GROWTH IN EXPORT
THE Reserve Bank of Fiji (RBF) says
resource-related investments, particularly
in the mining, forestry and mineral water
industries will strengthen in the coming
months.
The statement was made by the RBF after
the release of their monthly Central Bank’s
economic review for March 2011.
In its report, the RBF stated there had been
a strong growth in exports by 18.1 per cent
and slower imports growth of 2.5 per cent.
“The growth in export receipts was
underpinned by an increase in receipts
from re-exports, fish, timber, gold, mineral
water and other domestic exports, while
the growth in imports was led mainly by
higher payments for intermediate goods.
“However, investments, particularly in
the mining, forestry and mineral water
industries are expected to strengthen.”
RBF also revealed the momentum in global

“It is too late for them to complain when

this and we have been told about them.
The Police Force will not tolerate those
who break the law and fool people to
make their living. But at the same time
we are advising people to be careful.”
The company, Lily’s Marriage
Consultancy Services, had operated
from Waimanu Road in Suva.
At least eight people who had paid money
to the company were left disappointed
when they turned up to see the office
closed.
“When we asked around we were told
that the company had closed its office
and there is no contact for the manager,”
a couple told the media.
“We paid close to $13,000 to go and
work in Canada because we believed
that the company was genuine. But we
did not know that we had been fooled.
“We have been told that the Police are
investigating and we hope that they get
this man to pay for his deeds and also
those like him who have been doing this
to people.”
Another woman, who had paid close to
$3,000 for a work visa in Australia, said
she had paid out of her savings because
she wanted to work overseas.
“I was looking forward to working in
Australia, to starting a new life there,”
she said.
“Now I have lost all that. We ask Police
to check on such agents and get them off
the scene. They are not helping us at all
but taking easy money from us.”
Fijian soldier - a hero
Corporal George Finau Sale of the Royal
Welsh became the first Fijian to be awarded
a medal for his act of bravery while on
operational duties in Afghanistan, last year.
He was awarded the Military Cross by
Prince Charles at Buckingham Palace.
Corporal Sale, who has been in the army
for eight years, managed to save his platoon
and another in Central Helmand.
His Section Commander, in his
recommendation stated that Corporal Sale
was able to maneuver his section to occupy
a better position to suppress the insurgents
and to provide protection to the remainder
of his platoon.

His father George Sale said they were
proud of his son’s bravery and it was
something they would continue to cherish.
Corporal Sale is the only son in a family
of six but despite being a Samoan native,
he was born and brought up in Fiji at his
mother’s village in Sawana, Vanuabalavu
in Lau.
“In the last two years, we have localised more
than five senior management roles previously
held by expatriates”.
Prior to his new appointment, he held the
position of director of finance for the resort
complex and executive assistant manager for
Sheraton Resorts, Fiji.
Mr Ravinder has worked with Starwood Hotels
and Resorts for 12 years and also has held
financial controller positions at Sheraton sister
properties in Australia.
Mr Ravinder, was born and raised in Votualevu,
Nadi, and completed his primary and secondary
school education at Votualevu Primary and
College. He is the son of well known retired
businessman and community worker, Tara
Singh Dhesi.

Vodafone’s new $13m towers
FIVE new communication towers valued
at $13 million are expected to take
communication and Internet connections
to new heights for Vodafone customers in
the friendly north.

oversee an election. But extracting a cast-
iron guarantee of a poll is another matter
altogether. Mr McCully is hopeful the
chance to attend Rugby World Cup matches
will be the catalyst.
There are some grounds for thinking this
may be so. Fijians’ love of rugby is well
known, and the ban on the entry to this
country of members of the regime and their
families and military personnel is clearly a
considerable irritation. But New Zealand
needs to be careful.
Previous pledges for a return to democracy,
delivered to countries boasting far greater
international clout than this one, have been
dishonoured. That raises the issue of how far
Commodore Bainimarama’s word can be
trusted. It also raises the question of whether
the World Cup would, more appropriately,
be used as a stick to hammer home New
Zealand’s dissatisfaction with his regime,
rather than acting as a carrot.
There is little doubt what path Australia
would pursue. Late last month, its Foreign
Minister, Kevin Rudd, said the only person
who needed to change was Commodore
Bainimarama. He rejected any need for a
more incentive-based approach involving
the likes of the World Cup. “We’re not in
the business of legitimising what has been
a very ugly military coup,” said Mr Rudd.

change if he is to adhere to the standards and
the norms of the Pacific Islands Forum, the
standards and norms of the Commonwealth,

Reinforcement for Australia’s unbending
line has been supplied by Amnesty
International. Early last month, it said it
was deeply concerned about an ongoing
crackdown on human rights in Fiji. In the
previous fortnight, at least 10 politicians,
trade unionists, government critics and
other Fijians had been arbitrarily arrested
and subjected to severe beatings and other
forms of torture and ill-treatment at the
hands of the military.
At much the same time, Mr McCully noted
there had been little progress towards the
resumption of democracy in Fiji, following
a meeting of the Pacific Islands Forum’s
ministerial contact group. He denies now
that his latest statement indicates a different
approach to that of Mr Rudd, but says,
somewhat cryptically, that he has had more
interaction with Fiji than Australia.
In principle, there is much to be said for
ongoing communication. But since seizing
power in 2006, the regime has shown little
willingness to engage meaningfully with
the international community. Indeed, it
has turned a deaf ear to it in progressively
squashing dissent, abrogating the
constitution, dismissing the judiciary and
suppressing the media. On the surface, at
least, there seems scant evidence a corner is
about to be turned.
Mr McCully appears to be hinting otherwise.
Fiji is now “closer than it was before” to
delivering hard evidence of progress to
elections in 2014, he says. The minister
notes any relaxation of the travel ban would
depend on a report by the ministerial contact
group, as well as agreement on an election
timetable by international forums, such
as the Commonwealth. While the World
Cup gives New Zealand an ostensible
opportunity to lure concessions from the
dictator, it also gives him one more chance
to make us look foolish. We should hold our
nerve.

Police send warning to
court fine evaders
Members of the public have been warned by
police that those who do not pay their court
fines on time will have their fines doubled.
Police spokesman Atunaisa Sokomuri said
that those who do not pay their fines will
face the consequences.
“Some people have been served with bench
warrants but have not turned up and these
people have yet to pay their fines,” said
Sokomuri.
“When our officers come to serve the bench

Air Pacific ‘cancels’ orders
for new planes
Air Pacific has officially cancelled
its much-touted orders for the much-
delayed Boeing 787 Dreamliners,
managing director/chief executive
officer David Pflieger has confirmed.
The national airline is now moving
ahead seeking other replacements for
its wide body jet fleet, two Boeing
747-400s and a Boeing 767-300ER.
Air Pacific had ordered the next-
generation Boeing 787 airliners back
in April 2006 amidst much publicity
by the airline’s then leadership. The
first Dreamliner was supposed to
begin flying for Air Pacific this year.
But American aircraft manufacturer
Boeing has had continuing problems
meeting delivery deadlines. It had
pushed back dates for Air Pacific’s
first Dreamliner to 2015.
Mr Pflieger, who has been negotiating
the cancellation with Boeing, issued
a joint statement with Boeing which
said:
“Air Pacific and Boeing confirmed
that the airline had cancelled its order
for eight 787 Dreamliner aircraft
which had been scheduled for delivery
in 2015.
“Both companies noted that they were
continuing to work with each other on
solutions for replacing the airline’s
current wide-body fleet of B747 and

Boeing’s original Dreamliner
debut date was May 2008, meaning
the aircraft is already three years
overdue. The new-technology airliner
includes a composite-plastic fuselage
and wings. It has been hit by various
troubles.
A Boeing statement back in April
2006 announced an Air Pacific order
for five 787-9 Dreamliners, with three
additional purchase rights.
Air Pacific’s then managing director/
chief executive officer John Campbell
was quoted as saying at the time:”We
are delighted to have concluded an
extensive evaluation and negotiation,
and are convinced that the right
aircraft has been selected.”
Boeing said at the time: “The first
of the long-range, high-technology
jetliners will be delivered in 2011 and
will fly the airline’s key routes from
Nadi, Fiji, to Australia, New Zealand,
North America and Japan.”
In 2008, Mr Campbell confirmed Air
Pacific was taking up rights to order
three more.
Mr Pflieger, a highly experienced
American airline manager and pilot,
last year replaced Mr Campbell, who
came from a Qantas background.

participation at the 2012 Yeosu
Expo.
Expo 2012 Yeosu, Korea, is
an International Exposition
recognised by the Bureau of
International Expositions (BIE)
to be held in Yeosu, South Korea
from May 12 to August 12, 2012.
The theme of the Expo is “The
Living Ocean and Coast”.
The Yeosu Expo is anticipating

He said Fiji’s participation in
the Korean Yeosu Expo would

The Attorney-General, as the
Minister for Industry and Trade,
would appoint a National Co-
ordinating Committee (NCC) to
oversee Fiji’s preparations for the
Yeosu Expo.
The Committee will comprise
representatives from relevant
government agencies and co-opted
organisations.
The NCC will be responsible for
amongst other things: appointing
Fiji’s ‘Commissioner of Section’;
nominating a National Day;
determining the exhibition space
and exhibits; and establishing a
budgetary allocation for the 2012
budget.

Liquidity for March Easter marks increase in

Bank liquidity remained high despite a
decline over the month of March by $26.0
million to $358.9 million the Reserve Bank
of Fiji noted in its review of the month.
According to the Central Bank, this was
largely attributed to a contraction in foreign
reserves.
“In line with the surplus liquidity, interest
rates generally trended downwards,” RBF
said in the report.

the Pacific Ballet
The opening night of the Pacific Ballet
was met by overwhelming response from
a packed house that turned up to watch
renowned choreographer, producer and
director Allen Alo’s last production.
TA’ROA tells the story of the ancient
creation myths of three Polynesian cultures
Tahitian, Samoan and Maori and engages
audiences to reflect and hold on to their
cultural identities in this rapidly changing

performance by members of the Oceania

The ballet has four acts with each act telling
a story of creation from the Tahitian, Maori
and Samoan cultures, culminating in the
celebration of life and birth.
The Ballet will run till Saturday at Suva
Civic Auditorium.
The Ballet was produced with the help of
the University of the South Pacific Oceania
Centre for Arts and Culture, The French
Embassy and the University of the South
Pacific.

