Giving Directions

Hello, XII ASKP B. Thanks anyway for participating in ESP class with me, Miss Tina.

Guys… Kita akan mulai materi kita hari ini. Agak sukar dan kurang leluasa bagi saya untuk
menjelaskan materi ini dalam bentuk tulisan, seharusnya ini dijelaskan secara langsung di depan
kalian. However, I’ll always try to do my best to make you understand. Saya harap kalian juga
ya.
Jadi materinya itu bercerita tentang bagaimana caranya membantu orang lain yang kesulitan
menemukan arah tujuan sebuah tempat atau letak sebuah tempat/ruangan.
Nah, kita harus pegang dulu kata-kata kuncinya. Kalo udah kuat sama kata kuncinya dan
konsepnya. Saya yakin kalian pasti bisa dengan mudah menyampaikan arah untuk membantu
orang lain 
Dalam menyampaikan arah jalan atau rute ke suatu tempat, you have to know the map or at least
the direction. Nanti kalian akan ada miss minta menggambar peta sederhana di ruang lingkup
tempat kalian magang. Tapi itu nanti.

Dalam bahasa Inggris seperti ini cara menanyakan arah kepada orang lain, atau mungkin ketika
kalian tersesat dan perlu bantuan, ucapkan ini:

Excuse me, where is the emergency room?

Excuse me, how do I get to Oncology room?
Excuse me, Ma’am. Is there a toilet near here?
Excuse me, Sir. How do I get to delivery room?
Excuse me, Sir. What's the way to X-ray room?
Excuse me, Sir. Where is Admission Department located?
Excuse me, Ma’am. What's the best way to get to Wira room?

Seperti itu ya…. Kalian latih cara pengucapannya.

Saran saya, kalian gunakan aplikasi KAMUSKU untuk mengecek cara pengucapan. Atau bisa
cek di Google.

Nah… selanjutnya kita belajar cara menjawabnya…… Ini nih yang jadi inti materi kita.
Kita pelajari konsepnya, sudah ada contohnya juga. Jadi, kalian coba praktikkan sesering
mungkin, kalian boleh sambil jalan-jalan di rumah, tempat magang, dll untuk
mempraktikkannya, supaya tambah ngerti.

Giving Directions in English

 Go straight (jalan lurus)

Example: Go straight on Sampurna Street.

 Turn left (belok kiri)

Example: Turn left on the supermarket.

 Turn right

Example: Turn right on the next corner.

 Go past (lewati)

Example: Go past the cinema and you'll find the library.

 Cross (menyebrang/sebrangi)

If you cross the street, you'll find a bookstore there.

  go along (berjalanlah di sepanjang)

Example: Go along Plajau road until you find the gas station on the left.

 Around the corner (di sudut)

Example: The canteen is just around the corner.

 Turn back / go back (putar balik)

Example: If you get to the bridge, you went too far, you must turn back.

 Go down (turun)

Example: Go down the stair and you will find the toilet.

 Go up (naik)

Example: Go up the stair and you'll find the Nutrition Installation .

  Go through (melewati)

Example: Take a shortcut to the school going through the park.

 In front of (di depan)

Example: The bus stop is in front of the grocery store.

 Beside (di samping)

Example: The bakery is beside a bank.

 Behind (di belakang)

Example: The Hospitality Services room is behind Safety and Security room.

 Between (di antara)

Example: You can find the coffee shop between the office building and the movie theater.

Nah… sudah dipahami kan konsepnya.
When giving directions to someone it is best to use short basic English sentences. Speak slowly
when talking to the other person. If possible draw a map. Jangan lupa ya, kalau menjelaskan
tentang direction ke orang lain itu harus pelan-pelan, agar orangnya mengerti.

Now, we are going to read the example in dialogs. Next, contohnya!

Dialog 1

Marry : Excuse me, how do I get to Internal Medicine room. Could you show me the way?
Ryan : Sure. Go straight on this hallway until you see Internal Medicine room on the left.
Marry : Thank you so much for your help.
Ryan : You’re welcome.

Hmmm… Apa itu hallway? Cek kamusnya sekarang.

Lalu, cari tahu ada apa dengan kalimat yang bercetak tebal dan yang bergaris bawah?

Dialog 2

Nicky : Hi, I think I am lost. What's the way to Maternity room?

Billy : Oh, you’re going the wrong direction.
Nicky : Really? How do I get there then?
Billy : Do you see the Baby room over there?
Nicky : Yes, I see it
Billy : The Maternity room is behind Baby room.
Nicky : Great, thank you for your help.
Billy : You’re welcome. Take care.

Nah, sampai di sini apakah sudah mulai mengerti dengan konsepnya?
