JOB DESCRIPTION

Editor-in-Chief
NinerOnline.com

The Editor-in-Chief shall work with the Executive Media Editor and Editor-in-Chief of The Niner Times to oversee the
operation of NinerOnline.com, including the content, design, and site promotion, as well as work closely with the Marketing
department in the placement of online advertising.

Distinguishing Features of the Job:

The Editor-in-Chief will provide overall direction for the NinerOnline.com team, including, but not limited to video produc-
tion, social media utilization, blogs, and new features for NinerOnline.com. S/He will ensure that site content is updated on
a daily basis by working closely with The Niner Times and his/her staff. S/He will also ensure that all banner ads are placed
timely and rotate as scheduled. The Editor-in-Chief should be an excited, out-going, visionary who has a good balance of
content management, video experience, and journalistic knowledge.

Responsibilities and Duties:


• Directs the work of the NinerOnline officers;
• Meets weekly with the NinerOnline.com staff in order to make announcements and work out any problems that
may arise;
• Maintains 15 posted office hours weekly between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.;
• Prepares for department prior to school starting;
• Conducts training sessions and workshops, held at the beginning of each semester, unless otherwise scheduled by the
Executive Media Editor;
• Meets weekly with the Executive Media Editor and Editor-in-Chief of The Niner Times;
• Determines any departmental policy changes, in cojunction with Executive Media Editor;
• Develops the budget for NinerOnline.com;
• Serves as liaison to other Student Media departments;
• Makes sure NinerOnline.com staff payroll is finalized by lst of the month;
• Maintains high professional standards and high profile;
• Works with the Graduate Assistant for Online Production to develop NinerOnline.com;
• Works at festivals, award ceremonies, parties, etc. to stimulate interest in NinerOnline.com in particular and Student
Media in general.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Experience and Abilities:


• Knowledge of website design, content management, and video productions;
• Thorough understanding of convergent media;
• Ability to work well with and direct activities of others;
• Ability to prepare and present comprehensive reports on the workings of NinerOnline.com.
• Currently enrolled student at UNC Charlotte;
• Possess a minimum GPA of 2.5 at time of appointment;
• Be in good disciplinary and academic standing with UNC Charlotte;
• Was an employee of NinerOnline.com the semester prior to, as well as the semester of selection;
• Knowledge of policies and procedures of NinerOnline.com and Student Media Board Constitutions;
• Secure majority approval of the Student Media Board to serve in accordance with procedures developed for
operation of the NinerOnline.com.

The NinerOnline Editor-in-Chief reports to the Student Media Board, as well as the Executive Media Editor. Questions about
this position and its responsibilities should be directed to your supervisor. Grievances may be taken to the Student Media
Board and/or Director of Student Media.

Pay: The NinerOnline Editor-in-Chief receives a $250 stipend per month.

COMMUNITY MANAGER
NinerOnline.com

The Community Manager will oversee and develop NinerOnline.com and The Niner Times’ social media utilization and
online exclusive content. S/He will work under the supervision of the NinerOnline Editor-in-Chief.

Distinguishing Features of the Job:


The Community Manager will ensure that social media is being utilized to its fullest potential, including Twitter, Facebook,
YouTube, NinerNation.net, live blogging, and Tumblr. S/He will also oversee the production of blog and podcast content for
NinerOnline.com. The Community Manager should be outgoing with a good understanding of journalism and the workings
of Student Media.

Responsibilities and Duties:

• Works closely with The Niner Times staff and Executive Media Editor to coordinate strategic event coverage and
promotions;
• Meets weekly with the NinerOnline Editor-in-Chief;
• Maintains 12 posted office hours weekly between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.;
• Coordinates blogs with The Niner Times’ Opinion Editor;
• Manages bloggers;
• Ensures that blogs are released in a timely manner;
• Creates and maintains podcast in coordination with other interested media departments;
• Maintains high professional standards;
• Works at festivals, award ceremonies, parties, etc. to stimulate interest in NinerOnline.com in particular and Student
Media in general.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Experience and Abilities:


• Thorough knowledge of social media and social media strategy
•  High-level of creativity;
• Ability to work well with and direct activities of others;
• Currently enrolled student at UNC Charlotte;
• Possess and maintain a minimum GPA of 2.25;
• Be in good academic standing with the University;
• Knowledge of policies and procedures of NinerOnline.com and Student Media Board Constitutions;

NinerOnline.com

The videographer will be responsible for producing weekly segments for NinerOnline.com. Video will be used for various
shows each week, as well as videos to accompany articles from The University Times.