Tourist arrivals are expected to increase at
this time of the year traditionally being a
marker for growth.
According to Tourism Fiji’s chief executive
officer, Josefa Tuamoto, “We are moving
into Easter and we should expect good
growth around that time of the year.
“We traditionally see good numbers around
Easter and school holidays,” he said.
The impending Easter school holidays,
which offers numerous holiday packages,
as well as the approaching of the cooler
months in the Northern Hemisphere means
that Fiji’s tropical allure is a lot likely to hit
the numbers.
Credit card details stolen
for online shopping
POLICE are investigating two cases where
details of credit cards were stolen and used
for online shopping.
Police spokesman Inspector Atunaisa
Sokomuri said the complaint was received
in Suva.
He said the owners of the cards came to
realize that their credit card had been used
when they received their statements.
He said this was regarded as theft and police
took such things very seriously. He added
when making purchases online, the company

Nadi Fiesta Celebration
THE upcoming Nadi Fiesta celebration
is expected to boost investment in the
western town.
Organised by the Nadi Chamber of
Commerce, the week-long festival
will help promote and improve the
performance of the business segment in
the district.
Organizing committee vice-president
Prue Rouse said the festival would be a
golden opportunity for business houses
to meet and discuss the way forward of
promoting investment.
She said business in Nadi was improving
quickly and such a gathering would help
the industry get better.
“More business means more employment
opportunities for the people,” said Mrs.
Rouse. “This festival is organised mainly
for the people of Nadi to realize the
different kinds of businesses operating at
their doorsteps and for the people to make
use of the services offered.

Fiji’s tourism industry is hosting a 70
member of eminent North American
media professional association Society of
American Travel Writers (SATW).
Their 11-day itinerary will see the US and
Canadian travel writers, editors, video

regions around Fiji, including Viti Levu,
Vanua Levu and outer islands.
The core program is hosted by the Coral
Coast Hotel Association and host hotels
are Warwick, Naviti, Hideaway, Outrigger,

delegates visit kids
CHILDREN undergoing life changing
operation in Lautoka were visited by a
high-powered delegation.
The incoming Rotary International
president, Kalyan Banerjee, Rotary
International Auckland and the Pacific
Islands incoming district governor Allan
Eyes, and district governor of Tahiti
Nicholas Spillman, were in Lautoka to see
first-hand the work of an Interplast team
conducting reconstructive surgeries at
Lautoka Hospital.
Mr Eyes said the miraculous work done
by the Interplast team in Fiji was simply
beautiful.

Boy 4 dies in tumble dryer
A four year boy died after being spun
around inside a tumble dryer for up to two
hours while his mother slept off a hangover
at a friend’s house, an inquest heard.
Sonny Gibson suffered terrible burns and
inhaled scorching hot air after becoming
trapped inside the machine at his home.
His mother Anne-Marie Gibson found him
dead after she returned to the house.
It is believed the ‘mischievous’ child,
who loved playing hide and seek, had
climbed into the machine which started
automatically after the door slammed shut
on him, possibly when he accidentally
kicked it.
Mrs. Gibson, 42, wept as she recalled the
moment she returned from the friend’s
house on the morning of July 26 last year
having had ‘one too many’ the night before
and realised her son had disappeared.
The mother of five called the police who
began a search. When a police officer
asked Mrs. Gibson what Sonny had been
wearing last, she checked the tumble dryer
and found her youngest child dead inside
the machine wearing only his pajama top.
Mrs. Gibson, a care assistant, is separated
from the boy’s father Stewart Gibson, who
had been due to take Sonny on holiday
later that day. She said: ‘I rang his dad to
see if he had come to pick him up, but I
knew he would not have done that without
telling me.
“Then I started searching the house again
with the WPC. I looked in the washing
machine to see if I could work out what he
was wearing.
“I opened the tumble dryer and he was
there. The dryer door was closed. I just
opened it and saw him in there, he was just
curled up. He looked like he was sleeping,
but I knew he was dead.”
Sonny had been left in the house in
Ashbourne, Derbyshire, with two teenage
family members and at first Mrs. Gibson
had lied to police about events.
She told them that on the morning Sonny

“I think this is a fantastic program and I am
so proud it is our district that is funding this
trip,” said he.
He said Rotary International had sponsored
many of Interplast’s trips overseas.
“This is a very important transition,
especially for these children because it is
life-changing for them. We do not need
such a team in our country because we
have a great medical team back home,
however, to see this work is amazing.”
He added Rotary in the Pacific was a
well-structured organisation and this was
reflected in their numerous successful
programmes.

Gibson was arrested on suspicion of child
neglect, but she was later released without
charge. She told the inquest Sonny was
often cared for by other family members
while she was at work, describing him as
‘independent’. She said: “He was a lively,
bubbly, mischievous, proper little boy. He
was into everything, climbing everywhere;
he was up to mischief all the time.”
“And he loved to hide, one day we spent an
hour looking for him all over then suddenly
he popped out of nowhere.”
Attempts to keep him in his room led to
a chain being fitted on the outside of his
door, but on the night before his death it
was not put on.
Mrs. Gibson told the inquest in Derby
that Sonny had worked out how to use the
tumble dryer himself as he had used it to
warm up his ‘special blanket”.
One of his older brothers had also
previously caught him leaning inside the
tumble dryer and told him off, she said.
Home Office pathologist Professor Guy
Rutty, who examined the body, told the
inquest Sonny was lacking in proper social
care and was unclean, suffering from head
lice and poor dental care.
He said it appeared as though Sonny had
climbed into the machine on his own,
rather than being forced in, and may
have been there ‘for anything up to 120
minutes’.
Derby coroner Louise Pinder recorded a
verdict of accidental death and said Mrs.
Gibson’s decision to stay at a friend’s house
the night before Sonny’s death would no
doubt ‘haunt her for a long time to come’.
However, she said she did not believe her
absence was a ‘relevant factor in his death’.

Unhygienic juice sales at Suva MAKEOVER FOR THE GRAND OLD

THE sale of juice and cordial at a
municipal market has stopped because
of improper facilities and unhygienic
practices.
Future vendors must be clear of infectious
or skin diseases if they sell juice, the
Suva City Council said.
It said in its February monthly council
meeting, all permits for the sale of mixed
juice and cordial were suspended because
of the risk of an outbreak of water-borne
diseases like typhoid and dysentery.
The council will issue permits to those
who can show their ability to meet
requirements of the council where the sale
of juice and cordial is concerned, it said.
The council said it would not compromise
the basic food safety aspects although
the Government’s stand was to assist
people through microfinance initiatives.
The sale of juice will be permitted on the
grounds that:
*allocated area was properly paved and
clearly marked by the council;
*proper juice dispensers fitted with
dispending taps provided by vendors;
*juice dispensers be made of heavy
glass or heavy durable food grade plastic
which could withstand sterilisation;
*clean spoons to be used for mixing
juice;
*all mixing of juice should be done
inside the juice dispenser unit;
*vendors must wear gloves when mixing
it; and
*squeezing lemon with bare hands is
unacceptable.
The council also determines and approves
the appropriate areas in Suva where juice
is to be sold.
Those areas must have proper water
supply from the Water Authority of Fiji
for mains, toilets and hand washing
facilities.
SUVA’S grand old lady - the Grand
Pacific Hotel - will finally get that
makeover she has been long waiting for.
The Fiji National Provident Fund,
which owns the property, announced it
was in the final stages of a finalizing
the joint venture arrangements
with its investment partners - the
National Superfund and the Lamana
Development Corporation both of
Papua New Guinea.
FNPF chief executive officer Aisake
Taito said critical tasks that were being
undertaken included the finalization of
the hotel design, costing estimates and
a detailed feasibility study.
“Subject to confirmations of these
tasks, the plan is to commence the
construction around July this year,” Mr
Taito said.
Meanwhile, the fund confirmed that
legal action against Venture Capital
Partners (VCP) and its employee,
Dinesh Shankar was in the Suva High
Court.
Mr Taito did not elaborate on the matter
but confirmed that VCP was one of the
fund managers appointed by the fund.
The claim is in relation to losses
incurred from some of the investments
made by VCP.
FNPF will now await the outcome of
the decision of the High Court before
deciding on what future course of
action it would take.
Mr Taito said the progress on FNPF
investments was achieved in addition
to the other major reforms being
undertaken by the fund.
Mr Taito pleaded with the members
to be patient, assuring them “that the
board and management will work to
ensure that their interests are protected
at all times”.

Oil companies welcome new strategy

TWO oil companies in Fiji have welcomed
the quarterly review of fuel prices as
opposed to being done every month.
Total and Mobil have described it as a win-
win situation.
Lead country manager Fiji and S/W Pacific
Fuels Marketing Lim Ewe-Gen said it was
good to see people discussing issues to
create such a situation.
Pacific Energy managing director Roko
Nabalarua said fuel price control was
beyond their control.
“It’s a commodity that is marketed
internationally, we buy from the
international market and we bring it here to
sell to consumers,” he said.
“I think from our perspective, it’s a
government policy. We will work with
government to look at something that is
sustainable and as rightfully mentioned by
the minister we have a certain investment
that we put into the economy.
“We would like to ensure that we continue
to invest and that is why it is important for
us to work on something that is sustainable,
not only in the short-term but in the long-
term because we believe that is very
important for our existence here in Fiji,” Mr
Nabalarua said.
“I must say the price control is only on
certain sectors and there are other sectors
that are not in the price control regime.”

