Photo/Graphic Edges™ Operations Manual
When using the application version of Photo/Graphic Edges you should adjust the memory settings as
high as possible. When using the plug-in version of Photo/Graphic Edges you should lower the amount of
memory your host application (Adobe Photoshop, for example) is using. This frees up more memory for
Photo/Graphic Edges. Photo/Graphic Edges uses free RAM that is not being used by any other program.
Freeing Up Memory
Here are some ways you can free up memory on the Mac
Once the About This Computer window appears you can see how much
RAM each program is using. You can also see how much free RAM there
is by looking at the Largest Unused Block. In the example above there is
127.1 MB of free RAM available.
Later versions of the Mac OS allow you to double click on the application
name shown in the About This Computer Windows. This will open up the
Info window for the application and will let you adjust the memory. Earlier
versions require you to go to the finder and locate the application then
press Command I to open the Info window to set the memory parameters.
Unless you are working with very large images you can keep Photoshop’s
Preferred Size memory to a setting that leaves a lot of Free Ram for other
applications such as Photo/Graphic Edges.

• The application version allows you to open files while the plug-in version does not as it relies
on the host application to provide the image information
Unlike other plug-ins on the market, Auto FX plug-ins allow you to save your file to disk while still in the
plug-in itself. Most other plug-ins force you to apply back into the host application before you can save your
results. We feel that as you evolve your work you should be able to save copies to disk at anytime and
continue with your work without having to reload the plug-in or relaunch the application again.

process to complete before making changes.
Proxy
You must quit and then restart this software before the Proxy changes take place. The proxy option defines the
maximum preview size that the software renders to while working with your graphics. The preview displays how the
final high-resolution version will look once you have saved the file or applied back into a host appliation like
Photoshop. The proxy system was designed to vastly speed up complex operations that this software uses to render
photo-realistic high-quality graphics. Warning: Disabling or increasing the size of the Proxy display settings will slow
the render speed.
AutoUpdate
This control enables or disables the AutoUpdate feature in this program. The AutoUpdate feature checks the Auto FX
server for new updates of the program and if any are available it downloads these as they become available.

Using Photoshop Actions to Automate
Photo/Graphic Edges Effects
One of the most powerful features of Adobe Photoshop is the ability to record and replay a series of steps while you work in
Record your favorite Photo/Graphic Edges effects Photoshop. By recording these steps you are able to produce powerful effects that can be reproduced again and again with minimal
as Photoshop Actions and replay them anytime input during playback. Actions allow you to combine different filters, movement of layers, changes to selections and more.
Photo/Graphic Edges is actions aware and works with Photoshop 4 and higher actions. You can create a new action using the
Photoshop actions palette and then go into Photo/Graphic Edges and apply your settings and they will be recorded as part of the
action for playback at a later time.
If you are working in a production oriented environment and you need to do batch processing, the support Photo/Graphic Edges has
for actions can be of great benefit. To learn more about using actions, please refer to your Photoshop user manual or visit the Auto FX
website.
The Adobe Photoshop last filter command
lets you reapply the Photo/Graphic Edges Last Filter Command
effect again on other images or layers
Photo/Graphic Edges supports the PhotoShop Last Filter command functionality. This means that you can apply an effect using
Photo/Graphic Edges and then open another image and go to the Filter menu and at the top of the menu select Photo/Graphic Edges
(Windows: Control F / Mac: Command F). This will reapply the last effect to the new image. Certain effects that are size dependant will
vary if the image you have reapplied the effect to is different from the initial image. Results may vary due to the way the effects are
written.
Using Presets
Presets Take Snapshots of Your Work
As you explore with different looks and styles you can save copies of your work to disk or you can save
snapshots of the effect settings as a Preset that can be applied to other projects at a later time. Presets are
a great way for you to store your favorite settings or temporarily record something you like so you can go
back to that point whenever you want. Presets take up virtually no memory so don’t worry about using up
valuable disk space. You can save an unlimited number of presets in Photo/Graphic Edges.
Creating a preset is easy. Once you have an effect setting that you Presets are selected from the effect menu. As you roll your cursor over the

All Photo/Graphic Edges presets have the .iqp and matching .thm file extension. When sharing presets,
make sure to include both the .iqp and the matching .thm file for the preset.
Photo/Graphic Edges features a visual preset catalog that allows you to see
small thumbnails of the presets you have saved. Presets are displayed

worry whether the preset will work with your version of Photo/Graphic Edges. If the preset was created with
a more advanced version you will get a result based on what features your version is capable of supporting.
In most cases this means that if you find a preset that is older it will be 100% feature compliant. It also
means that if you are working on an older version of Photo/Graphic Edges you will be able to load in
presets created by users that are working in newer versions, although not all features will be available to
you. All Photo/Graphic Edges presets are cross-platform so you can share your presets between Mac and
Windows.

Layer Presets
Layer Presets Capture and Replay All Layers
There are two different types of presets in this program. Effect Presets and Layer Presets. Effect presets
capture and replay a single effect. Layer presets work much in the same way except they capture entire
sets of layers and dynamically render them onto the currently open file. A layer preset can recreate
complex visual effects allowing you to save time and reapply creative solutions to different images.

Using the Zoom Tool
Zoom Tool The zoom tool enables you to see your effect work close up. The zoom tool supports two
types of zooming. The first type of zooming is the basic type. Click over the area of the image

The second type of zooming involves dragging the zoom cursor over the preview to create a
marquee area. Whatever is inside this marquee when the mouse button is released will be
shown in the preview window. This type of zooming is the most efficient as it places exactly
the area of interest in the preview window.