Distinguishing Features of the Job:


The videographer will report to the NinerOnline Editor-in-Chief. Each week, the videographer should contact their assigned
section team to see what video they may need to work on. The videographer will keep 5 office hours.

Responsibilities and Duties:


• Capture video for various projects
• Import and edit captured video
• Assist show teams with editing task
• Contact show producers weekly
• Maintains high professional standards and high profile;
• Works at festivals, award ceremonies, parties; stimulates interest in NinerOnline.com in particular and Student Media in
general.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Experience and Abilities:


• Thorough knowledge of capturing video
• Working knowledge of Final Cut Pro
•  High-level of creativity;
• Ability to work well with and direct activities of others;
• Must be a student currently enrolled at UNC Charlotte;
• Must possess and maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0;

VIDEO PRODUCTIONS MANAGER

The Video Productions Manager will oversee the production of video content for NinerOnline.com. S/He will direct show
production teams, as well as videographers. S/He will work under the supervision of the NinerOnline Editor-in-Chief.

Distinguishing Features of the Job:


The Video Productions Manager will ensure that shows are released on time, and segments produced benefit both NinerOn-
line and The Niner Times. S/He will provide creative approaches to presenting new material on NinerOnline.com, utilizing
multimedia. The Video Productions Manager should possess a solid balance of journalistic knowledge and technical skills.
S/He should be able to work effectively on a team and be detail-oriented.

Responsibilities and Duties:


• Directs the work of videographers and producers;
• Works with the NinerOnline and The Niner Times staff to ensure comprehensive video coverage;
• Meets weekly with the NinerOnline Editor-in-Chief;
• Maintains 12 posted office hours weekly between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.;
• Produces one show for NinerTV at the discretion of the Editor-in-Chief;
• Maintains high professional standards and high profile;
• Works at festivals, award ceremonies, parties, etc. to stimulate interest in NinerOnline.com in particular and Student
Media in general.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Experience and Abilities:


• Good understanding of video editing software and camera use;
• Strong design background, including using Adobe Photoshop;
•  High-level of creativity;
• Ability to work well with and direct activities of others;
• Ability to prepare and present comprehensive reports on the workings of NinerOnline.com.
• Currently enrolled student at UNC Charlotte;
• Possess and maintain a minimum GPA of 2.25;
• Be in good academic standing with the University;

The Technical Assistant will be responsible for maintaining NinerOnline.com and working with technical components of the
site.

Distinguishing Features of the Job:


The Technical Assistant will report to the NinerOnline Editor-in-Chief. S/He will be responsible for implementing new fea-
tures on NinerOnline.com, as well as ensuring that the site is consistently updated. The Technical Assistant will keep 8 office
hours.

Responsibilities and Duties:


• Plans and implements new features for NinerOnline.com
• Maintains the “blocks,” “views,” and “nodequeues” of NinerOnline.com
• Assists the various teams, when needed
• Meets with NinerOnline Editor-in-Chief Weekly
• Maintains high professional standards and high profile;
• Works at festivals, award ceremonies, parties, etc. to stimulate interest in NinerOnline.com in particular and Student
Media in general.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Experience and Abilities:


• Thorough knowledge of web development. (HTML, CSS, Javascript, PHP)
• Working knowledge of Drupal
• Willingness to thoroughly learn Drupal, specifially, the OpenPublish build
•  High-level of creativity;
• Ability to work well with and direct activities of others;
• Currently enrolled student at UNC Charlotte;
• Possess and maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0;
• Be in good academic standing with the University;
• Knowledge of policies and procedures of NinerOnline.com and Student Media Board Constitutions;
