UNIT NAME: Advanced Professional
Development

Summary of learning outcomes

To achieve this unit a learner must:


1. Identify and evaluate key personal and professional managerial/leadership skills
including time management, running meetings, making presentations and stress
management. Explore methods to improve these skills in order to meet organizational and
own goals.
2. Carry out personal skills audits which identify in particular the preferred learning style and
study skills.
3. Prepare and implement a personal development plan

Outcome 1
Identifying the personal and professional skills and providing methods to improve
them.
Task 1
Identify and evaluate the importance of the personal and professional skills, outlined above,
for a successful manager, which enable the manager to meet organizational and own goals
(1.1a)

Task 2
Provide a range of practical methods suitable for developing or improving the skills discussed
in 1.1b

Outcome 2
Personal Skills Audits

Task 3
Provide evidence of the various personal skills audits carried out as an aid to understanding
where you stand with regards to achieving the objective of becoming a more effective
manager. These to include the obligatory analyses of the personal learning style and skills
audit. Choose from the strengths and weaknesses these reveal, samples that will affect the
development of the 4 skills from outcome 1 (1.2a).
Outcome 3 – Personal Development Plan
Task 4
Provide a personal development plan- see format supplied by Edexcel - showing how you
intend to use the knowledge from outcomes 1 and 2 to further enhance or develop the skills
you need to improve your managerial effectiveness. This to include a statement of objectives
(SMART) and a SWOT analysis.(1.3a)

Task 5
Provide evidence of the monitoring and feedback undertaken where relevant and any
adjustments made to the plan so that a more successful outcome could be achieved.(1.3b)
Task 6
Draw conclusions outlining what you have learned from your analyses and how you might use
this in the future. (1.3c)

You are required to satisfy the above task by writing a report with the following
structure: Assignment brief, Cover, Index, Introduction, Main body(tasks), Conclusion,
Appendices (if any) Bibliography using the Harvard referencing system.

Word total – 2500 – 3,000 plus or minus 10%


Nb only the introduction, main body and conclusion are counted in the word total.

Grading

Pass All criteria identified in the assignment are met.

Important Instructions:

1. You are required to satisfy the above tasks by writing a report with the following
structure: Assignment assessment sheet, Cover, Index, Introduction, Main body(tasks).
Conclusion, Appendices (if any), Bibliography using the Harvard referencing system
2. Total number of words should be between 2500-3000 (10% +/-). Only the introduction,
main body and conclusion are counted in the word total. Word process the report, use 12
point Arial or Times New Roman
3. Your answer needs to be supported by appropriate theories and academic sources
where required
4. This assignment has to be submitted online at the assignment submission area.
Last date of submission is 23/07/2010 until 23.55. No extension in last date
of submission except in special circumstances. Only the Director of Studies or
Course Manager can extend the date in such circumstances
6. If you fail all three outcomes in this assignment you cannot re-work the same
assignment but have to work on the new assignment with the new session in which case
all new dates will apply.
7. If you are referred in the assignment (failed in 2 or 3 of the outcomes) you will have the
opportunity to resubmit the same assignment with the reworked parts.
8. Plagiarism allowed is 0%, however referenced material should be used appropriately
in proportion to the length of the assignment.
9. Reference system to be used is the Harvard Reference System. There is a
comprehensive document on EThames Live Campus. A number of good documents can
also be found on the internet. Wikipedia references are not allowed in these assignments.
10. You are required to submit a hardcopy for the APD assignment on 23/07/2010
11. A submission link will be available on Livecampus on the appropriate date and time.
Please note: do not wait for the last minute to submit your work on-line as you may fail to
do so and, in such circumstances, no second chance will be given.
