TURBINE SPEED CONTROL (MARK VI);
TURBINE SUPERVISORY (BENTLY NEVADA)
Unit #2, Cernavoda NPP, Romania

Subject: Activities and experience on completed or planned I&C modernization or

maintenance projects

Unit #1 Cernavoda NPP is continuously in service since 1996. For TURBINE CONTROL in this unit it
is used MARK II logic, which is an analog system; for TURBINE SUPERVISORY (vibration,
differential expansion, eccentricity, etc) it is used old GE instrumentation.
Unit #2 Cernavoda NPP was put in service in 2007;
MODERNIZATION: MARK VI logic is used for TURBINE CONTROL and BENTLY NEVADA for
TURBINE SUPERVISORY (digital systems).
In order to verify good function of those 2 systems, following activities were performed during
commissioning:

A. For TURBINE CONTROL were verified:

1. Transmission cable: the transmission cables between Mark VI cabinets, Mark
VI computers, Mark VI SIMPLEX
2. I&C parts of Turbine Speed Control System:
cards arrangement
external TB arrangement
3. Electrical parts of Turbine Speed Control System for:
Grounding
Power supply
Shield signal cables
4. Mark VI hardware and software:
Computers, hard and soft (HMI/CIMPLICITY).
Control System Toolbox for Mark VI Turbine Controller
5. Analog input/output signal loops that connect to and from the Mark VI control panels
6. Digital input/output signal loops that connect to and from the Mark VI control panels
7. Turbine valves calibration:
Servo Firmware configuration.
Regulator Firmware configuration.
Servo operating valves calibration.
8. Mark VI software logic: covers all tests, which are performed with NO
STEAM and with condenser at atmospheric pressure:
Pre-warming
Speed control unit
Load control
Flow control unit
Front standard test
Power load unbalance
9. The Automatic Turbine Start: covers all simulated conditions, which provides
ATS check, using software simulator.

B. For TURBINE SUPERVISORY were verified:

1. The BENTLY NEVADA equipment:
Keyphasor module.
Proximitor/Velomitor monitors (vibration, eccentricity, axial position)
Position monitors (axial position, differential expansion, shell expansion,
rotor expansion)
TDI monitor (software logic)
2. BENTLY NEVADA racks & software function:
Alarms (Alert and Danger).
Bypass function.
Relay monitor (outputs).

Problems solved during commissioning:

MARK VI – BENTLY NEVADA interconnection: vendor didn’t allow 2
dedicated software programs on the same computer; BENTLY NEVADA
racks were used in order to provide analog and digital inputs in MARK VI
and a new screen was designed in HMI, for monitoring and control.
MARK VI – DCC interconnection: in order to provide
REMOTE/MANUAL OPERATION and HOLD LOAD functions
Velomitors behaviour: due to signal double integration for this type of
instrument, false signals were provided in logics; control functions for
these instruments were disabled and protection was provided only by
proximitors.