When the raging rhino shoves aside Australia and NZ Zealand

to woo China and its own Melanesian brothers

As the aroma of the authentic Fijian lovo
(hangi) pig and the sumptuous spicy
chicken curry cooked in Indo-Fijian style
drifted from the lavishly laid buffet table,
the tang of delicious Fijian kokoda (raw fish
in coconut milk and lemon) simultaneously
hit the olfactory nerves. This made it
difficult for the Pacific delegates to choose
what to eat. However, there was no such
dilemma when it came to show support for
Fiji and Bainimarama’s path for the nation.
The Vale Ni Bose (Great Council of
Chiefs) complex in Nasese, Suva, that
was earmarked to be the extravagant
headquarters of the now-disbanded Great
Council of Chiefs served as an appropriate
venue for the Melanesian Spearhead Group
(MSG) Summit in Suva, Fiji on 30 and 31
March, 2011. When the dust settled down
at the meeting complex, it would herald as
another slap on the blinkered vision that
Australia and New Zealand hold of Fiji.
Not that they were not warned. Some four
years ago, the warning signals were given;
the bigger brothers were urged to show
better appreciation and understanding for
the complex island issues.
In a NZ Herald opinion piece on 9 January,
2007, I had pleaded the sanctions imposed
against the people of Fiji and affecting
common people made little sense. New
Zealand’s support for a questionable,
immoral, blatantly racist, unethical and
a corrupt Qarase’s ‘democracy’, while
ideologically correct, delivered little to
common people on the ground. The poor
people of Fiji would become poorer with
the double standards of New Zealand’s
leadership which, while throwing open red
carpets for undemocratic strong leaders
were punishing a weaker and a smaller
traditional ally.
While there have been calls for election
in Fiji, the first world leaders need to
realise that mere elections did not deliver
democracy, not in Fiji. For example, what
would the Commonwealth, Australia, New
Zealand and the Pacific Island Forum do if
an election sent back the same culprits who
were raping democracy under the sanctity
of supposedly democratic elections, and
continued milking the country under the
sham of democracy and disinheriting
almost half its population under the slogan
of indigenous superiority and ethno-
nationalism. Perhaps it was time Fiji was
allowed to sort out and find a home grown
and compromising solution to its complex
political problems.
It is such home - grown solutions to
the Pacific problems that have been the
priority for the MSG. It appears that is
where the difference between the first
world Australia and New Zealand and the
third world MSG members cropped up. It
is not upon the developed neighbours to act
as the policemen for the apparently failing
systems bequeathed by the European
colonisers to these Pacific countries:
Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands,
Vanuatu and Fiji, among others.
This issue came into prominence when
Fiji was sidelined by MSG last year and
subsequently Natadola Engaging meeting
was held in Fiji. That small gathering
culminated in this fully-fledged March
2011 MSG meeting at Nasese Suva where
Bainimarama called for a reality check,
urging them to stay united in support of
each other. This message of friendship
was reiterated by Papua New Guinea’s
foreign minister Don Poyle who led
the PNG delegation to the MSG. What
was noticeable in the brotherhood get-
together was the unanimous decision
not to be moved astray by Australia or
New Zealand. The solidarity in the MSG
brotherhood was very evident, almost
tangible. Solomon Islands foreign affairs
minister Peter Shanel, Vanuatu Prime
Minister Sato Kilman and New Caledonia
representative Charles Wachetin, among
others, all supported and agreed with the
home-grown path to resolve the political
instability in Fiji.
The seed of the embryonic ‘Engaging with
Fiji’ Conference, ‘watered’ at Natadola
in 2010 subsequent to Fiji’s rebuff by
Vanuatu in response to the reported carrot-
dangling of Australia and New Zealand,
was destined to grow big. Grow big it
did in Fiji last month into a strong tree,
the MSG which now threatens the Pacific
Islands Forum (PIF) as a more Pacific-
representative, Pacific-oriented and Pacific
- sensitive body, sans ‘interfering’ Australia
and New Zealand.
Graham Davies, a Fiji-born journalist
and commentator saw this support
for Bainimarama as another coup by
(Bainimarama) acquiring the leadership
of “an alternative grouping that’s certainly
much more representative of the Pacific’s
biggest players and biggest populations –
the nearly seven million people in PNG
and 850,000 in Fiji.”
Davies has also been critical of Australian
Foreign Minister Kevin Rudd’s reluctance
in discussing any thaw or change in the
policy towards Fiji. He reported that former
Australian diplomat, Jenny Hayward-Jones
reflected that it was ironical that while
some of its strategic defence planners were
urging Australia to arm itself with US
nuclear submarines to counter a perceived
Chinese threat, “Canberra should be so
cavalier about its relationship with a
budding Chinese satellite like Fiji.”
Alex Perrottet, contributing editor of Pacific
Media Watch at Auckland University
of technology in Auckland, continued
the critique of Rudd’s Australian policy
by echoing what other commentators
on Fiji (including this author) have told
Australia and New Zealand - that they
have been kicking a small country like
Fiji in the teeth for being “undemocratic”
while sleeping with bigger undemocratic,
even communist, but economically-
advantageous and stronger trading partners.
Perrottet was critical that despite three
invitations from Bainimarama to visit
Fiji and observe the developments, Rudd
had no time to visit an undemocratic Fiji
while he named many less than democratic
countries that Rudd had visited,
including Pakistan, Egypt, Jordan, Brazil,
Chile, Bali, the United Arab Emirates,
Kazakhstan, Bahrain, China, South Korea,
among others. While Australia and Rudd
had already made up their mind on Fiji, it
appears New Zealand was thawing its hard
policy, but with a carrot-dangling that has
become the norm of the big brothers. The
carrot meant that Fiji should come up with
some firm commitments for the election in
2014 before Bainimarama and the rugby-
loving regime’s big guns would be allowed
into New Zealand where Fiji plays in the
Rugby World Cup (RWC) in October/
November, 2011
Not all Fijians were happy with this stance.
Some saw it as paternalistic attitude of New
Zealand towards Fiji that smacked of neo-
colonialism. Others view McCully’s RWC
carrot indicative of the low regard with which
he and his government considered Fiji.
Irrespective of who said what, the fact
remains that the raging rhino that started
its rush over four years ago has not slowed
down, and does not appear to be doing so
either, despite so many distractions from its
two larger developed neighbours, who now
have been pushed aside. Fiji now appears
to be more at home in its comfort zone
with its Melanesian brothers. In addition,
it has started courting some countries that
Fiji’s erstwhile friends may not regard with
approval. In such a situation Fiji can hardly
be blamed for befriending countries up
north and elsewhere.
As has been reminded on numerous
occasions, Rudd and McCully and Gillard
and Key respectively can continue to ignore
Fiji at their peril, and to the advantage of
China. They should have learnt by now
that the raging rhino does not care who or
what stands in its way.
It has been rushing on.........unstoppable
since 2006!

Sikh community in Fiji
celebrates New Year
The Sikh community in Fiji joined others
around the world in celebrating the
Vaisakhi Festival, also known as the Sikh
New Year.

country including the Sikh Temple in
Samabula.
The festival is celebrated as the Sikh New
Year and the founding of the Khalsa Panth.
The history of Vaisakhi traces its origin
from the Vaisakhi day celebrations of 1699.
This was organized by the Tenth Sikh
Guru, Guru Gobind Singh to form Khalsa
- Brotherhood of Saint Soldiers to fight
against tyranny and oppression.
The significance of this festival is the birth
of the Khalsa and this was the 312th year
of Vaisakhi celebration. “We are all sons of

Hardware prices were too high

The Fijian Bureau of Statistics has
revealed that hardware prices charged
by hardware companies were too high
in the first three months of the year.
Fijian Government Statistician, Timoci
Bainimarama said these findings
were not reflective of the Commerce
Commission’s recommendation to
control the prices on all hardware items.
“It will be reflected in the second
quarter of 2011. The reason being that
our price collection week fell before the
new prices became effective,” he said.
All items building material price index
(BMPI) for the first three months stood
at 133.0 per cent which is an increase of
1.8 per cent from the previous quarter
or the last three months of last year.
Last year’s annual (BMPI) stood at
130.9 but this number was also higher
by one point six per cent than the 2009.
Detailed sectional changes over the
previous quarter have seen a rise across
the board.
For wood and timber related materials,
the Bureau noted a rise of zero point
three per cent than the previous quarter.
Higher prices were recorded for dressed
and treated farming grade, interior
grade plywood and wide damp proof
course.
An increase of zero point eight per
cent was recorded for cement and
cement related materials. High prices
in this section were recorded for sand,
aggregate gravel, standard concrete,
bond team block, corner block, plain
end jam block and selected hard fill and
visqueen.
The price of iron and steel products was
one point six per cent higher than the
previous quarter.
Roofing iron, girth barge flashing,
aluminum isolation, galvanised iron
pipe, 6mm galvanised mild steel in
concrete, roofing nail, galvanised
louver frame, and galvanised joist
hanger and purling straps all recorded
higher prices.
In the plumbing section prices were as
high as seven point seven per cent with
higher prices being recorded for PVC
standard gutter, PVC pipes, cistern and
seat, stainless sink, concrete washtub,
standard precast concrete, wash tube,
wash hand basin, pipe, brass tap and
PVC glue.
There were also increases recorded for
paint and glass (zero point eight per
cent) floor and wall tiles (nine point
one per cent), door and window frame
(zero point nine per cent) and electrical
products were up also by zero point
eight per cent.

Brave toddler Alfie Clamp
stuns doctors after being born
with extra strand of DNA
A BRITISH toddler has become the first
person in the world to be born with an
extra strand in his DNA, in a condition
so rare doctors don’t even know its
name.
Alfie Clamp, from Warwickshire, northern
England, has a seventh chromosome which
has an extra arm.
Doctor discovered the extremely rare
condition when Alfie, who was born blind
and with severe disabilities, was just six
weeks old.
A series of tests revealed the extra strand
of DNA, which has left the medical world
baffled.
His parents, Gemma and Richard,
and doctors have no idea what his life
expectancy will be or whether his condition
will even improve.
Dolly Parton wants to sing
at British royal wedding
Country singer Dolly Parton is keen
to sing at the royal wedding of Prince
William and Kate Middleton later this
month, and that too a duet with Elton
John.
Parton wants to sing her hit number “I will
always love you”. She said it would be a
“great” song for the royal couple’s first dance
after they walk down the aisle April 29th.
Indians spend more on hotel
stay than Europeans
Indian travelers were the sixth largest
spenders in hotels overseas in 2010, ahead
of countries such as the United Kingdom,
France, Germany and Singapore, according
to a study by a leading hotel booking
website.
On an average, Indians spent Rs.6,722
(about USD 152) per night while travelling
overseas in 2010, compared to Rs.4,136
while travelling within the country, as per
the hotel price index compiled by Hotels.
com.
However, Indians were also one of the
most value-conscious when it came to
travelling within the country and were at
12th position in spending on room nights
for domestic travel.
“Strong economic growth over the past
decade has meant that there are many more
Indians with a lot more disposable income.
Thus the Indian travelers are emerging
as a high spending addition to the world
travel market,” said Abhiram Chowdhry,
marketing director for Asia Pacific at
Hotels.com.
According to him, Indians are “more than
willing to spend more than many others on
their holiday experiences”.

The little boy has digestive problems, needs
drugs to help his body absorb nutrients and

I was absolutely devastated. As a pregnant
mum you spend nine months thinking
about what it will be like when your baby
takes their first step or claps their hands.
“Having a boy like Alfie makes you
appreciate the little things. He didn’t roll
over until he was 18 months old, but we
were so excited when he did.”

Nobody’s asked me about that but I might
offer it. (I would even sing with) Whitney
Houston, I would do anything. Elton John

New York kept its place as the most
expensive overseas destination for Indian
travelers after a 7 percent rise took the
average nightly rate in the big apple to
Rs.11,686.
This was driven by a combination of
factors, including the recovery in domestic
and business demand in the US and the
strength of the dollar.
Hotel rents in Singapore too showed a big
increase with the average prices going up
26 percent on a year on year basis in that
city.
However, there were still some great value
destinations for travelers who were prepared
to shop around as Bangkok witnessed the
biggest price fall from Rs.4,557 in 2009 to
Rs.4,015 in 2010.
Americans continued to be the biggest
spenders when they travel abroad according
to the Hotels.com index, spending Rs.7,309
a day on average.
Singaporeans spend about 38 percent more
at home than while travelling abroad.
Similarly South Africans are the savviest
spenders on international trips paying about
38 percent less for hotel rooms abroad than
while travelling within their country.
Qantas passengers hit
with seat booking fee
THE next time you want to book a
seat next to your partner or children
on an international Qantas flight be
prepared to pay up for the privilege.
The airline has begun charging economy
passengers $20 per person per leg of the
journey to select a seat via its website.
Those who want to avoid the fee will
have to request a seat upon arriving at
the airport, taking the risk that there may
not be enough free seats left to be able sit
beside loved ones.
The airline’s Advance Seat Selection
option can be used for exit row seats but
will attract a fee of up to $160 for long
haul international flights.
Those travelling on domestic flight or
in first, business and premium economy
cabins will avoid the seat selection fee.
Frequent flyers and members of their
loyalty scheme will not be charged.
A Qantas spokesperson said that the new
initiative will benefit passengers.

