Kegiatan Pembelajaran Unit 2 : Opinion and Thoughts

A. Kompetensi Dasar :

3.2 Menerapkan fungsi sosial, struktur teks, dan unsur kebahasaan teks interaksi transaksional lisan dan
tulis yang melibatkan tindakan memberi dan meminta informasi terkait pendapat dan pikiran, sesuai
dengan konteks penggunaannya. (Perhatikan unsur kebahasaan I think, I suppose, in my opinion)

memberi dan meminta informasi terkait pendapat dan pikiran, dengan memperhatikan fungsi sosial,

 Menyatakan pendapat dan pikirannya yang sesuai secara tertulis kemudian dibacakan ke kelas

Materi Asking and Giving Opinion


The following are the example of mental verbs which refer to opinion.

Asking and Giving Opinion ialah suatu ungkapan yang digunakan untuk menanyakan,
menjawab atau merespon suatu pendapat.

Grammar :

Dalam Opinion, biasanya terdapat beberapa kata kerja yang digunakan antara lain believe (percaya),
reckon (memperhitungkan), think (rasa/pikir), doubt (meragukan), assume (berasumsi), agree (setuju),
atau don’t agree (tidak setuju).

A. Mental Verbs refer to cognitive (that deals with logic) state in which actions are mostly
abstract. Mental verbs provide meanings which are connected to our sensory capabilities,
deciding, understanding and planning. Opinions can be expressed using mental verbs.
Mental Verbs adalah kata kerja yang merujuk pada kemampuan berfikir yang aksinya secara
umum abstrak. Mental verbs memiliki makna yang berhubungan dengan kemampuan perasa,
kemampuan menentukan sesuatu, pemahaman, dan perencanaan. Contoh sederhananya seperti
ini; "makan" adalah verb yang secara jelas terlihat aksinya

Contoh sederhananya seperti ini; "makan" adalah verb yang secara jelas terlihat aksinya. Begitu pula
"berenang", "tidur", "belajar", dan lain - lain. Kata kerja ini aksinya terlihat, lantas tidak dikategorikan
sebagai mental verbs.

Sementara "berfikir", "percaya", "ragu", "memutuskan", dan "merasa" adalah beberapa contoh verb
yang aksinya tidak terlihat atau abstrak. Yang sepertinya inilah yang dimaksudkan dalam Mental Verbs

Berikut adalah contoh kata mental verbs

The following are the example of mental verbs which refer to opinion.

1. I believe our country will be a great nation.

2. I Think we have responsibilities to prevent bullying in our society.

3. I doubt the Road construction in our village will finish this week.

4. I assume tourism in our country will increase next year.

5. I feel rice prices will remain stable during this year.

B. A collocation is a combination two or more words that often go together. These combinations
just sound "right" to native English speakers, who use them all the time. On the other hand, other
combinations may be unnatural and just sound "wrong".

Dalam Bahasa Inggris, collocation merupakan gabungan antara dua kata atau lebih yang
membentuk suatu istilah.
Sebenarnya, tidak ada aturan khusus tentang collocation, hanya ada yang terdengar natural bagi
pembicara native Bahasa Inggris, ada yang tidak. Maka dari itu, kita hanya bisa menghafalnya
yaa.

Collocation digunakan agar percakapan atau sebuah tulisan tidak terdengar kaku dan justru
natural.

Jadi, kira – kira ada apa saja ya macam – macam collocation? Yuk, disimak pembahasannya!

Mengenal Macam – Macam Collocation

Ada beberapa macam kombinasi dari verb, noun, adjective yang bisa membentuk collocation.
Berikut diantaranya:

1. Adverb (Kata Keterangan) + adjective (Kata Sifat)

Kombinasi pertama ialah adverb ditambah adjective. Contoh collocation dengan kombinasi ini
adalah:

 Completely satisfied (benar – benar puas)


 Fully aware (benar – benar paham)
 Utterly stupid (benar – benar bodoh)

Contoh dalam kalimat sebagai berikut:

 I am completely satisfied with this restaurant’s service.

(Saya benar – benar puas dengan pelayanan restoran ini.)

 Are you fully aware of our current situation?

(Apa kau benar – benar paham akan situasi kita sekarang?)

 If you could just drop my order at the front office, it would be greatly appreciated.

(Kalau kamu bisa letakkan pesananku di front office, aku akan sangat menghargainya.)

2. Adjective (Kata sifat) + noun (kata benda)

Kombinasi berikutnya ialah adjective dan noun. Contoh collocation dengan kombinasi ini
adalah:

 Excruciating pain (sakit yang sangat pedih)


 Preliminary exam (tes awal)
 Regular schedule (jadwal biasa)
Contoh dalam kalimat antara lain:

 Can you please call a doctor? I’m in excruciating pain.

(Bisakah kamu panggil dokter? Aku sangat kesakitan.)

 In order to get in, you have to pass the preliminary exam first.

(Agar bisa masuk, kamu harus lulus tes awal dulu.)

 Our regular schedule will be adjusted due to coronavirus.

(Jadwal biasa kita akan disesuaikan karena virus corona.)

