Dear Open Doors Partner,
I am often forced by circumstances to remember Paul’s astonishing
admission that “when I am weak, then I am strong” (2 Corinthians 12:10).
So often we in the West consider the Church around the world to be always in great
need, greatly weakened by persecution, and utterly dependent on outside help every
day. But the reality is that this seeming weakness, this daily dependence upon the
provision of God is forging in them a spiritual power that constantly amazes and
instructs me. In their weakness, they are strong, and the signs that God is doing
astounding things through them were numerous in 2009 as Open Doors expanded its
work into over 50 countries.
In China, the church is having great impact on the people, despite the fact
that in certain areas persecution-related problems abound. This church of over one
hundred million is vibrant, and offers Open Doors expanding avenues of ministry.
In Nigeria and North Korea the pressure on the church has increased
greatly. Beatings are commonplace, and the threat of torture and prison are
everyday realities. Yet, the testimony of the church is shining bright as Christ-followers
are emboldened to reach out even more to their neighbors. Opposition from
unpopular governments is the perfect backdrop against which the love and grace of
Christ can be readily seen, and Open Doors is actively working to provide these brave
believers with the training and resources they need.
Perhaps the greatest demonstration of God’s working through the gospel are the
many reports of lives turning to Christ in Muslim countries. The stories are
truly astounding, as the Spirit of God is using the Word of God to open blind eyes in
astounding ways, and growing numbers.
At a time when pressure and persecution are at historic levels, I’ve been privileged
to see how God’s strength is perfected in weakness and how the battle has
never been against governments and false religious leaders. It has always
been about redeeming souls caught in a spiritual net of sin. We are engaged in a
rescue mission, begun by God in Eden, and carried out by faithful men and women
filled with the Spirit, and committed to the mission of Christ through the gospel to the
world. And at Open Doors we have never been more encouraged, never more
excited, and never more dependent upon God for His strength to be
perfected in our weakness. By His grace, and for His glory, we believe the best is
yet to come... and I am so thankful for your partnership with us.

Bible and Literature Distribution
In 2009 Open Doors distributed over 3.5 million copies of the Bible
and other Christian material. And one of those Bibles was guided by
God into the hands of Amer, a Middle East Muslim secretly searching
to know about “this Jesus.” One day he felt compelled to drive through
a dangerous part of town. “I started questioning God, but soon found
the reason for my journey. I came upon a taxi that had broken down.
Being a mechanic, I was able to fix the problem. I saw a cross hanging
from the taxi’s mirror, and asked ‘Do you have a Bible for me?’ I knew I
needed a Bible to find Jesus. The next moment, the Christian taxi driver
handed me the Bible he had hidden in his seat. I had fixed his car, and
he had given me a Bible. What a miracle.”
Amer’s story is not unusual. That is how our great God works. He
takes what we provide Him, and multiplies it to accomplish His mission
of bringing lost souls into the family of God. At Open Doors, getting
the Bible into the hands of those who need Jesus remains our greatest
privilege, and primary task.

A pressing hardship among our persecuted brethren is the difficulty
Christ-followers have in finding jobs, earning a living, and gaining even
meager benefits from social services usually available to citizens. Over
the years, Open Doors has found innovative ways to assist these
believers to help themselves and their children.
Fady, a seven-year-old Egyptian boy with severely deformed arms
and hands, was ostracized at school because he could not read or write.
While the teachers declared that he was mentally deficient, the real
problem was his inability to hold a pencil or a book. Fady’s Sunday
School teacher Mary heard about the “Take My Hand” ministry
supported by Open Doors. She enrolled in the practical training course in
Children’s Literacy, praying that God would use it to make a difference in
her children’s lives. She soon realized that Fady was God’s answer to her
prayer. As Fady learned to read and write, he was recognized as having a
superior intelligence. Mary reported “Now Fady is standing up spiritually
and trusting God to change his life.”
In country after country, Open Doors is helping the Christian commu-
nity become self-sufficient and strong through job skills and life skills
Leadership and Pastoral Training
The villages of war-torn Southern Sudan would hardly seem the
place to launch a pastoral training program, but the cry of the church
was so great that in 1998 Open Doors began a Theological Training
Institute (TTI). That year Saphano joined other believers in the first
class. He studied for three years under instructors who spoke his
language, using materials supplied by Open Doors. Recently he
reported on his experience: “There were six of us, and five of us are
still in the ministry. And, after completing the Institute, each of us
took the training back to our villages, and we have trained a total
of 35 new pastors, 90% of whom are still in ministry for Christ. And
they are now training others to carrying on the work of Jesus here in
Sudan. This is very much to our satisfaction, and more importantly, to
the Lord’s.” Open Doors now supports 13 Institutes in Sudan.

Open Doors was involved in the training of 170,000 pastors and
Christian leaders in 2009. And the doors are open for many more in
the years to come. From the beginning, Christ Jesus demanded that
His church be led by faithful, competent, and gifted men, and it is our
privilege to partner with Him in “committing the truth to faithful men
who will be able to teach others also.” (2 Timothy 2:2)
and Advocacy Ministries
The value of Open Doors is often just being there, in person and
in prayer, to comfort the persecuted, and champion their cause to a
watching world. Iraqi Christians Hassan and Hanna, and their
children, were suddenly confronted with an extortion demand from
the local authorities. “Give us $20,000 or we will take your
children!” The police then beat their son, leaving him in need of
medical attention.
Unable to pay, and with false charges filed against them, the
family abandoned their home. They were on the run, and wanted by
the police simply because they followed Christ. “We spent the next
week traveling back and forth between the hospital and a secret
shelter, afraid we would be caught and killed.” Eventually, they
travelled to a new city where a local church connected them with
one of Open Doors’ “safehouses” where they were provided
lodging, food, and medical treatment. Open Doors also provided
trauma counseling. “Through this help and counseling, we were
able to rebuild perspective, hope, and faith. God has helped us, and
now He has led us into ministry to help others.”
It is through the ministry of millions who pray that our ministry
of “being there at the right time” is accomplished. At Open Doors,
