1. You are provided with a sample of a salt, A.

A contains one cation and one anion. Carry out the following tests and record your
observations and inferences in the spaces provided.

(a) Carry out a flame test on about half of the sample of A. In the inference column
identify the cation in A.

Observation Inference

(2)

(b) Dissolve the remainder of sample A in about 10 cm3 of distilled water in a boiling
tube. Use this solution for the tests which follow.

(i) To 2 cm3 of the solution of A in a test tube, add 6 drops of dilute nitric acid
followed by 6 drops of aqueous silver nitrate. Then add about 12 drops of
concentrated aqueous ammonia, gently shaking the tube as you do so.

2. You are provided with

• Solution B, aqueous sodium hydroxide, NaOH.

• Solution C, aqueous ethanedioic acid, which has been prepared by dissolving 4.50 g
of solid ethanedioic acid, (COOH)2, in distilled water and making the solution up to
1.00 dm3.
• Phenolphthalein indicator.

You are required to titrate portions of aqueous ethanedioic acid, solution C, with
aqueous sodium hydroxide, solution B.

(COOH)2(aq) + 2NaOH(aq) → (COONa)2(aq) + 2H2O(l)

(a) Procedure

1. Rinse out the burette with a small volume of solution B and then fill the burette
with solution B.
2. Rinse out the pipette with a small volume of solution C. Transfer 25.0 cm3 of
solution C to a conical flask. Add four drops of phenolphthalein indicator to the
solution in the conical flask.
3. Titrate solution C with solution B until the end-point is reached.
4. Record your burette readings and titre in Table 1.
5. Repeat the procedure until you obtain two titres that differ by no more than
0.20 cm3. Record all your burette readings and titres in Table 1.

3. You are provided with

• A stoppered tube containing powdered zinc.

• Aqueous copper(II) sulphate, CuSO4, concentration 0.50 mol dm–3, labelled D.

You are required to measure the temperature change when excess zinc reacts with
copper(II) sulphate solution.

Zn(s) + CuSO4(aq) → Cu(s) + ZnSO4(aq)

(a) Procedure

1. Use a measuring cylinder to transfer 50 cm3 of solution D to a dry polystyrene

cup firmly held in a 250 cm3 beaker. Place the thermometer in the solution in the
polystyrene cup.
2. Read the temperature of the solution and record it, to the nearest degree, in
Table 2.
3. Continue to record the temperature of the solution at half-minute intervals.
4. At exactly 3.0 minutes, add the zinc powder to the polystyrene cup, stirring with
the thermometer as you do so.
5. While continuing to stir with the thermometer, record the temperature of the
solution in the polystyrene cup every half minute from 3.5 to 8.0 minutes.
Record all the temperatures, to the nearest degree, in Table 2.

4. Zinc reacts with copper(II) sulphate solution.

Zn(s) + CuSO4(aq) → Cu(s) + ZnSO4(aq)

When excess zinc is used, the solid residue is a mixture of copper and unreacted zinc.

Zinc reacts with dilute sulphuric acid.

Zn(s) + H2SO4(aq) → ZnSO4(aq) + H2(g)

Copper does not react with dilute sulphuric acid.

Plan an experiment to find the concentration of copper(II) sulphate solution by making use
of these two reactions. You are provided with

• 50.0 cm3 of copper(II) sulphate solution of unknown concentration

• a sample of powdered zinc which is an excess
• dilute sulphuric acid.

You may use any laboratory apparatus including a balance but not a thermometer.

Your plan should include

• an outline of the procedure

• the measurements you will make
• an explanation of how your results will be used to calculate the concentration of the
copper(II) sulphate solution in mol dm–3.
[Molar mass / g mol–1:Cu = 63.5]

You are not required to carry out your plan.
