Chemistry --Third Year, HS

Hi there! I am Zinky Blue. I will be
your own personal guide as you
read along through this book. Hope
you enjoy reading!
 Atomic number - the number of protons in an atomic nucleus.
 Electron - negatively charged particles of atoms
 Proton - a positively charge particle that resides within the atomic nucleus
 Neutron - a particle of neutral electric charge and approximately the
same mass as the proton
 Atomic mass - The mass or the weight of an atom, usually expressed in
atomic mass units.
 Electron shell - fuzzy-edged regions within which an electron is likely to be
found
 Galvanize -  a chemical process that is used to coat steel or iron with zinc

Don’t forget to go back to

the WORD BANK as you
face unfamiliar terms :D
Zinc is another of the useful metals that we use every day. It's one of
those elements humans have been using for thousands of years. You'll
find zinc in minerals, alloys, and even your body. It wasn't ever really
discovered, zinc was used long ago when ancient peoples were first
creating brass.

In 1746, Marggraf was isolated and described zinc as a

separate metal. Zinc is normally found as a part of larger
mineral compounds. When isolated, it is a very shiny, bluish-
white metal. Unfortunately, it is not as malleable as its
Margraff
neighbor copper is and has fewer uses.

If you have been reading about all of the

elements, you should be excited to know that zinc
is the last transition element in the fourth
period/row on the table of elements. Zinc's
location at the end of the transition metals shows
that is has a completely filled third electron

If we will take a closer look at the picture from the

previous page, we will get this simple representation of
the element Zinc on periodic tables. (Remember: If
there are some words that you don’t understand, go
back to our Word Bank and try to find them there)
This is how your Zinc will look like in its pure form at
room temperature. It is of bluish gray color with
lustrous appearance. Zinc, at room temperature
appears to be solid but brittle.

The abundance of zinc in the Earth's crust is

estimated to be about 0.02 percent. That places
the element about number 24 on the list of the
elements in terms of their abundance. A pie chart
is given to give you knowledge on what the earth’s
crust is majorly made of.
 Zinc is used to galvanize metals to prevent their corrosion.

 Zinc is used in alloys such as brass, nickel silver, typewriter metal;

various solder formulas, German silver, etc.

 Zinc is used in die castings, especially by the automobile industry.

 Rolled zinc is used as part of the containers of batteries.

 Zinc oxide is used as a white pigment in watercolors and paints, and as an activator in

the rubber industry.

 Zinc chloride is used as a deodorant and as a wood preservative.

 Zinc sulfide is used in luminescent pigments, for making the hands of clocks and other

items that glow in the dark.

 Lotions made of calamine, a mix of Zinc -(hydroxyl-) carbonates and silicates, are used

to treat skin rash.
