1.0 Introduction

Open source software is software that is free to use and which provides the original source
code used to create it so that users can modify. Hardware isÊthe physical aspect of computer,
telecommunications, and other device. Software is a general term for the various kinds of
programs used to operate computers and related devices.

2.0 The Latest Open Source Operating System (OS)

2.1 Meaning of open source software OS

Meaning of Open source (OS) is an operating system (OS) is a set of programs containing
instructions that coordinate all the activities among computer hardware devices.

2.2 Examples of open source software OS

Example of open source software OS is Linux. The latest stable release in Kernel 2.6.29.4 on
20 May 2009. Another example of latest unstable release in Kernel 2.6.30-rc7 on 23 May
2009.ÊLinux 2.6.30-rc7 kernel brings a late driver to the kernel for the Cisco PCI-Express FCoE
HBA SCSI adapter and besides that the rest of the fixes are small changes.

Another example of open source software OS is GNOME Latest version GNOME 2.32,
September 2010, Addition of Rygel and GNOME Color Manager. Improvements to Empathy Im
client, Evince, Nautilus file manager and others. 3.0 was intended to be released in September
2010, so a large part of the development effort since 2.30 went towards 3.0.
3.0 The Latest Open Source Application Software

3.1 Meaning of open source application software

Open source application software is consist of programs that perform specific tasks for
users. Popular application software , spreadsheet software , database software and presentation
graphics software .

3.2ÊExamples of open source application software

Examples of open source application software is Mozilla Firefox. Latest versionÊMozilla
Firefox in version 3.0.10, release on 27 April 2009. These versions will be smaller incremental
updates. The aim is to get new functions to users faster.
Another examples of open source applications is Open LDAP. Latest version is
OpenLDAP Version 2.4, released in October, 2007, introduced N-way MultiMaster replication,
Stand-by master, and the ability to delete and modify Schema elements on the fly, plus many
more.
4.0 The Latest Development in ICT

4.1 Hardware

The latest development in ICT in hardware is Wireless Keyboard 3000. Wireless Keyboard
300 have 2.4 GHz wireless technology which confident connection out of the box and with up to
a 45-foot range. Beside that, it also have quiet-touch keys which quiet, responsive, and thin-
profile keys. It is available with soft-touch palm rest which has some benefits like we will get
better comfortable which support when we type with the plush, integrated palm rest. It¶s spill-
resistant design is integrated water channels drain the liquid away. It also has media center which
can control media playback from our keyboard. Some hot key that it have are one-touch access
to Windows Media Player, e-mail, Home, calculator, My Documents, zoom instant massaging
and photos.

Compare with Wired Desktop 600, this keyboard have media center with four hot keys to
let we control the most-used media activities like play house, volume up, volume down, and
mute. Beside that, it also have calculator hot keys which has a function to quickly access the
calculator if we touch it¶s button. It¶s spill-resistant design is use to enjoy a drink while we
work. This keyboard is designed to withstand an accidental spill. We can press to launch our
Start menu and search our PC or the Web if we have Windows Vista installed.

4.2 Software

The latest development in ICT in software is GNOME 2.26.The latest version of the
GNOME Desktop, a popular, multi-platform desktop environment for your computer. GNOME
focus is easy to use, stability, and first class internasionalisation and accessibility support.
GNOME is free and open source software and provides all of the common tools computer users
expect of a modern computing environment, such as e-mail, groupware, web browsing, file
management, multimedia, and games. Furthermore, GNOME provides a flexible and powerful
platform for software developers, both on the desktop and in mobile application. The GNOME
desktop is released every six month and contains many new features, improvement, bug fixes,
and translations. GNOME 2.26 continues this tradition. GNOME 2.26 includes all of the
improvements made in GNOME 2.24 and earlier.
5.0 Pervasive Computing

5.1 Meaning of pervasive computing

Pervasive computing is the trend towards an information environment in which users have
access to this trend is particularly associated with the growth of wireless technologies that allow
users to access online information and services remotely and synchronies data between different
computers.

5.2 Examples of pervasive computing

The examples of pervasive computing is wireless, Bluetooth and infrared . Wireless is an

old-fashioned term for a radio transceiver (a mixed receiver and transmitter device), referring to
its use in wireless telegraphy early on, or for a radio receiver.

Bluetooth is an industrial specification for wireless personal area networks

(PANs).Bluetooth lets these devices communicate with each other when they are in range.

Infrared (IR) radiation is electromagnetic radiation of a wave length longer than that of
visible light, but shorter than that of radiowaves.
6.0 Conclusion

Open source software has natural strengths which benefit individual users. Above and
beyond this, the widespread use of open source software holds advantages for the U.S. economy
as a whole, and it is for this reason that a careful program of government promotion and
encouragement would be justified and beneficial.

The aim of the research presented in this thesis is to contribute to the design of CSdCL
environments of good pedagogical quality. This is approached by exploration of the research
question: What are the most crucial limitations and possibilities of Internet related to performing
collaborative activities in distributed learning situations? The research question is primarily
illuminated through the process of developing a prototype of a CSdCL computer system and the
application of this in a CSdCL situation. This development is founded on literature studies and
initial studies at two distance education institutions.
