Mentor Information Sheet

If you are reading this sheet, you have likely been asked to mentor the Senior Project of an R.A.
Long student. This handout won’t answer all of your questions, but hopefully, it will provide
some background.

What is the Senior Project, and why is it done?

The staff at R.A. Long is well aware of the concerns of the community members who believe
students are leaving high school unprepared for college, vocational training, and employment.
For that reason, we ask our students to demonstrate---via the project---that they can effectively
read, plan, think, write, speak, meet deadlines, and work with others. Students begin by selecting
a topic of their choice for research and hands-on learning. Because we want students to
demonstrate both accountability and independence, we do our best to assure that they are
allowed to choose a subject that is of interest to them. They must write a proposal, which details
the project, and select a mentor who can serve as an expert in the area they have chosen.

Students must successfully complete three phases. First, they must research their topic and
produce a paper of at least eight pages in length. After working with their English teachers to
prepare the paper, it is submitted for formal evaluation. Students must earn a score of 75 or
higher in order to pass the paper. Second, they must spend a minimum of 15 hours, at least one
of which must be community service, on the physical project. What they will actually do will
have been determined by student and mentor. The project must be judged satisfactory by the
mentor in order to be acceptable. Third, students must make an oral presentation to a board of
five adults, at which time they will demonstrate their knowledge of the subject and show what
they have produced.

Project Time Sheet

(To be maintained by the student and returned to his/her English teacher with the Project
Evaluation Form before 3:00 p.m. bell tower by May 27, 2011).

Please keep a record of the dates and hours you work on the physical portion of the project, as
well as the meetings you have with your mentor. In addition, please chart the tasks you work
on or accomplish. Show your mentor your time sheet when you meet and explain what you have
been doing. This will be helpful later when you ask your mentor to verify your hours and
evaluate the project.

PROJECT GOAL FORM (Due October 1)

***Mentors: Please do not agree to supervise the student until he/she has given you the
Mentor Information Sheet and you have examined it thoroughly.***

I have agreed to serve as a Senior Project mentor. I understand that I am responsible for
monitoring the student’s progress, for meeting with him/her to discuss problems and to make
necessary adjustments, and for evaluating the project phase when it is completed.

I have received and read a two-page information sheet about the project. We have discussed the
expectations that both of us have. I understand that the student’s accomplishments must extend
beyond his/her prior knowledge in this subject area, that he/she must complete a minimum of
fifteen hours work on the portion of the project that I am supervising, and that all work must be
satisfactorily completed and verified by me no later than May 27.

Below are the goals we have set, outlining what the student will accomplish. (Mentors: Goals
cannot include researching or completing the paper. Goals should be observable and
measurable. Ask to see page 14 of the booklet for examples.)