Photo Tabs
How to Add Transparency to Photo Tabs
Photo Tabs can be semi-transparent. It is a simple matter of reducing the opacity of the
color and surface qualities of the effect. If you are just using color to fill the photo tab
you can reduce the Tab Color slider from 100% to a lower setting and the photo
beneath the photo tab is shown through the tab.
If you are using Reflection Maps and Environment Maps you will need to reduce the
opacity settings for these using their respective controls so that the photo tab is semi-
transparent.
Use the Clone Effect tool to make a copy of the effect so you can build collages of photos in a
single document. After you have cloned the effect you can change the settings for each clone to
make it unique. Photo Tabs offers you an infinite number of depth, surface and texture shapes
that can be applied to the tab combinations you create.

9 Texture Map
The Texture Map menu allows you to select from a variety of surfaces for your effect.
Texture Maps change the height of the surface with a texture or bump. This alters the
direction of light reflected by Sheen and Reflective, and the light bent by Refractive.
You may load a custom map by choosing "Custom Map" from the menu. Use the
arrows at the top and bottom of the menu to scroll through the pre-installed maps.
If you decide you no longer want the surface map, select the "None" option from the
menu.
10 Texture Strength
The Texture Strength slider adjusts the amount of surface texture and height you want
to apply to the effect. Positive slider settings raise the surface texture up while negative
setting press the surface texture into the artwork.
11 Imprint Size
The Texture Imprint Size slider adjusts the size of the surface texture map without
adjusting the height. Higher settings increase the size of the texture map while lower
settings reduce it.

The Texture Map Orientation menu allows you to rotate the texture map direction in
specified directional increments. You may also flip the orientation horizontally or vertically.

Applying Background
Textures and Colors
Using the Surface Controls
In the following steps we will show you how to apply the surface controls to the background
behind your effect. In these examples we will use the Edge Effect.
Step 1
Click on the Surface Tab to see the surface controls. Then click on the Fill
With menu to select Color as the option.
Step 3
Load up a photo into PGE and select the Edge effect from the Photo/Graphic
menu. This is how the image looks after we apply an edge to it.
Now that the Fill With: Color option is selected the Fill Color control is active.
Click on the Fill Color color box to access the color picker. Select the desired
color using the Color picker.

Light Tiles
Set the Mood in Your Effect
Light Tiles allow you to load up shading masks that can be applied to either the background or the contents of the effect
(such as the photo inside an edge). You may have a different Light Tile applied for both the background and the effect.
1 Target Menu
The Target Menu allows you to define where you want the
light tile to be applied to. You may select Background or apply
the tile to another aspect of the effect (Edge Effect / Vignette /
1 Image in Frames).
2
2 Light Tile Menu
The Light Tile Menu allows you to load up a light tile from the
Open Dialog. You may also decide not to use a light tile and if
3 so, you may remove it by selecting None from this menu.

The light tile will apply a shading mask to the image that may be
5 too dark for your needs. If it is too dark, adjust this control to
reduce the opacity of the light tile as it is applied to your effect.
The result is a lighter, less noticeable application of the tile.
4 Softness
The Softness slider softens the light tile to smooth it out
as it is applied. In some cases, depending on the tile selected
and settings of the softness control, the results can be very
noticeable. In most cases, however, the result of using the
softness control are subtle. Light Tiles enable you to add depth and shading to your images
and effects. They can be applied to either the background or the
5 Light Tile Orientation Menu foreground effect or in some cases to both.
The Light Tile Orientation menu allows you to rotate the light
tile in specified directional increments. You may also flip the
orientation horizontally or vertically. A useful technique to learn
is to apply the same light tile to the background as you apply
to the effect but with different orientations and opacity settings.
This allows the shading to remain similar yet from a different
orientation and opacity (strength).

Applying Light Tiles
Using the Light Tile Controls
In the following steps we will show you how to apply the light tiles to your effect. In these
examples we will use the Edge Effect. The Vignette, Montage and Frames work in a similar
fashion but with some slight variations on targeting and other options that you will see when
you are working with each of these effects.
Step 1
Click on the Surface Tab and the controls for the Surface tab will then be
shown. Use the Fill With menu to fill the background with a texture. In this
case we selected a texture that closely matches the texture of the image
inside the edge.

Lighting Controls
About Photo/Graphic Edges Lighting Controls
Each effect in the Photo/Graphic Edges Series uses the lighting controls to generate shading and shadows. Shading is
seen when surface maps or curl shading controls are used. Shading works by casting light across the surface of your
artwork. Depth applied with the surface maps or curl shading are applied using the Light Points and controls.
Photo/Graphic Edges’s Lighting controls allow you to:
• Create lights and set their relative height, strength and color
• Adjust the ambient light that surrounds the effect
• Independently control multiple lights points
• Automatically or manually adjust shadows created by lights
1 • Create multiple shadows that are linked to lighting adjustments
3 • Independently control shadow color, opacity and softness

Step 2
Applying Shadows
Using the Shadow Controls
By default the shadows for effects are turned off. Turning them on is very easy to do.
Step 1
In this example we have created an edge effect around the image. We go to the Lighting Tab
and see that by default, the Display Shadows option is not turned on. Before PGE will display
a shadow beneath your effect, you must check on the Display Shadows option.
Use the controls on the Lighting Tab to change the height, softness, color and opacity of the
shadows that appear beneath the effect.
Now that the box is checked on we can see a shadow beneath the edge.