An air traffic controller in the US
state of Nevada was asleep and out of
communication for about 16 minutes
while a medical plane was landing, federal
officials have said.
The plane, carrying at least three people,
landed safely at Reno-Tahoe International
Airport, after failing to rouse the controller.
The employee has been suspended while
Wednesday’s incident is investigated.
The news comes amid a series of similar
incidents in the US this year.
The Piper Cheyenne plane, which landed at
0200 local time (1900GMT) on Wednesday,

A US company has invented a
washable microchip to track frequently
“souvenired” items like robes, towels
and bed linens, costing the Australian
industry millions each year.
The radio-frequency identification
chips, designed by Linen Technology
Tracking, are already being used by
three hotels in New York, Miami and
Honolulu and according to the company
have already successfully helped to bust
thieves.
The Honolulu hotel, which introduced
the technology last year, has reduced
theft of its pool towels from 4000 a
month to just 750 - a saving of more
than $15,200 a month.
“After being in the industry for many
years, I understand the challenges
hotels face in monitoring linen,” Linen
Technology Tracking Executive Vice
President William Serbin told CNN.
“Any given month, they can lose 5 to
20 per cent of towels, sheets and robes.

window of a minivan his mother drove
into the Hudson River Tuesday night
probably had less than two minutes to
escape, a fire official said. The boy’s
mother and three of his siblings died.
The deaths occurred just moments after
police in Newburgh, a small working-class
city about 100 km north of Manhattan,
received a call of a domestic disturbance
Tuesday at the woman’s home. They
responded, but not before the woman
— identified as 25-year-old Lashanda
Armstrong — had piled her four children
into the vehicle and driven six blocks to the
river bank.
Before the car sank, a 10-year-old son,
Lashaun, escaped through a window, swam
to shore, and ran to a nearby fire station for
help.
His siblings, Landon, 5, Lance, 2, and
Lainaina, 11 months, died in the car
along with their mother, and at a news

V-Australia passengers hear
explosion from plane on

HUNDREDS of Australians are
stranded in Los Angeles after a
V-Australia flight was forced to make
an emergency landing shortly after
take off Wednesday night.
Sydney-bound flight VA02 was due to
leave LA shortly after 10pm but the
plane was returned to the terminal.
The plane was carrying about 350

Officials identified the father of the three
children who died as Jean Pierre and said
they had spoken with him but did not give
additional details. They did not identify the
father of Lashaun.
Police found the van and the bodies of
the woman and children in about 8 feet of
water off the dock next to a local restaurant
called Gully’s. The restaurant is closed
for renovations, so there were no apparent
witnesses other than the boy and possibly
a woman whom police described as a
passerby who spotted the boy as he fled
the scene. She accompanied him to the fire
station.
Fire Chief Michael Vatter said Lashaun was
“soaking wet” and badly shaken when he
showed up at the station. “He was having
difficulty speaking, of course, and just was
repeating about the car being in the water
with his mom and siblings,” Vatter said.
Police Chief Michael Ferrara said officials
first received word of a problem at the
home at 7:45 p.m. Tuesday when a relative
of Armstrong phoned them to report
that there was a domestic disturbance.
The relative, who was not identified, had
been on the phone with the mother and
was concerned, based on her talk with
Armstrong and on what Ferrara said, was
a “history of domestic” dispute between
Armstrong and Pierre.
“They thought there was trouble,” he said
of the relative who made the first call.
Within minutes, police had responded but
found nobody home. At nearly the same
time, the 10-year-old showed up at the fire
station. Vatter and Ferrara said Lashaun
somehow managed to open a power
window before the car sank.

Chaudhry trial goes
to High Court
High Court judge Justice Daniel
Goundar has ruled that an application
made by the state to transfer former
Prime Minister Mahendra Chaudhry’s
trial to the High Court was valid.
In his ruling, Justice Goundar said
state lawyers were in compliance
with Section 188 (2) of the Criminal
Procedure Decree justifying its validity
which gave his court jurisdiction to try
Chaudhry.
He said in the present case, the parties
were accorded due process.
“The prosecutor was given an
opportunity to make the application and
the accused was given an opportunity
to respond to that application,” Justice
Goundar said

Why did Stephen Harper lie about family reunification during the leaders’ debate?

the board in terms of family class.” – Stephen

If there is any doubt about how Stephen
Harper and the Conservatives are using
false information and hiding the facts from
Canadians, the above quote should give
some insight into their strategy.
This election is happening for one reason: the
Conservative government has refused to be
honest and upfront about the costs of fighter
jets, prisons and corporate tax cuts, which
combined are estimated to cost upwards of
$50 billion.
This is the first government in history to
be found in contempt of Parliament, and
the Prime Minister’s lack of respect for
democracy is clear.
Canadians have a right to know what the
government will spend their money on.
But for four months, the electorate was
stonewalled when they demanded to know
how much their wallets were on the hook for.
The same thing applies to the continuing
deception that Mr. Harper is now using
to cover up for his shameful record on
immigration. He outright lied about
increasing family class immigration in front
of the entire country during the leader’s
debates this past week.

consider any submissions made on
behalf of the accused and he did not
give reasons for his order.
Chaudhry submitted that the transfer
is invalid and that the case should be
remitted to the Magistrates’ Court for
consideration of the State’s application
for transfer.
Justice Goundar ruled against
Chaudhry’s application.
The Fiji Labour Party leader is
charged with 12 different charges
including money laundering and tax
infringements.
In fact, whereas family class visas accounted
for 28% of all permanent visas in 2006 when
Stephen Harper first came to power, this
figure has now dropped by 25% as of 2010.
Canada will grant 11,200 visas for offshore
parents and grandparents in 2011, down
from its target of 16,200 last year. Since the
Conservative government was elected, many
have seen the wait times for sponsorship of
parents and grandparents increase from 3-4
years to almost 6-7 years.
There are many factors that contribute to
a successful immigration system, yet the
Immigration Minister Jason Kenney is far
more concerned in playing politics with, as
he describes it, “very ethnic” ridings.
If you make deep cuts to funding for our
foreign embassies and immigration staff, then
processing times will go up. Experts predict
that the time it takes to complete immigration
applications will soon hit over 10 years.
If you cut settlement services by over $50
million, including an $8 million cut to British
Columbia, then immigrants will have a very
difficult time becoming comfortable and
thriving in their new country.
And if you cut back on family class visas
by such a dramatic number, you destroy the
support network supplied by strong family
units that Canadian immigrants rely upon.
These are all measures that have been

THE Prime Minister of Japan Naoto Kan
of Japan on April 8th issued a statement of
gratitude in the aftermath of the devastated
earthquake that hit Japan last month.
In the statement he expressed his sincere
appreciation on behalf of the people and
Government of Japan for the messages of
condolences, sympathies, prayers, words
of hope and support from governments and
people all over the world, including from the
Republic of Fiji.
PM Naoto Kan said in the statement: “A
month has passed since an earthquake of
unprecedented scale struck Japan taking
thousands of precious lives.”
“Even today, evacuation shelters are still
refuge for more than 150,000 people.”
The Japanese PM said that during those
desperate times, people from around the
world rallied to their side and offered hope
and inspiring courage.

President Hu Jintao of the People’s Republic
of China (PRC) has confirmed China’s
respect to Fiji’s new path.
“The People’s Republic of China fully
respects the development path Fiji has
chosen towards moving forward and is ready
to further extend the relations between the
two countries into new heights,” President
Hu Jintao said.
This message was relayed to Fiji’s
Ambassador to China, Commodore Esala
Teleni, after presenting his credentials to the
President on Tuesday. Minister for Foreign

government over the past five years.
Reaching out to Canada’s cultural
communities must be done for the right
reasons, and using new Canadians for
political gain is a cynical and manipulative

When I look at Newton-North Delta, the

immediately restoring family reunification
visas back to the level it was in 2006,

how important this policy is to the success or

often done during decades of fighting to
clear his name after serving time for a
robbery he didn’t commit.
The 73-year-old retired pipe-fitter, who
spent five years in jail in the 1960s, won
an $8.6 million civil lawsuit against the
federal government.
Combined with a previous $4.4-million
settlement with Quebec, Hinse’s $13-million
package would be the largest such award
in Canadian history, should it withstand a
possible appeal.
“Psychologically, I was affected and (the
judgment) represents an enormous relief,”

still pay more than Americans — anything
between 20 to 30 per cent more on consumer
goods — those border-crossing shoppers
won’t see a reason to buy local any time soon.
“They should be on par. I don’t know what’s
going to be required,” Cran said.
BMO Capital Markets has already started to
see a small increase in the number of cross-
border shoppers as Canadians seek to take
advantage of lower U.S. prices.
That will put some downward pressure
on prices in Canada, said Douglas Porter,
deputy chief economist with BMO, though
not enough to ensure the price gap is fully
closed.
“They are never going to equalize at today’s
exchange rate, though we will see some
chipping away at the price gap in the year
ahead,” said Porter. “I’m not sure even if
we stayed at par for years and years and

In a 73-page ruling released Wednesday,
Superior Court Justice Helene Poulin
chastised the federal government for failing
to examine Hinse’s allegations, made as far
back as the 1970s, that he was not the man
who violently robbed a couple in Mont-
Laurier, Que. in 1961.
“Not only did the legal mistake affect Hinse
but, worse still, institutional indifference
led to him losing his quality of life,” the
judge wrote.
“Hinse is a shattered man ... shot down and
destroyed; his mind is scattered.”
Hinse was a 24-year-old labourer when he
was arrested after armed men robbed and
beat two victims. Hinse was sentenced to
15 years in prison in 1964 and was released
on parole in 1969.
He spent decades trying to clear his name
and the Quebec Court of Appeal quashed
his conviction in 1994.
Hinse then convinced the Supreme Court
to hear his case. In 1997, the high court
acquitted him of the crime, ruling the
evidence presented at his 1964 trial had
been inadequate.
But the damage was already done. Hinse’s
voice cracked Thursday as he recalled
squalid conditions and his broken spirit at
years that the spread would ever completely
vanish.”
On Thursday, BMO Capital Markets released
a report that found Canadians pay 20 per
cent more than Americans on goods ranging
from Blu-ray movies to running shoes. That
difference in pricing was only seven per cent
when the Toronto-based bank conducted a
similar study in July 2009, even though the
loonie was trading below 92 cents U.S. at the
time.
The study released Thursday was conducted
when the loonie was trading at 98 cents U.S.,
meaning the difference might be even higher
Friday. On Thursday, the loonie closed
trading at just over $1.04 U.S..
The Consumers’ Association of Canada
estimated that Canadians are paying 30 per
cent more for goods than their American
counterparts. That figure is based on
comparing price changes over the last three
years on everything from greeting cards to
books, televisions and cars.
“The way we see it, we’ve been virtually at
parity for four years and Canadian consumers
have every right to expect more equity in the
prices between Canadian and U.S prices,”
Cran said.
So why are prices so different if the loonie is
trading at a three-year high?
“The very simple solution is greed on the part
of Canadian retailers. They refuse to pass on
the savings,” Cran said.
Porter said the American market for
consumer goods is quite simply more
competitive than in most other countries,
Canada included.
“Companies and firms will do whatever they
can to keep prices in check in the U.S. and for
St-Vincent-Paul prison, north of Montreal.
“I slowly banged my head against the wall
over and over again, a little harder and a
little harder until the pain would be more
intense than the other pain I was feeling,”
he said, fighting back tears.
The attorney general of Canada did not
immediately say if it would file an appeal.

