Course objectives and content:

Human Resource Management (HRM) involves all management decisions and


actions that affect the nature of the relationship between the organization and its
employees. Effective Human Resource Management creates a win-win
relationship with employees by seeking the best fit between organizational and
individual goals. With effective Human Resource Management the organization
acquires a competent and committed workforce, able to support the corporate
strategy. Therefore organizations can create a competitive advantage through
their people.

There is a dual focus in this course. The first focus is on the various human
resource policies as recruitment, selection, performance management, rewards,
staffing and development. Students will get insight into the basic challenges,
strategic approaches and tools within these fields. The second focus covers the
career development and career management aspects of HRM, both at individual
and organizational levels.

Introduction to Human Resource Management is an interactive learning


experience designed to give students the basic level understanding about how
organizations manage its human resource.

Student learning outcomes:

The participants should be able to:

Understand how managers can be effective and efficient in their role in HRM.
Understand the basic principles and added value of HR policies and functions
Understand how HRM is related to the organizational context
Understanding how to manage and develop careers

Pedagogical techniques:
The pedagogical style will be a combination of conceptual lectures and cases. In
the lectures the focus is on the theories, concepts or models relating to key HR-
fields. Selective cases will focus on an in-depth analysis of HR-issues within the
organizational context. Assignments during the cases will increase the insight of
students. The group discussions before the class will stimulate students to carry
out a literature search for a relevant HRM case, to analyze the case and to write
their reflections on it.
