 What is Procedure Text?

Procedure text is a text that instruct how to make or how to use something through a sequence
of actions or steps.
 Purpose of Procedure Text
The communicative purpose of this text is to describe how something is made through a
sequence of actions or steps.

 Generic structure of Procedure Text

– Goal: It is located in the title of the text and is used to indicate the purpose of the text.
(e.g : How to make noodle)
– Material or Ingredient: Contains materials or tools needed in the steps to carry out the
process.
(e.g : the material to cook omelette are egg, onion, vegetable oil, etc. )
– Step/methods: Contains methods or steps taken to achieve the objectives in the text.
(e.g : first, wash the tomatoes, onion, …., second cut the onions becomes slice. . . )

 Language features of Procedure Text

– Using adverbial of sequence / Using temporal conjunction
(e.g: first, second, third, the last)
– Using command / imperative sentence
(e.g : put the noodles on the . . ., cut the onion. . ., wash the tomatoes. . . )
– Using adverbials (Adverbs) to express detail the time, place, manner
.(e.g. for five minutes, 2 hours, etc.)
– Using action verbs
(e.g : make, take, boil, cook)

 Example of Procedure Text:

How to Make Scrambled Eggs

Let’s learn how to make yummy scrambled eggs at your home with this easy recipe! Prepare
the ingredients:
- 2 eggs
- Milk (if desired)
- 1 teaspoon of butter
- A pinch of salt and pepper
1. First, crack the eggs into a small bowl and add a pinch of salt and pepper. Whisk until all
well blended.
2. In a frying pan, add butter and let it melt.
3. Then, pour the eggs and milk, and for around 20 seconds, do not stir it.
4. After that, fold the eggs to the center and stir with spatula.
5. Repeat the previous step until all the eggs are mostly cooked.

- Finding specific information refers to the ability to find the exact, precise fact or description
of something mentioned in the text.
The examples of specific information: the noodle, the stove, a bowl, 3 minutes, etc.
- Finding general information refers to general idea of a text. It can be the main idea of a text,
the main idea of each paragraph, the topic of a text, the moral value of a text, the generic
structure of a text, the social function of a text.

III. Wh-questions in Procedure Text concern on what, where, and how.

 What question is for asking thing.

 Where question is for asking a place.
 How is for asking a process, a procedure, or a way to do something.