He showed his love of art, presenting his
lawyers with a Van Gogh painting while
displaying another work that reminds him

“When you’re wrongly accused, this is
how you feel,” he said.

shoulder, trimmed of fat and cut into
cubes

• 1 medium white onion, medium diced
• 4 stalks of celery, medium diced
• 4 cloves of garlic
• 2 tablespoons (25 ml) Dijon mustard
• 1 tablespoon (15 ml) liquid honey
• 1 teaspoon (5 ml) chili paste
• 1 cup (250 ml) chicken stock
• 1 cup (250 ml) dry sherry
• 1 each orange, lemon and lime, using
the zest and juice of each

• 1/4 tsp. garlic powder
• 6 medium cooked shrimp, finely
chopped
• 2 green onions, finely chopped
Directions:
Cut peeled eggs lengthwise into halves.
Slip out yolks; mash with fork.
Stir in Miracle Whip, mustard, Tabasco,
garlic powder and salt; taste and adjust
seasonings.
Stir in shrimp and green onions. Fill
whites with egg yolk mixture, forming
a slightly rounded top.
Arrange on a serving dish.
Cover tightly and refrigerate.
Garnish with paprika and chopped fresh
parsley before serving.
Directions:
Heat pan. Add oil and cubed lamb.
Season with kosher salt and fresh
ground pepper. Sear until evenly
browned. Add onion, celery and
garlic cloves and continue to brown
for a few seconds until vegetables are
tender. Deglaze pan with sherry and
add all remaining ingredients. Bring
to a simmer on stove top. Cover and
place in 350 F (180 C) oven and
braise until lamb is very tender (about
60 to 90 minutes). Adjust seasoning
of braising liquid, if necessary.
Serve over steamed basmati rice and
garnish with chopped cashews and
fresh herbs.

Calgary digs out of Edmonton to rethink lower speed limits

April snow storm
A blanket of snow fell on Calgary
Wednesday night, causing poor driving
conditions on city roads.
Between 10 - 20 cm of snow had fallen on
Southern Alberta, Environment Canada
reported Thursday morning, and the storm
was heading north.
In Calgary, city snow plows were
struggling to clear the roads. There were
about a dozen vehicle crashes and police
were urging drivers to be cautious – to
slow down and not drive too closely
behind other vehicles.
Environment Canada forecasted 10 to 15
cm of snow through Central Alberta, with
Fort Saskatchewan expected to get the
heaviest snowfall, with up to 20 cm.
The snow was expected to gradually taper
off in Alberta by Thursday night.
City council is not about to reduce speed
limits in all Edmonton neighbourhoods,
despite the success of a pilot program.
Drivers did slow down in those
neighbourhoods and, where there were
collisions, the injuries were less severe,
said city staff.
The transportation committee is now
considering keeping the reduced speed
limit in some neighbourhoods and
returning others to 50 km/h.
But Mayor Stephen Mandel said
there should be one speed limit for all
neighbourhoods.
“I don’t have a problem if council wants
to make all neighbourhoods 40 km/h in the
city,” he said. “Then it’s a bylaw and it’s
done.
“But if we’re going to have half 40, why
don’t we have some 25, couple of 15, two

The BMO report calculated that a basket
of representative goods sold on both sides
20.4 per cent more than their neighbours
to the south.
Sample items included a pair of cargo
shorts sold at the Gap, which were priced
15 per cent higher in Canada, as well as
a Blu-Ray copy of “The King’s Speech,”
which was 28 per cent cheaper in the U.S.

Porter said that a high dollar means that
Canadian distributors and retailers have to
pay more to bring in goods and get them
out to consumers.
“A lot of those costs are in Canadian
dollar terms and they aren’t going to
change just because the Canadian dollar
has changed,” Porter said.
Another reason the American economy
breeds lower prices are because it is
“probably most competitive in the world,”
which forces businesses to fight for every
customer Porter said.
“Companies around the world want to
increase their market share as much
as possible in the U.S. and they will be
incredibly competitive in the U.S.,” he
said.
But Porter said the bottom line is that the
exchange rate is apt to change much more
quickly than consumer prices.
Boy runs young sister

A six-year-old girl suffered serious
injuries when her brother ran her over
with the family car near Lighthouse Cove
in Lakeshore, Ont., Wednesday morning.
Ontario Provincial Police said a nine-year-
old boy was playing behind the wheel of
a GMC Savana van and accidentally put it
in reverse, striking his sister with the back
wheel of the van, around 8 a.m.

moving on to fourth grade. No one wants to
repeat a grade, but if this happens to you,
you’re not the only one. Repeating a grade
can be the right thing, though, because you
get another chance to complete the work and
learn what you need to know to do well when
you do move up to the next grade.
Why Some Kids Have to Repeat
Most kids need to repeat a grade because they
are having trouble with the work or other
stuff they need to do in that grade. Some
kids may have learning disabilities. For
instance, a kid might have trouble reading.
Other kids might have been ill or absent for a
long time, so they didn’t get a chance to learn
everything they needed to learn.
Who decides if you should repeat a grade?
It’s often a team, including your parents,
your teacher, counselor, and principal. Your
teachers and parents aren’t trying to be mean
when they decide a kid should repeat a grade.
Everyone is trying to do the right thing so
that a kid will learn what he or she needs to
know before moving on.
You probably know that the stuff you learn
is like building blocks. First, you learn your
numbers. Then you learn how to add, then
subtract. Later, you’ll learn how to multiply
and divide. If you didn’t learn your numbers,
how could you do other math?

schoolwork, but he or she is having trouble

you figure out what to do.

be friends. Try to get together after school,
on the weekends, and during vacations.
Support your friend and never tease him or
her. Sticking by him or her in this tough time

Sometimes, there’s no way to avoid having
to repeat a grade. If you have learning trouble
or you missed a lot of school, there may be
no way around it. But you might be able to
make up work during summer school or with
a tutor who comes to your house.
If you’re struggling with school, be sure
to tell a parent right away. Work with your
teacher and the school counselor to figure
out what the problems are and how to solve
them. Try to handle problems right away,
instead of just hoping things will get better.
It’s easier to catch up if you get help quickly.
School can be hard work - there’s no denying
it. But there are strategies you can learn to
help it go a little better for you. For instance,
if you study a little bit each night, that can
make it easier - and less scary - than having
to learn everything the night before a test.
With school, set a goal for yourself and keep
working toward it bit by bit. Ask for help if

after 36 years at the Bear Creek Park in Surrey

Former Ba goalkeeper Shiraz Mohammed and
Nadi’s, Tavua import winger, extraordinaire
Mohammed Azam were both big name premier
players in 1975.
Their deep-rooted nostalgia and the passion for
sport is what makes this story so unique from
others.
They live to talk about their love for their
district long after their playing days.
The famed districts stars embraced one another
as onlookers; had no recollection of the star
power presence.
“Fate has it for us that we meet at soccer fields
after our playing days,” said Azam.
He said seeing an old fellow player brings a
flow of memories.

Anthony Mundine wins re-match with Garth Wood with

According to Anthony Mundine, his re-match
win over surprise conqueror Garth Wood in
Brisbane on Wednesday night would herald
his boxing resurrection.
But critics will call it a reprieve, after Mundine
postponed retirement talk by drawing on all his
reserves to avenge December’s shock loss and
claim a unanimous points decision.
While Wood immediately called for another
re-match, Mundine - boasting a nasty cut above
his right eye - appeared to cling to a belated
overseas move for big money fights after the
middleweight bout.
“If I can beat Garth Wood ... then I believe I can
beat anyone in the world right now,” Mundine
said post-fight.
“Garth has a very tricky style. You have to be a
very seasoned fighter to cope.
“A lot of people wrote me off before tonight -
this is for the fans.”
Mundine won over the judges 96-92 96-92
95-93 to extend his record to 41 wins and four
losses.
Wood is now 10 wins, two losses and one draw.
He was cautioned early about blows to the back
of the head, prompting some constructive words
of advice from a lippy Mundine.
Wood continued to cramp and frustrate
Mundine and finished round three strongly with
some quality shots.
Mundine looked unhappy early, complaining of
rabbit punches and low blows.
Both traded shots looking for an early exit in
round five, and Wood returned to his corner
with a cut under his right eye and soon Mundine
was bleeding above his.
The fight was delayed in the eighth round as
Mundine received attention to his widening
wound.
Wood was caught with a big left hook late in
the ninth and wanted to fight on but was forced
to endure a standing eight count after being
deducted a point for holding.
He was then floored by a right uppercut early in
the 10th, prompting another count.
Wood tried to lift with former three-time world
champion Jeff Fenech in his corner but Mundine
could sense victory, waving to the crowd before
the final bell.

