
2
To carry out the inductive step using this assumption, we must show that when we assume that P (k) is true,
then P (k + 1) is also true. That is, we must show that
(k + 1)(2a + kd)
a + (a + d) + (a + 2d) + · · · + (a + kd) + (a + (k + 1)d) = + (a + (k + 1)d)
2
(k + 1)(2a + kd) 2(a + kd + d)
= +
2 2
(k + 1)(2a + kd) + 2a + 2(k + 1)d
=

2ak + 4a + dk 2 + 3dk + 2d

2a(k + 2) + d(k 2 + 3k + 2)
=

2a(k + 2) + d(k + 2)(k − 1)
=
2
(k + 2)(2a + d(k + 1))
=
2
(k + 2)(2a + kd + d)
=
2
Note that we used the inductive hypothesis in the second equation in this string of equalities to replace a + (a +
(k+1)(2a+kd)
d) + (a + 2d) + · · · + (a + kd) by 2 . We have completed the inductive step.
Because we have completed the basis step and the inductive step, by mathematical induction we know that
(n+1)(2a+nd)
P (n) is true for n ≥ 0. That is, for n ≥ 0, a + (a + d) + (a + 2d) + · · · + (a + nd) = 2 ■

Establish the following inequalities by induction.
Solusi.
2k > k 2
Perhatikan 2k+1
2k+1 = 2k · 2
> k2 · 2 (2k > k 2 )
= k2 + k2
= k 2 + k(k)
≥ k 2 + 5k (k ≥ 5)
= k 2 + 2k + 3k
> k 2 + 2k + 1 (k ≥ 5 > 1)
= (k + 1)2
3 Page 15 Exercise 7
Show by induction that any postage greater than or equal to two cents can be made up exactly using only two
and three cent stamps.
Solusi.
2
(a) Kasus 1 untuk a = 0
k = 2a + 3b
k = 3b
k + 1 = 3b + 1
= 3(b − 1) + 3 · 1 + 1
= 3(b − 1) + 4
= 3(b − 1) + 2 · 2
= 2 · 2 + 3(b − 1)
Sehingga
(b − 1) termasuk bilangan cacah. Kasus 1 terbukti.
k = 2a + 3b
k + 1 = 2a + 3b + 1
k + 1 = 2(a − 1) + 2 · 1 + 3b + 1
= 2(a − 1) + 3b + 3
= 2(a − 1) + 3(b + 1)
Perhatikan (a − 1) termasuk bilangan cacah karena a ≥ 1 dan (b + 1) juga termasuk bilangan cacah.
Sehinnga kasus 2 terbukti.
4 Page 16 Exercise 9
Show by induction that there are infitely many prime numbers.
HINT: Show that for any n ≥ 1, there are at least n primes. In the induction step, you want to construct a
new prime from k previously constructed primes p1 , ..., pk . Consider any prime factor of p1 p2 · · · pk + 1.
Solusi.
Langkah basis :
{p1 , p2 , p3 , ..., pk } pi > 1, ∀i
bilangan prima. ■
