Explanation Text

What is an explanation text?


An explanation text tells the audience how something works or why something happens.
Explanations detail and logically describe the stages in a process, such as the water
cycle, or how a steam engine works. Other examples could be how a law is made, or why
we blink when we sneeze.

What are the sub-types of explanation text?


Some Subtypes of the Explanation texts are:
1. Consequential explanation : explain effects and outcomes of processes. They are more
commonly used in upper primary and secondary contexts. For example: The effect of
the Global Warming.
2. Factorial explanation : example: The causes of World War 2, Why the Crimes increase
so highly.
3. Causal - Details what causes the change from one stage to the next ie: How a
president is elected.
4. Sequential explanation - These detail the stages in an event eg: How a caterpillar
turns into a moth, How the rain forms, The life-cycle of frog.

Don't get confused between explanation texts and procedural text


An explanation text is similar to a procedural text, and these can often be
confused, however an explanation text explains the how and why behind a process such
as : What causes a Tsunami?, Why are our rain forests disappearing?, The process of
making aluminum.
A procedural text is generally instructs how to make or do something such as
recipe. Although they appear similar they are very different when compared side by side.

What is the communicative purpose of explanation text?


Purpose of an explanation text is to explain the process of how or why something
happens with reference of natural and socio-cultural phenomena.

Generic structure of Explanation


 General statement; stating the phenomenon issues which are to be explained.
 Sequenced explanation; stating a series of steps which explain the phenomena.
 Closing.

Language Features
 Focusing on generic participant; sun, rain, etc
 Using Noun, noun phrase and abstract Noun
 Using conjunction such as: then, as a result, so, if, because, therefore., etc.
 Using technical terms
 Using chronological connection; first, to begin with, then, next, after, finally, etc
 Using passive voice pattern
 Using simple present tense
 Using adverbial phrases
 Using complex sentences

What causes weather?
Weather is the physical condition of the atmosphere at a particular time. It
includes temperature, air pressure and water content.
Weather is produced when air moves from place to place. This moving air is
known as wind. Winds are caused by warm air rising and cooler air moving in to replace
it. Warm air is usually less dense (lighter) than cool air; therefore, it creates low air
pressure. Cool air is denser (heavier) and creates high pressure.
Usually we have fine weather when the air pressure is high and clouds, rain or
snow when the air pressure drops.