US Lingerie Football League goes to Canada

The US-based Lingerie Football League (LFL), where
young women play the game in, well, lingerie, has named
Toronto its first international franchise.
Launched in 2009, the LFL - which is more about titillation
and showing skin than field skills - has become a highly
profitable business.
Currently, the league has five teams - Cleveland Crush, San
Diego Seduction, Philadelphia Passion, Baltimore Charm
and Orlando Fantasy. Each team has seven players.
Playboy magazine featured 10 players from the league in its
February issue.
The league has become a platform for women to enter the
entertainment industry. It does not pay players but covers
their travel costs.
Announcing the league’s extension to Toronto, Mitchell
S. Mortaza, founder and chairman of the LFL, said, “It’s
become the most successful women’s professional league in
the US in (two years). It’s really an opportunity for them to
be elevated to (the level) of major sports for guys, and be on
the cover of everything ranging from Playboy to ESPN to
Fox News channel.”
In a statement, Mortaza said, “It has been an incredible
journey over the first two seasons of LFL football, our
expansion into Toronto is the first step toward a more
significant footprint of the LFL brand into Canada.
“Our game will translate well into a country that has a
tremendous sports culture that not only understands football
but is fanatical in its support.”
Lingerie Football League’s Toronto launch will take place
in September 2012. It could be extended to other Canadian
cities like Edmonton, Calgary, Saskatchewan, Winnipeg,
Montreal, Hamilton and Ottawa, according to reports.

Royce Gracie expects to make return to MMA at UFC Rio in August

UFC Hall of Famer and MMA legend Royce
Gracie is looking to return for one last fight in
the organization at UFC Rio in August, and it
appears that it’s coming closer to a reality.
In an interview with UOL Esporte (translated
by Tom Mendes at BloodyElbow.com), the
44-year-old Gracie revealed he’s in talks with
the UFC and expects to have an opponent lined
up for the UFC’s second event in Brazil in the
next couple of weeks.
“It would be the perfect place to do my last fight.
I never fought in Rio de Janeiro and I couldn’t be
more psyched,” he said. “We are negotiating [the
fight deal], but we should have it finalized in two
weeks. We only had an initial contact and I don’t
even have an opponent yet, but we should have
that finalized soon.”
“My weight is the same as it was twenty years ago
[80kg], I am still training, keeping the blade sharp.
I follow a very strict diet. I never drank, never
party, Carnaval, none of that... I’m ready to fight.”
The very first UFC tournament winner, Gracie was
synonymous with the UFC in the early years of
the organization, before the sport of mixed martial
arts became the sport it is today. However, the last
time he was in the Octagon, he was badly beaten
by Matt Hughes at UFC 60, and he hasn’t fought
since 2007. A return to action has been discussed
since the UFC announced their return to Brazil,
but now it could be more than just talk when the
UFC comes to Rio de Janeiro on August 27.
Penick’s Analysis: I don’t know who the UFC
could possibly put him in against that in 2011

Now the UFC is doing the same thing.
Same-weight champs exist in Strikeforce and the
UFC.
Ideally, all the best mixed martial artists in the
world would fight under one umbrella.
At the very least, the way has to be cleared to
allow fighters to cross from Strikeforce to the
UFC and vice versa.
And as a third and final option, the fight clubs
should host champ vs. champ events.
Fans want — and deserve — to see the best
fighters in the world fight each other.

A Dozen Dos and Don’ts
Heed these super hints for taking your
grandchildren up, up, and away
Let’s face it; traveling with grandchildren is
a whole new world. It’s nothing like it was
traveling with our own kids when they were
young. Then, travel was a breeze. It was
mostly piling in the car, with pretty haphazard
advance planning. All we had to remember
was to bring some snacks, and to seat siblings
out of arm’s reach of one another. On the
road entertainment consisted mainly of mind
games and songs: playing “I spy something
yellow,” seeing who could spot the most
out-of-state license plates, or singing endless
choruses of “She’ll Be Comin’ ‘Round the
Mountain.”
Today, everything’s complicated, electronic,
and high-tech. Kids are attached to their own
individual video games, DVD players, and
iPods. Travel now covers greater distances
and reaches more exotic destinations.
Naturally, more sophisticated travel requires
more coping skills.
Take flying, for example. What was once
a simple act of boarding a plane and
settling in for a lovely ride has morphed
into an experience fraught with dozens of
potential pitfalls. Our adult children have
become experts in anticipating these pitfalls
and sidestepping them. I’m amazed and
impressed with their creativity, and have
happily adopted these tips for our own travels
with the grandchildren.
Some Fine Family Classic Travel Dos and
Don’ts:
Preflight Strategies
DO consider taking along a friend or cousin
who’s close in age to your grandchild. Not
only will this provide your grandchild with
a buddy, but it will also have the advantage
of creating a stronger bond between cousins.
DO take a snapshot of the children right
before you leave home. Armed with this
image in your digital camera, you can help
authorities know exactly who to look for
in case a child wanders away in a crowded
terminal, amusement park, or shopping mall.
DO dress the grandchildren in identical
outfits, or in matching-colored shirts, jackets,
or baseball caps. If one strays, you can point
to the others and say, “She looks just like
this.”
DON’T carry a child who can walk through
the security screener. If you get tagged for
extra scrutiny, that child will be subject to the
same second check.
In-Flight Tactics
DO create a “fun pack” filled with activities
and snacks for each child. Our unbreakable
rule is that this pack cannot be opened until

the plane is airborne. (The kids love this
rule; it allows the excitement to build as they
anticipate what all the fun stuff might be.)
DO keep a supply of antibacterial wipes on
hand. We use them to swab down everything
around their airplane seats — those grungy
tray tables (front and back), armrests, window
shades, and any other places the kids are
going to touch. This is especially important
with younger ones who still put their hands
into their mouths. If there are airline-issue
pillows or blankets within reach, get rid of
them.
DO pack a change of clothes for each child
in your carry-on bag. Nothing is more
uncomfortable than a juice-soaked shirt or
pair of pants.
DON’T make the mistake of underestimating
the number of diapers you might need
in-flight. (Be sure to bring along a trash bag,
too, just in case you’re not allowed to leave
your seat to get to the bathroom.)
DO bring along the car seat, even if the child
is old enough to sit without it. It serves as a
safe haven, comfortable and familiar. And it
also confines them safely in one place.
At the Hotel
DO check prices in advance and calculate the
money you will or might save with access
to a hospitality suite that offers breakfasts,
snacks, unlimited juice, and more. Also,
all-inclusive resorts are an ideal solution for
anyone traveling with young children (those
same little ones who love to order $5 sodas
and $12 hamburgers, which they never even
finish).
DO request a small fridge in your room so
you can keep milk and juice handy. (You can
try to stuff them in the mini bar, but be aware
that many mini bars operate on sophisticated
sensors that charge you automatically for
anything that has been moved.) Also, ask
housekeeping to remove those enticing
candy bars or fun-looking soft drinks that are
displayed on the counter above the minibar.
This way, there will be no temptations or
accidental openings of overpriced goodies.
DON’T expect the excitement levels to
last all day. No matter how thrilling and
fabulous the destination, everyone needs a
little downtime. You might use this break
for a refreshing nap while the kids chill out
with a crafts project or a good book. (I once
brought along watercolor essentials — paint,
brushes, special paper, how-to books — so
the grandchildren could re-create the sights
they were seeing to share later with the family
back home. This project was a huge hit.)
DO make sure each of the grandchildren has
a camera. Being a “photographer” helps kids
focus on the trip and lets them play “tour
guide” when they show the results afterward.
DON’T forget to keep a day-by-day trip
scrapbook. We do a page a day, right before
dinner, and slide it into a plastic sleeve so
each kid has a custom memory book.
DO remember to bring along a night light.
A strange hotel room can be a scary place in
the dark.

Raj Kapoor to be
honored at IIFA Awards
International Indian Film Academy
(IIFA) and Toronto International
Film Festival (TIFF).
The tribute to the Shree 420
veteran of Indian film is scheduled
to be one of the main features of the
Toronto events.
Rishi Kapoor, the late actor’s son
who was recently seen in Patiala
House, spoke about the upcoming
homage.

in Interlaken, Yash Chopra
was honoured with the title of
‘Ambassador of Interlaken’ making

the Hoheweg - Interlaken’s famous
main street.

Introducing you to some such
charming kids from Bollywood.
Popular personalities whom you know
quite well, but faces that you perhaps
might not be able to identify at first
glance. That’s because we are talking
of some such actors who started quite
young. Started as child artists!
Sanjay Dutt
Yes, our very own Munnabhai faced the
camera for the first time when he was
just 12 years old. Sanjay Dutt was an
item boy back then. In his father Sunil
Dutt’s film Reshma Aur Shera (1971),
Sanjay Dutt danced in a qawalli song.
And even as a child, his dance steps
had the trademark Sanjay Dutt impact.
Now you know he isn’t called Sanju
‘baba’ for no reason.
Sridevi
Sridevi needs no introduction. But films
where she featured as a child artist do.
This superstar of the 80s started as a
child artist when she was just ‘4’ years
old. She appeared in a string of Tamil
and Telugu films and in most of them
she played mythological characters.
In 1979, she got her first break in
Hindi cinema with Solvan Saawan
which was a remake of her 1977
Tamil film Pathinaru Vayathinile.
Padmini Kolhapure
As a child artist, Padmini Kolhapure has
many films to her credit which include
Dream Girl, Zindagi, Saajan Bina
Suhagan and Thodi Si Bewafai. But
her most noted roles include Satyam
Shivam Sundaram, Insaaf Ka Tarazu
and Gahrayee.
In Satyam Shivam Sundaram (1978) she
played a young Zeenat Aman with a scar
mark on her face. In Gahrayee (1980)
she played a school girl possessed by a
spirit in her body. In Insaaf Ka Tarazu
(1980) she played Zeenat Aman’s
younger sister who is a victim of child
molestation by Raj Babbar.
Interestingly she was paired
opposite Raj Babbar in Kirayedaar,
six years later.
Aamir Khan
Ok, we all know by now that Aamir
Khan appeared as a child artist in
Yaadon Ki Baarat (1973). He looked
cute in the 2-minute appearance in the
title song where he raises his little finger
to indicate nature’s call. The film was
directed by his uncle Nasir Hussain and
Aamir played the younger role of Tariq,
who again was his uncle.
But how many know that as a child
artist, Aamir has also worked in a film
called Madhosh (1974)? Two decades
later, his brother Faisal Khan debuted in
a film by the same name.
Some more interesting trivia! Which
is Aamir’s debut film as a grown
up actor? No, it wasn’t Qayamat
Se Qayamat Tak (1988), as is the
popular belief. He made his debut in
Ketan Mehta’s Holi (1984) which co-
starred his Lagaan director Ashutosh
Gowariker. So Mangal Pandey wasn’t
his first film with Ketan Mehta.

