COMMUNITY-BASED

PRODUCTION SYSTEM FOR

SELECTED TREE AND VINES IN
SUPPORT OF THE FURNITURE
AND HANDICRAFT INDUSTRIES
Objectives
– General: In general, this project aims to develop
community-based production models for tree and
vine/climber species in support of the furniture
and handicraft industries.
– Specific:
• Document and/or improve current and indigenous
propagation, maintenance and harvesting practices for
the selected species.
• Improve and increase current raw material sources
through introduction of alternative species and
innovation of existing silvicultural practices.
• Develop economically-feasible, environmentally-friendly
and socially-acceptable schemes of forest production
and management.

• Silong Pugo – Pericampylus glaucus
(Lam.),

Planting Stock
Production
• Use of sterilized soil
to prevent soil-borne
diseases - used soils
from charcoal pits
• Learned about seed
dormancy and
designed their own
version of “warm

Community-

Community-

How did the PO-researcher
partnership worked?
• Project introduction
• Participatory
planning, monitoring
and evaluation
• Incentives for project
implementation
• Cross-farm and
institution visits
• Planning for
sustainability
Lessons Learned

• Basic tree farming knowledge of People’s Organizations can

be enhanced thru training and actual farm-trials
• POs interested in field trials and experimentation to enhance
their current knowledge and skills and improve current raw
materials production
• POs have developed systems for planning, decision-making;
project implementation; M & E; feedback (researchers
capitalized on this)
• POs lack capital; partnership linked them to capital (e.g.
project development)
• Dynamic/dedicated leadership vital to project implementation
(risk: changing leaders)
• Forest restoration is best done using indigenous tree & even
vine/NTFP species
Lessons Learned
• Sustaining the Community plantings
– Participatory planning, monitoring and evaluation
is of paramount importance
– Benefit-sharing mechanism should be set in
place.
– Project Development for sustained financing (e.g.
agroforestry, small-scale furniture projects);
– Skills development, e.g. product processing for
value adding
– Remove institutional obstacles that bars the PO
from harvesting and selling the trees they planted
Expanding/Replicating
Community-based Plantations
• Embed in Forest Landscape Restoration
approach
• Links to markets/processing plants
• Promote diversity of products/services
• Adaptive management
• Advocate for farmer-friendly policies
• Strengthen indigenous knowledge/science
interface
