Mr Blakester said community wind farms were fairly new to Australia but there were
hundreds overseas, particularly in North America and Western Europe.
Hepburn Wind was Australia’s first community wind farm, with two turbines
producing all of the electricity used by Daylesford in Victoria.

The New England has been designated as a priority region for the development of Vodafone 3 Months FREE

Currently more than 90 per cent of NSW electricity is produced from coal. Mr
Blakester said new sources of electricity were required to meet future needs.

“With just four to six wind turbines we could produce enough electricity for 10,000
people, or 20 per cent of the homes in the New England Tablelands,” Mr Blakester Deals powered by WhistleOut

“This would require $25 to $30 million invested and provide energy, financial and
community returns for 25 years and more.”
He said there was a real opportunity and potential for the New England to build
NSW's first community wind farm and build on the massive take up of solar power.

The key phrase is "could produce enough electricity", etc. This is only at optimum
conditions. Too little wind produces negligible power and in high winds the
blades must be stopped and feathered. A wind farm near Canberra was recently
dismantled due to bird strikes and complaints of noise. Australia's per capita
emissions of co2 would decline to a medium proportion with just one nuclear
power station built.