a true story, Soul Surfer opens

Say Hawaii and people the
world over think of sun and
sand. Water also figures rather
prominently in any description
of the Aloha State. Long loved
by scores of tourists these
tropical islands also make home
to a robust population. Native
born Hawaiians and long term
residents have grown to love
the lifestyle of this tropical
paradise. Included among this
mix is the Hamilton family.
Led by Tom and Chari the
Hamilton clan seem to have
water in their blood. Stalwart
parental types Dennis Quaid
(Traffic) and Helen Hunt
(Twister) put their long years
of adulthood to good measure
as the guiding forces to their
three children. Born to surf
are the kids and none are more
enthusiastic to taking to the
waves than Bethany. Child star
Annasophia Robb (Because
of Winn Dixie) continues to
grow her screen presence as
the captivating Bethany. Along
with her best friend the girls
take to the waves like ducks to
waves.
Mother nature can be dangerous.
While many of us live in
sheltered homes one can’t help
but feel for disasters that come
without a warning’s notice.
When Bethany gets caught up
in an accident it appears that
her hopes of a decent future
are dashed. Permanent injury
can be a trying concept for any
victim to behold. The direction
of Soul Surfer takes an abrupt

Arts & Crafts in Fiji

With a rich history and culture, Fiji is a great
place to vacation in. What makes this group
of 300 plus islands so wonderful is the fact
that the people here are among the friendliest
on the planet. The customs here are unique
and the art, music and dance found on Fiji are
truly exceptional.
The pottery and woodcarving found here is
superb, with most potters and woodcarvers
using traditions handed down to them from
generation to generation. Even in Fijian
villages today, the same pottery styles
and carving techniques are used that were
practiced hundreds of years ago.
Two of Fiji’s best-known potters are Diana
Tugea of Nakabuta and Taraivini Wati of
Nasilai. While Diana is from the Sigatoka
Valley, Taraivini comes from the area around
Rewa. Diana’s pots are mostly the kind used
for cooking; where as Taraivini’s pots are
highly decorative and were traditionally used
to store water. On the island of Kadavu, the
village of Nalotu is famous for its traditional
pottery.
Woodcarvings are a popular tourist buy in
Fiji with the carvers here highly skilled.
From religious objects such as yaqona
vessels to war clubs, spears, tanoa drinking
bowls and cannibal forks, these craftsmen
still use age-old methods passed down to
them by their ancestors. If you are interested
in seeing some authentic traditional wooden
handicrafts, head down to the Fiji Museum
in Suva.
Masi or tapa is another popular craft made
by indigenous Fijians in which black and
rust colored designs are printed on bark cloth
(made from a mulberry bush). Associated
with rituals and celebrations, the masi was
used in ancient times as a loincloth. Today,
however, it is mostly sold in the form wall
hangings and decorative items. Mats and
basket weavings are also popular tourist items
in Fiji. Made from pandanus leaves, which
go through an extensive curing and boiling
process, these beautiful mats are made to
either sleep or dine on or cover floors.
Music and dance also play a key role in the
lives of the Fijian people. Island visitors
are often welcomed to their resorts and
hotels with a wonderful meke dance, which
enacts local folklore and old Polynesian
and Melanesian legends. Children, men and
women all participate in meke, with men
performing warrior dances with clubs and
spears, while the women dance with fans.

Kanishtha Dhankhar was crowned
Pantaloons Femina Miss India World
2011 at a gala event Thursday night at a
star-studded event at Mumbai’s Mehboob
Studio.
PFMI World Kanishtha Dhankhar and
PFMI International Ankita Shorey are both
from Maximum City. Delhi’s Hasleen Kaur
was crowned PFMI Earth. In answer to the
final question, ‘There is a lot that children
can learn from mothers but what can
mothers learn from children?’ Kanishtha
said, “Children can learn everything
from mothers and vice versa. We live in
contemporary India where we have a voice
and a choice. Mothers can learn to dream
from us, we can set an example for them.”
The PFMI 2011 winners were crowned
by PFMI World 2010 Manasvi Mamgai,
Miss Earth 2010 and PFMI Earth 2010
Nicole Faria and PFMI International 2010
Neha Hinge. Tarun Jha, head of marketing,
Skoda Auto India, handed the winners the
keys of the Skoda Fabia as their grand
prize.
The springtime colours of April came to
life as the 20 finalists walked the ramp in
the Ra’ gemstone collection designed by
Rajesh and Anirban. Hosts Manish Paul
and Sonu Sood welcomed the ladies whose
show of confidence likely concealed
some serious jitters. This was followed
by another spectacular show in white and
ivory georgette saris designed by RMKV.
Round three saw the girls walk the ramp in
scarlet evening gowns by Gaviin C Miguel.
As the girls sashayed on stage, one of them
lost her shoe, only to have judge Fardeen
Khan find it and slip it back on her foot.
The Cinderella moment drew spontaneous
applause.
The importance of India’s first and
foremost beauty pageant which is now in
its 47th year can hardly be underestimated,
and this was visible in the line-up of star
performers who took the stage through
the evening. Sonakshi Sinha performed to
a medley of songs, including Chura Liya
Hai Tumne — perhaps a tribute to former
Miss India Zeenat Aman. Punjabi rapper
Hard Kaur and a bunch of semi-acrobatic
dancers grooved to Laung Da Lashkara.
Malaika Arora Khan did her Munni
Badnam act, with Dabangg co-star Sonu
Sood egging her on. Anushka Sharma
danced to Haule Haule, while Sunidhi
Chauhan sang Heartbeat.
Amidst the bunch of 500-odd spectators, it
was a small cluster of seats facing the ladies
that occupied their attention. The army of
judges included Prachi Desai, Kangana
Ranaut, Fardeen Khan, Dino Morea Ritu
Kumar, Leander Paes, Tarun Mansukhani,
Sajid Nadiadwala and Shiamak Davar.
Nadiadwala declared Ankita Mohapatra
the winner of the Bollywood Diva title.
The lucky girl will be cast in a film under
the Nadiadwala Grandsons Entertainment
banner.
The crowns for the pageant were designed
by Forever Jewellery. The PFMI 2011
contestants underwent an intensive
30-day training session at Novotel,
Mumbai Juhu Beach. An accomplished
team of experts led these youngsters
through the task, namely diction expert
Sabira Merchant, cosmetologist and
dermatologist Dr Jamuna Pai, smile
care expert Dr Sandesh Mayekar, fitness
expert Yasmin Karachiwala, ramp walk
trainer Alesia Raut and creative director of
PFMI 2011, Marc Robinson. The official
photographer was Jitu Savlani while the
designer and stylist was Gaviin C Miguel.
Hair and make-up was taken care of by
experts Bharat and Dorris while image and
makeover was managed by stylist Queenie partner Zoom, destination partner Lavasa,

Avoid Being a Victim!
*Con artists may be men or women of any age
*Con artists may appear friendly and kind to
gain your confidence
*Con artists come on strong and want to
pressure you into sending money or buying
their product
*Con artists view older adults as easy targets
Prevention Tips
*Do not give out any personal information.
*Do not trust anyone you do not know.
*Do not purchase products or services from a
salesperson that arrives at your door uninvited.
*Before making a decision to undertake any
home repairs, discuss it with someone you trust
such as family members, neighbours or friends
contact the Better Business Bureau and check
references!
Be aware of the language and expressions con
artists use in their “pitches”: “I take cash only”
*Question why the transaction requires cash
only. A legitimate business person
would not refuse alternate forms of
payment.
“This is your last chance/today
only”
*Why is this offer so limited? If
the offer is that good, it will likely be available
tomorrow and the day after.
Something for Nothing
*Anytime you are offered something for
nothing, you usually get nothing.
Confidentiality
*Be suspicious of a deal that depends on not
telling anyone else. What is the reason for the
secrecy?
Internet Scams
*Strangers do not email out of the blue and ask
you to help them with found money or large
sums that need to be moved to Canada.
Get-Rich Quick Schemes
*Any “deal” should be looked into carefully.
Contests
*Beware of the “you have won” pitch.
Generally, the contests are fake and
are used to entice you to part with
your money.
Leftover Material
*Be extremely careful of the “just
passing by” home repairman. The
leftover material offered may be stolen or
defective.
Report any suspicious activities that you
believe may be a scam or fraud to the police.
Charities
*All legitimate charitable organizations are
registered with the government.
*Ask for their registration number and then call
the Canada Revenue Agency. Decide ahead of
time what charities you want to support.
*Be wary of telephone campaigns, find out how
much of the money actually goes to the charity.

Direct Deposit
* Have your regular cheques sent to your bank
via direct deposit so that your money goes
directly into your bank account. Criminals may
intercept cheques sent through the mail.
Credit Cards
*Immediately sign the reverse side of a credit
card when received. Destroy old cards by
cutting them into small pieces. Use caution
when providing your credit card number to
anyone over the phone or internet.
Bank / Debit/Interac Cards
*A debit card replaces the need to carry cash
for purchases. Ask at your bank for more
information.
Automated Teller
*When using these machines, be aware of who
is around you. Do not make it obvious you are
taking out cash.
Safety Deposit box
*Store stocks, bonds, jewellery, important
papers and other valuables in a safety deposit
box. Do not carry large sums of cash or hide a

meats, vegetable protein, low-fat dairy
products and moderate amounts of high-
quality fats. Advances in glucose-control
medications and new knowledge about
glucose control and diet have made eating
with diabetes much easier than in our
grandparents’ time.
And today, healthy living for those with
diabetes is not just about controlling blood
sugar levels and warding off eye, foot and
kidney damage. It’s at least as important
to prevent cardiovascular disease by also
controlling blood pressure and blood
lipids, particularly artery clogging LDL
cholesterol.
Q:Have dietary recommendations for
people with diabetes changed?
A:Type 2 diabetes has really increased in
prevalence, so there’s a greater awareness
around diet and more messaging about
it. But the recommendations are the
same as 20 years ago. If you look at the
food available now, there’s obviously
a lot more functional type foods — for
example, yogourt that has fibre added.
So our recommendations have to take
account of this change since people are
eating more of these foods as opposed to
preparing their own foods from scratch.
Still, the recommendations in terms of the
nutrients and food groups that you need
have stayed the same.
Q:How do fats contribute to, or worsen,
diabetes?
A:There are two ways in which fats play
into this equation. First, people with
diabetes are two to three times more
likely to develop heart disease than those
without. So preventing heart disease is
a really big goal. They should restrict
their saturated fat intake — from animal
products such as fatty meat, cream, butter,
eggs, cheese — and keep saturated fat at
a bare minimum, say, 7% of their total
energy intake. And if they can eliminate
trans fats — which is fairly easy to do
now that food manu facturers have, for
the most part, stopped using them — then
that can certainly reduce heart disease
risk.
The other way that fats play a role is that
they’re very energy dense. Compared
with equal amounts of carbohydrates
or protein, fats have more than twice as
many calories. Protein and carbs have
four calories per gram, while fat has
nine calories per gram. For someone
trying to watch his or her weight — as
a person with type 2 diabetes should be
— lowering overall fat intake helps lower

