E arth Day gets bigger every year at Penn Charter. This
year, on April 22, each division came up with inventive
ways to steward our planet.
Lower School students enjoyed a life-sized geography
lesson with a giant Earth Balloon. Twenty feet tall and cre-
ated using 10,000 satellite images of Earth taken from space,
the Earth Balloon traveled – deflated and folded in a sack
– from the Delaware Children’s Museum.
Students journeyed around the world in a day. “You begin
the presentation in one time zone, so by the end of the pre-
sentation, you’re in a different day,” said Kevis Mason, who
works in the museum’s education department.
Children explored the Earth Balloon from both outside and
in as Karen Bush, also from the Delaware Children’s Museum,
asked them questions: “Why can’t we see the whole earth
from here,” she asked first graders.
“Because it’s humungous!”
“Where would we have to go to see the Earth?”
“Space.”

The volunteers from Har Zion were led by co-chairs, Gladys Shubin and Barbara Berkowitz.
Approximately 40 guests were in attendance for the service conducted by Inglis House’s
Jewish chaplain, Cantor Naomi Hirsch, and enjoyed the sumptuous traditional Passover
meal.

Jewish Genealogical Society of Greater

Philadelphia Presents Genealogy Fair
A Genealogy Fair will be held at Temple Sholom in Broomall, 55 Church Lane, Broomall,
PA on Sunday, June 12, 2011 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Experts in genealogy will be avail-
able to answer questions and to help attendees start tracing their family history. There
will be more than a dozen “Stations” where both the novice and the advanced researcher
will find useful information and personal one-on-one assistance. As a special feature, free
membership in the Jewish Genealogical Society of Greater Philadelphia for the remainder
of 2011 is being offered to non-members. This special offer is valid only during the hours
of the Fair.
The Genealogy Fair is sponsored by the Jewish Genealogical Society of Greater Philadel-
phia, which was founded as the Jewish Genealogical Society of Philadelphia (JGSP) in 1979
with Harry D. Boonin serving as the first President. In 2000, two Affiliates were established:
The Delaware County/Main Line Affiliate and the South Jersey Affiliate.
In 2001, with the addition of the two Affiliates, the Society name was changed to the
Jewish Genealogical Society of Greater Philadelphia (JGSGP). Topics at the General meet-
ings and at Affiliate meetings are varied and relate to researching Jewish ancestry.
General meetings of the JGSGP are held monthly, with the exception of January, July and
August, at 7:30 p.m. on the second Monday of the month at Reform Congregation Keneseth
Israel, 8339 Old York Road, Elkins Park, PA. The Delaware County/Main Line Affiliate has
meetings four Sunday afternoons a year at Martins Run Lifecare Community, 11 Martins
Run, Media, PA; and the South Jersey Affiliate meets periodically at Congregation Beth
Tikvah, 115 Evesboro-Medford Road, Marlton, NJ.
There will be “Stations” at the Fair for everyone’s level of research. Many of the “Stations”
will be staffed by members of the JGSGP, such as, Getting Started; JRI-Poland; Russian
Research; German Research; Computerized Family Tree Programs; Books and Maps; and
Philadelphia Immigrant Bank Records. There will also be “Stations” hosted by the Family
History Center; the US National Archives (NARA); and the Southern New Jersey Agricul-
tural Colonies. In addition, Society Members will display their private collections; and
there will be a special “Station” about Scrapbooking Your Family Tree.
This is a wonderful event for anyone who is interested in family ancestry. There is no
admission charge to the Fair, and parking is free. For information, call 610-544-6877.
