This week I traveled to the University of Maryland—which lost to Kansas

night in the NCAA tournament—to talk to students about publishing on

LinkedIn. While I was there, I got into a few conversations about rising tuition
costs and just how expensive it is to attend a four-year university. This got me
thinking: Just how much has tuition increased in recent years? The answer
surprised me. The average tuition and fees at a public, four-year school is 40%
higher in 2015-16 than it was in 2005-06, according to College Board.

If you’re a professor, a faculty member, a student or a former of any of these, I’d

love for you to weigh in on this. How have these rising costs affected you? What
factors would you attribute the increases to? Let me know by writing a post and
using #EDInsights somewhere in the body.

Now let’s get into this week’s best insights and analysis from our Pulse
Education channel

Reading Between the Lines: The U.S. Department of Education recently

released its federal student loan data, and lets just say there were varying
takeaways. Higher-ed economist Carlo Salerno takes a closer look at the figures
and highlights some key metrics that should be included to better inform
policymakers.

leaders to link up and come up with new workforce development strategies that
fit the changing labor market and economy. He outlines some key elements of a
new approach, but warns it won’t be a quick fix.

When Education Became a Sell Out: Karthik Sundaram paid three rupees (a
fraction of a cent) a month for his education growing up. But when he got to
college, things changed. His post, which sparked a lot of conversation, details his
problem with privatized education.

No Child Left Behind? Not True: Presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton says
America’s failing education system is leaving the most vulnerable children
behind. Her latest written-in-third-person post highlights this fact and more in
nine charts.

Join the conversation with a post of your own on the following topics using
#EdInsights in the body.

TFA Scraps A Big Chunk of Its Staff: Teach for America is cutting its
national staff by 15%. These cuts will include the elimination of its diversity
office, which some say will hurt students of color. Do these cuts spell trouble for
the controversial organization? With diversity being a cornerstone of TFA, what
does the elimination of that office mean?

Law and Order: Law graduate Anna Alaburda sued her law school and lost.
Alaburda, who struggled to find a job after graduation, accused her law school
of inflating employment data. If you’re a law student or graduate, was law
school worth it?

A New Kind of Perk: PricewaterhouseCoopers has a turnover problem,

especially among the millennial set. In response, the company has decided to
create co-working spaces to provide more flexibility. They've also offered to help
debt-laden employees pay off their student loans. Should more companies offer
student-loan relief as a company perk? If you’re a millennial, would you be more
likely to choose a company that offers this benefit over one that doesn't?

Yes, education has sold out. Students coming from outside of the country,
financed by their governments are paying full tuitions without regard for the
cost. This puts Americans at disadvantage in two ways. One, because there
are students paying high education rates seemingly without concern,
American students who have to pay their own way struggle to keep up with
the rising costs. Secondly, when faced with admitting a student with cash in
hand, vs a student that is looking for scholarships and loans, educational
institutions are choosing those with cash in hand (foreign students) , and
forcing American students out.
According to an annual report by the Institute of International Education (IIE),
in the 2014-2015 academic year more than 304,000 Chinese students were
enrolled in U.S. colleges and universities, an almost five-fold increase from
just a decade earlier. And these students come from many countries, not just
China.
My opinion, American universities are not just making it even more difficult on
Americans to get a higher education, they are bankrupting our future by
making sure the rest of the world gets educated before Americans do.

HS graduates are being shamed and almost forced to enroll in

college by parents and teachers! Other wise they'll never make
a lot of $$$$$$...and they'll "never make it in life!"
To me this government loan business is a scam...mainly to
insure some bogus college instructors a weekly paycheck....and
votes for the politicians. It's almost criminal!

How the FBI Won the Apple Encryption Battle

What is LinkedIn? Join Today Sign In

  

All opinions below are solely my own and may not reflect the opinions of my
employer.

I had an interesting conversation yesterday about the Apple/FBI court case and
who won.

My discussion partner was curious about how losing the battle would impact the
FBI. (The person I was talking with had not read my earlier post about it being
a win-win scenario. https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/apple-vs-fbi-win-win-
ernest-e-j-hilbert?trk=pulse_spock-articles ) By "losing" they meant that the FBI
came across as lacking in the technical area having first to ask Apple for help
and now using a third party, purportedly Cellebrite.

My take is different. In my opinion, both sides won.

We all get how Apple won.

Apple remains the company of the people. They stood up to the US government,
rallied tech firms to their side and in the end showed the world they are
protecting the privacy of their global customer base. Apple may be American
based but they are a company beholden to no government.

But the FBI/DOJ also won.

First, the FBI needed to set a precedent showcasing that tech firms cannot or
will not help in breaking encryption. Thus the US government is going to have
to do it themselves. And the world accepts that. No one complained about the
FBI trying to break the encryption on the phone. No one argued it was illegal.
No one tried to stop them. They only argued that the FBI can't force the

10 of 33 26/03/2016 21:59
IMPORTIR and DISTRIBUTOR INSULATION MATERIAL https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/importir-distributor-insulation-material...

company that created the encryption to break the encryption.

What is LinkedIn? Join Today Sign In

Precedent is set, the FBI needs to be able to gain access and is allowed to do
what they need to gain access with limited restrictions.

Secondly, in the post Snowden-era where government bashing over poorly kept
secrets is all the rage, the FBI needed the discussion around breaking encryption
to be public and open.

Everyone knew the NSA, GCHQ, FSB and other government controlled
intelligence agencies used tech to spy. But until Snowden stole documents it was
speculation of how and to what extent. Now its public.

The FBI's methods and techniques were also subject to that speculation. The
world thinks the FBI has the newest tech and the latest whiz-bang gadgets and
can break into anything with impunity. We now know that is not the case.

For criminal cases, those that will involve going to court and describing the
investigation, (which are 99.9% of FBI cases) the FBI does not have backdoors
or skeleton keys or secret tech tunnels. The FBI relies on the help of third
parties in conducting tech investigations just as they do in all other
investigations.

(FYI- There approximately 13,000 agents worldwide in comparison to 35,000

cops in NYC. There is no way the FBI can do what they do without help from
interested third parties.)

And so what if you think the FBI is technically incapable. For the most part the
FBI doesn't care what we think about their skillset. It doesn't change their
responsibility. And be honest, there is no doubting the FBI is good at what it
does. They are a primarily reactive agency responding after something happens.
This means they put the puzzle back together to find the truth. They may not

have all the tools right now but they will develop what they
What need so Join

in theSign In
future it's in their kit. They are the best law enforcement agency in the world and
in the end they always get their man/woman.

So with precedent now set and a public fight about encryption under their belt,
it's safe to say the FBI also won this battle.

The Apple vs FBI case played out exactly as it should and perhaps how it was
designed. All parties won. Save for one; the criminals.

As my dad used to say, nothing is unbreakable with time and resources on your
side. The FBI could not create more time, but they just created more resources.

A new business/product line has emerged from security and tech companies
dedicated to breaking down the walls the criminals hide behind. It will be a
self-perpetuating lucrative business as companies design new security measures,
others will design work arounds. Law enforcement, military, intelligence
agencies and private industry will all be potential customers.

(And don't discount the existence of classified tools.)

All we can say is well played Apple, well played FBI. Let’s see where the game
leads next.