weight down. As long as calories are low
enough to help maintain a healthy weight,
including healthy fats as up to 35% of
your total calories is fine.
Q:How problematic are refined sugar
products such as desserts?
A:When you’re eating sugar without
fibre, you’re getting more calories but
fewer overall nutrients. The result is peaks
and valleys in your blood sugar levels.
For a body that has trouble regulating
blood glucose levels as it is, adding the
extra stress of lots of sugar is certainly
going to wreak havoc. It doesn’t mean
that diabetics can never have sweets, but
they have to be the exception — not the
norm. You can’t have a soda pop and a
chocolate bar every day as your afternoon
snack. Better options are whole fruit with
plain yogourt, fruit with nuts, vegetables
and hummus. Eighty per cent of the time,
the foods that you’re choosing should be
the ones that give you the greatest amount
of nutrients that your body needs; only
20% of the time should you have foods
that you’re eating just for taste.
Diabetes
Diabetes is a metabolic disorder in which
the body is unable to properly store and
use fuel for energy. The body’s main
fuel is a form of sugar called glucose,
which comes from food (after it’s been
broken down). It is stored in muscle and
liver cells. Glucose enters the blood and
is used by cells for energy. To store and
use glucose, the pancreas produces the
hormone insulin. Diabetes develops when
the body can’t produce enough insulin or
can’t properly use the insulin it makes.
About 90% of diabetes cases are type
2 diabetes, formerly called adult-onset
diabetes since it most often occurs in
middle age.
Type 1 diabetes (sometimes called
juvenile diabetes) is an autoimmune
disease in which the immune system
attacks and destroys the insulin-producing
beta cells of the pancreas.
Type 2 is generally related to an inactive
lifestyle, poor diet, family history and
genetics. The exact cause is unknown,
but it most often strikes people who are
over 40 years of age, are overweight,
have a family history of the disorder, have
high blood pressure or high cholesterol,
or developed gestational diabetes while
pregnant. Members of certain ethnic
groups are also at greater risk, including
South Asians, Hispanics, Aboriginals and
those of African descent.
Q:How do fruits compare with juices?
A:Fruit has sugar in the form of fructose.
But because there’s a lot of fibre in
the fruit, that sugar is released into the
bloodstream very slowly, so it doesn’t
cause glucose peaks and valleys. With
juices, however, we peel off the outer skin
of the fruit (where most of the nutrients
are); we may add sugar and we strain out
every bit of pulp or fibre. What you’re
left with is something that barely reflects
the nutrient profile of that fruit. For most
adults, there’s no need to have juice in
their diets.
Q:How about alcohol?
A:Alcohol can be an issue for those
with diabetes as it can interfere with
glucose metabolism, resulting in delayed
hypoglycemia, or low blood sugar. While
the liver is busy processing the alcohol,
it is not processing food. Generally,
diabetics who have well-controlled blood
sugar could still drink in moderation
(one to two drinks per day), but this is
something that they should discuss with
their health-care provider or registered
dietitian.
Q:What about sodium?
A:Excess sodium can raise blood pressure
and increase the risk of stroke and heart
disease. In most people’s diets, 80% of
the sodium comes from processed foods.
What you want on your plate are products
that are as close as possible to how they
would have been found in nature or on
the farm. If you’re eating meat, you want
the actual fresh cuts of meat, not meats
that have been processed with a lot of
additives and fillers such as hot dogs or
processed burgers. If you cut back on
processed foods, you not only lower your
sodium intake, you’re also cutting back
on foods that are high in fat and sugar and
low in fibre. So you’re killing three birds.
Q:Should those with diabetes memorize
the Glycemic Index?
A:The Glycemic Index is a measure
of how quickly and how high different
carbohydrate foods will raise your
blood glucose levels. Without actually
memorizing that list of foods, it’s good
to follow the principle behind it: choose
food that is low in added sugar and high in
fibre, rather than food that is high in sugar
and low in fibre. If people are choosing
lots of fruits and vegetables, lots of whole
grains and moderate amounts of lean
proteins and low-fat dairy products, they

same kind of diet as diabetics?
A:It’s the diet that everyone should be
following, not only to treat an existing
medical condition but also to prevent
any of the other diseases of lifestyle
— obesity, heart disease, high blood
pressure, high cholesterol — that plague
Canadians.
Eating Tips
•Eat three meals per day at regular times
and space meals no more than six hours
apart. You may benefit from healthy
snacks in between. Eating at regular
times helps your body control blood
glucose levels.
•Limit sweets such as sugar, regular pop,
desserts, candies, jam and honey. The
more sugar you eat, the higher your blood
glucose will be. Artificial sweeteners can
be useful.
•Limit the amount of high-fat food you
eat such as fatty meats, cheese, fried
foods, chips and pastries. High-fat foods
may cause you to gain weight. A healthy
weight helps with blood glucose control
and is healthier for your heart. Make
lower-fat choices (skim milk, extra-lean
ground beef, fish) and use small amounts
of added fats such as bread spreads,
cooking oil and salad dressings.
•Eat more high-fibre foods (whole-grain
breads and cereals; legumes such as
lentils, dried beans and peas; brown rice;
barley; vegetables and fruits). Foods
high in fibre may help you feel full and
may lower blood glucose and cholesterol
levels.
•If you are thirsty, drink water. Quenching
your thirst with sugary pop or fruit juice
will raise your blood glucose.
•Choose healthy snacks: a small piece of
fruit or a few whole wheat crackers with
peanut butter.
•Add physical activity to your life.

your blood glucose control.

emergency
PASSENGERS on a Qantas flight that
made an emergency landing at Sydney
Airport Wednesday morning say crew
didn’t tell them a thing until they were on
the ground.
NSW Fire and Ambulance crews rushed
to meet the Boeing 737, flight QF50 from
Auckland, which landed safely about 7.45am
(AEST).
Australia Zoo welcomes baby
white rhino
AUSTRALIA Zoo has a cute new
addition to its family - a baby white
rhino.
The as-yet-unnamed calf was born at
3.15am on Tuesday, weighing around
60kg and is still a little wobbly.
Zoo spokeswoman Manu Ludden said
the female calf was doing well and had
already started feeding from proud mum,
Caballe.
“Our little rhino calf was on the move
immediately after being born and she
has already had at least three good long
feeds,” Ms Ludden said.
“Mum is also doing well. She is super
relaxed and she seems quite content.”
This is Caballe’s fourth calf and is the first
rhino born at Australia Zoo.
The calf will not be on display until
September to give her and her mum time
to grow and bond.

safely and without incident at Sydney
Airport after requesting priority landing.”
A Qantas spokesman said the 138
passengers on board disembarked safely
and said reports of engine troubles or fuel

told about the emergency landing.
“We didn’t get told that, we should get told,
especially with a full plane, you don’t expect

“He did hit down very hard though ... and

flight. “I saw a fire engine parked when we

Caballe, a southern white rhinoceros, was
brought from Hamilton Zoo in Auckland,
New Zealand, last year.
One of Africa’s “big five” animals, wild
white rhino numbers are estimated at
20,150, with a further 780 in captivity.
“White rhinos are doing the best of all
the rhino species, numbering more than
all the other species put together,” Ms
Ludden said.
“This hasn’t always been the case though,
with numbers dropping to less than 100
individuals at the turn of the century, so
they are a great success story.
“Poaching remains the rhinos’ biggest
threat but through intense anti-poaching
strategies, numbers have climbed.
However they are still highly at risk.”
The white rhino is close to being listed
as threatened but compares well with
Queensland’s northern hairy nosed
wombat of which only about 140 survive.
The far more endangered wombats also
are celebrating a birth in the wild, with
a population set up by Environment
Department scientists near St George in
southern Queensland just having recorded
its first birth.

name the rhino via auction website eBay.

Narayan walks free
A WOMAN who burned her husband to
death after “snapping momentarily” has
become the third battered wife in seven
years to avoid jail for manslaughter.
The Supreme Court suspended Rajini
Narayan’s six-year sentence for killing
her cheating husband, Satish, in December
2008.
Justice John Sulan said the killing was
due to “momentary” anger and “muddled”
thinking, and that Narayan was truly
remorseful for her actions.
“Although it is often said ... that a
suspended sentence is not a sentence at all,
it’s a real sentence and can be brought into
effect if there is a failure to comply with
specified conditions,” he said.
“It is wrong to regard suspended sentences
as letting an offender walk free as if he or
she has not been punished.
“It seems (Narayan) has suffered a great
deal already.”
Narayan, who sat with her back to the
public gallery for much of the hearing,
fought back tears as the sentence was
announced.
Her eldest daughter ran to the front of the
court room to embrace and kiss her mother.
Narayan, 46, is the third woman in seven
years to avoid an immediate jail term for
manslaughter.
In 2004, Riverland woman Gwenda Elaine
Savcic received a suspended three-year
term for killing her husband, Mark.
Savcic fatally stabbed her husband with a
samurai sword after silently enduring 19
years of abuse at his hands.
Justice Ted Mullighan ruled the stabbing -
the first time Savcic had ever stood up to
her husband - was an act of “excessive self-
defence”.
In 2009, Noreen Jessamine Weetra received
a suspended five-year term for killing her
partner, Ross Owen Calyun.
Man drink driving with kids in car
A MAN has been charged with drink
driving while he had two young children
in his car in Sydney’s southwest.
Police were conducting random breath
testing at Badgally Road, Claymore, when
they stopped a Holden Astra.
The car was driven into the breath testing
site before allegedly crashing into the
cement gutter.
Police spoke with the driver and noticed
two young girls, aged two and three, in
the back seat.
It will be alleged an open bottle of alcohol
was found in the car.

“rare and exceptional”, and therefore

Narayan stood trial in the Supreme Court
for murder last year.
Prosecutors had alleged she deliberately
set her husband, Satish, alight in December
2008 after confronting him about his affair.
Narayan denied this, saying her intention
was to “circumcise and purify” her
husband who had physically and verbally
abused her for 22 years.
She said she wanted to “burn a dot on his
penis” with petrol and an “angel candle”
she had been given by a fortune teller so
that he would not leave her for the other
woman.
“It would be like circumcision, or just like
he placed that red dot on my forehead at
the wedding,” she said at trial.
“It was like I had all the powers of the
goddess to save my husband, my lord ... it
did not occur to me that it was going to be
dangerous.”
Narayan admitted losing control and
throwing the flame and accelerant onto
Satish when he called her a “fat bitch”.
Jurors accepted her version of events,
acquitting her of murder and finding her
guilty of the lesser charge of manslaughter.
In sentencing, Justice Sulan said Narayan
had “deified” her husband and was
“shattered” by his betrayal.
He said there was “no doubt” her thinking
at the time was “unrealistic, muddled and
illogical”.
“For the first time in your life you had
confronted your husband, had found the
courage to be assertive to the person who
had mistreated you for 20 years,” he said.
“His response was to treat you with disdain,
dismiss you and turn his back to you (and)
you snapped.”
Justice Sulan further ordered Narayan be
under Correctional Services supervision
for two years, and undertake psychological
counseling as ordered.
