LAS 3.

All teachers should give constructive instruction and feedback to students in both
written and oral contexts while being aware of diverse learners’ needs. Teachers
should effectively provide a variety of instructional strategies, constructive feedback,
criticism, and improvement strategies.

1. Write a paragraph explaining your knowledge and understanding of the standard—put the

standard into your own words.

The standard wants me to understand that in a classroom of diverse learners, there will need to be

different kinds of feedback, assessments, and criticisms catered to those students. I need to

model clear reading, speaking, and writing because students are going to be modeling after my

strategies, techniques, and resourcefulness. Additionally, I need to analyze curricular material in

order to make it both available and challenging to students.

2. Explain how the artifact you chose demonstrates your understanding and application of the

standard.

The artifact I chose, which is a series of small group reading lesson plans that were implemented

in my student teaching in my fall semester, demonstrate my ability “to use diverse instructional

strategies and assessments that include an appropriate balance of lecture, discussion, activity, and

written and oral work.” The lesson plans, which are two days of small group reading instruction

for a variety of reading, writing, and speaking levels, and prior to my takeover, I needed to

“analyze content materials to determine appropriate strategies and techniques to create successful

learning through reading, writing, speaking, and listening.” The materials and resources that I

selected were closely evaluated and I was trying to support the students in the most successful

ways possible. Through instruction, assessment, and feedback, I was able to increase students’

confidence, success, and understanding.

3. A If the artifact has been used in your practice, reflect on how your teaching will change in

the future to further meet the standard.

B. If the artifact has not been used in your practice, i.e., a class assignment, reflect upon how

your teaching will be impacted by the assignment.

These lesson plans were used in my instruction, and I believe that they definitely helped me to

see the important of truly differentiating instruction, especially reading instruction. In my current

student teaching placement, there aren’t as many groups, granted the number of students is very

different, however the idea is still in place. The school I am getting my student teaching

experience really helps me to see the value in differentiation through their intensive use of RTI.

The entire instructional day is very intertwined in RTI’s triangle complex. Having the extensive

exposure to interventions and their effectiveness will help me to meet this standard in the future.

4. Conclude with a paragraph discussing how you are more prepared to Teach and Learn in a

Diverse Society as a result of satisfactorily meeting the standard.

As mentioned above, through the practice and implementation of differentiation I am definitely

more prepared to teach and learn in a diverse society. Through assessment, students can be

instructed in groups, as well as whole group instruction, with the tools and manipulatives

necessary to ensure that all students are given the same opportunities. I believe that through

successfully meeting this standard, I have demonstrated my knowledge of instructing and

supporting based on a classroom of diverse learners.
