Romeo and Juliet starts with the ___1_ __ singing the ___2 ___ , which is really
Shakespeare’s preview of the play.
To start scene i, our friends, Sampson and ___3 ___ (both servants of the house of the __4__ )
make multiple inappropriate jokes about the___5___ and their women (which made me blush) and
begin to taunt the ___6___ servants they encounter them on the street. This leads to a ___7 ___ in
the middle of the streets of ___8___ . Lord Montague and Lord Capulet also get ready to join the
fray, with ___9___ crying out “Get me my long ___10 ___ , ho!” Luckily, our friend ___11 ___
shows up and tries to make peace (by pulling out his sword to stop the fighting). However, this does
not seem to work – when the fiery ___12___ shows up, he is ready for action against him. In fact, our
“saucy” friend tells Romeo’s cousin that he hates the word peace as he hates “hell, all Montagues,
and___13___ .” Luckily, ___14___ shows up and ends the fight by informing all involved that the
punishment for disturbing the peace a fourth time is___15___ At the end of the scene, we see
Benvolio talking to the sullen ___16___ (because mom and pop Montague asked him to). We find
out that our hero is all upset because the hot ___17___ doesn’t like him back. How sad. Benvolio
offers up the advice that there are other fish in the sea – our hero disagrees. Who will be proven
correct?

In another area of Verona, we find Lord ___18___ and___19___ (a kinsman [relative] of the Prince)
talking about a marriage. However, ___20___ does not think that at almost___21___ years old, his
daughter, ___22___ , is old enough to marry. The two men exchange a few words about the matter,
with the older man stating that he wants them to wait two years; in that time, the younger is supposed
to win Juliet’s ___23___ , and then her father will grant his permission for the wedding. We learn
through their speech that Capulet is so over-protective because all of his other children ___24___ .
We also learn that our younger buddy thinks that Juliet (who is younger than you are) is old enough to
marry because “younger than she are ___25___ mothers made” – which is certainly not true by
today’s standards, and was on the edge of acceptability even then!
The scene ends with Capulet telling his servant to take the list and invite the ___26___ to the party
that he is throwing (the most fun social event of the year – think Verona’s answer to English class).
Sadly, the servant is ___27___ and asks the first people he sees, (loverboy) ___28 ___ and
(peacemaker) ___29___ , for help. Poor choice, huh? They help, and the servant invites them to
“crush a cup” (of milk) with him if they are not of the house of ___30___ . They are, but decide to go
anyway (Benvolio because he wants Romeo to get out of his miserable mood and hit on some of
Verona’s finest, and Romeo so that he can see his lady of choice, ___31___ .)

Scene iii involves___32___ , Juliet, and her mother, ___33___ . Juliet’s mom asks the Nurse to leave
so that she and her daughter might speak in private, forgetting that she is more of a ___34___ to
Juliet than Lady Capulet. Once the makeup of the room is settled, they get to talking about the
(hopeful) wedding between Juliet and Paris. Lady Capulet and the Nurse encourage Juliet to marry
Paris because he is rich and ___35___ .
___36___ makes several inappropriate jokes about ___37___ (and some very inappropriate
comments from her husband) which serve to slightly embarrass ___38___ and let us know that she is
on a slightly lower social standing (she is a wet nurse, after all). She also mentions that her daughter
___39___ , was the same age as Juliet, but unfortunately passed away young. At first Juliet vacillates
(goes back and forth) on her decision, but eventually ___40___ (gives in) to the wisdom of the older
(and obviously excited) women and agrees to see Paris at the party and see if she could love him
(obviously based on his wit and intelligence). All the women are excited that Juliet is getting married,
___41___ ends their time together by telling her to “seek happy nights to happy ___42___ ,” an
obvious reference to wedded bliss.

punster continues, and Romeo quickly tires of his friend’s ceaseless banter, but starts listening when
Mercutio gives his ___49___ speech. She is the fairy queen from a Celtic myth, but also a
Shakespearean reference to prostitutes – thus Mercutio again ___50___ Romeo and his ideals.

servant to fetch his ___56___ . Lord Capulet overhears this and scolds the young man. He tells him
that ___57___ is well-regarded in Verona and that no harm shall come to him at Capulet’s party (this
could be his kinder, gentler side showing, or a quick ploy to save his own neck). Romeo and Juliet
speak ___58___ lines to each other (in the rhyme scheme of a ___59___ – interesting, huh?) before
they___60___ (twice). Their lines to each other are in ___61___ terms that creates a

Juliet’s mother is Lady Capulet (___62___ tells him). Romeo is distraught. Juliet comments that if
he is married, she will ___63___ . To find out, she asks the Nurse who he is; when she discovers that