3. Noun (kata benda) + noun (kata benda)

Noun digabung noun lagi juga bisa membentuk collocation. Antara lain seperti ini:

 A round of applause. (tepuk tangan riuh)


 A cup of coffee. (secangkir kopi)
 A box of chocolate. (sekotak cokelat)

Contoh dalam kalimat seperti ini:

 Give around of applause for our valedictorian, Linda!

(Beri tepik tangan meriah untuk lulusan terbaik kita, Linda!)

 I’ll buy you a cup of coffee if you help me.

(Aku akan membelikanmu secangkir kopi kalau kau membantuku.)

 A box of chocolate for valentine is so cliche.

(Sekotak cokelat disaat valentine klise sekali.)

4. Noun (kata benda) + verb (kata kerja)

Kombinasi lain yaitu noun dengan verb. Antara lain seperti ini:

 House was burning (Api terbakar)


 Bus departed (Bus berangkat)
 Movie started (Film dimulai)

Contoh dalam kalimat seperti ini:


 I heard the house on the corner was burning last year.

(Aku dengan rumah di pojok terbakar tahun kemarin.)

 The bus departed ahead of schedule so I’ll probably arrive sooner.

(Busnya berangkat lebih awal dari jadwal jadi mungkin aku akan sampai lebih cepat.)

 Quick! We have to arrive before the movie started!

(Cepat! Kita harus sampai sebelum filmya dimulai!)

5. Verb (kata kerja) + noun (kata benda)

Contohnya seperti ini:

 Commit suicide (melakukan bunuh diri)


 Give opinion (memberikan pendapat)
 Do assignment (mengerjakan tugas)

Contoh dalam kalimat seperti ini:

 Linda is worried that her mentally ill brother might commit suicide

(Linda khawatir kalau saudaranya yang sakit jiwa mungking melakukan bunuh diri.)

 Would you like to give your opinion regarding this issue?

(Apa Anda ingin memberikan pendapat tentang isu ini?)

 Don’t forget to do your assignment when you arrive at home.

(Jangan lupa lakukan tugasmu saat sampai dirumah!)

6. Verb (kata kerja) + expression with preposition (pernyataan dengan preposisi)

Contohnya begini nih:

 Burst into tears (Menangis terisak – isak)


 Driven to madness (Dibuat gila)
 Filled with joy (Penuh kebahagiaan)

Sedangkan contoh dalam kalimat seperti ini:

 My mother was so happy when I graduated, she burst into tears.


(Ibuku senang sekali saat aku lulus sampai -sampai dia menangis terisak – isak.)

 I feel like I’m driven to madness by this assignment!

(Rasanya aku dibuat gila oleh tugas ini!)

 My heart is filled with joy today!

(Hatiku dipenuhi kebahagiaan hari ini!)

7. Verb (kata kerja) + adverb (kata keterangan)

Contohnya seperti ini:

 Screaming loudly (Berteriak keras – keras)


 Whispered softly (berbisik lembut)
 Strictly prohibited (secara tegas dilarang)

Contoh dalam kalimat seperti ini:

 She was screaming loudly during the concert.

(Dia berteriak sangat keras saat konser.)

 We have to whisper softly at the library.

(Kita harus berbisik lembut di perpustakaan)/

 It is strictly prohibited to smoke here.

(Merokok disini benar – benar dilarang.)

The Example of Asking or Giving Opinion

Berikut ini saya berikan beberapa contoh kalimat tentang bagaimana seseorang bertanya atau a
memberikan pendapatnya :

Agreeing with an Opinion


 Of course.
 This is absolutely right.
 I agree with this opinion.
 I couldn't agree more.
 I agree with what you are saying.
 I agree, I never thought of that.
 Neither do I.
 That's a good point.
 I think so too.

Disagreeing with an opinion

 I am sorry, I don't agree with you.


 I am not sure I agree with you.
 I don't agree with you.
 I am afraid I have to disagree with you.
 I do not believe that.
 By this I mean.....

 That's not the same thing at all.
 It is not justified to say so.

(Ani : dimana kamu membelinya?)

(Ani :  apa yang kamu fikirkan tentang pendapatannya?)

Practice the following dialog with friends.

Yuda : the traffic is heavy every morning. Look! Drivers and motorcyclists drive their vehicles
very fast. We should be careful.
Bayu : you are absolutely right. I guess they are in hurry to their offices or schools.

Yuda : I know, but they shouldn’t do that because it may endanger other road users and
themselves. They should leave for their offices or schools earlier. Do you think so?

Bayu : yes, I do. I feel poor when I see motorcyclists not wear safety helmets and ignore traffic
lights. They don’t realize how dangerous it is.

Yuda : yeah ! I’d say that police officers should have more safe ride campaigns, especially for
students because I see many students break riding rules.

Bayu : that’s true. By the way, we never have a safe ride campaign. What do you think if we
arrange one at our school?

Yuda : I agree, I think we should have one, so we understand the importance of safe ride and
riding rules . what’s your opinion if we invite a police officer to campaign safe ride at our
school?

Bayu : I agree with you. Let’s discuss this matter further in the osis meeting tomorrow.

Yuda : that sounds great.
