What is Feng Shui?

Feng Shui is all about the way that we live in harmonize with the nature,
benefiting from the ‘positive’ energies in our living environment. By enhancing
the relationship between people and their environment we find that the
correct combination will create an ability to absorb the ‘Ch’i’ or cosmic energy.

Good Feng Shui can be achieved by positioning furniture, fixtures etc at the
appropriate places based on careful calculations done by the Feng Shui
practitioner. Never the less, it still boils down to the skills of the practitioner,
and his ability to read the different aspect and elements in the environment
and the people, achieving the prefect overall balance of ‘Yin’ and ‘Yang’.

Pronunciation and Meaning

There are different ways of pronouncing the words, depending upon where you
are in the world. Cantonese people pronounce it “Fung Soy” or on the China
mainland they call it “Foong schway”, we recommend sticking to which one
you feel comfortable with pronouncing!

The words translate from ‘Feng’ meaning wind and ‘Shui’ meaning water.
However, the real explanation of what it really means is based around the
invisible Ch’is energy which is carried along by the wind and water.

Ch’i Energy

If you want to understand how Feng Shui works, you need to learn about Ch’i
energy - invisible energy. This energy flows through the air, similar to the way
radio waves or satellite transmissions work.

Ch’i is a source of prosperity, harmony, health and honour. To allow for it’s full
effect it should be accumulated gently, but it must never be trapped otherwise
it will stagnate and turn into “bad ch’i” which brings bad luck. Since Ch’I is
energy, places where it gathers become rich, full of opportunities and luckier.
Places where this energy is absent, life is barren and unproductive. Much of the
practice of Feng Shui is to allow the Ch’i to flow throughout your living space.

Yin and Yang

Yin and Yang symbolise energy also, where Yin is symbolised by a broken line
represented as a female passive energy whilst Yang is symbolised by an
unbroken line, the opposite of Yin and is represented as a male active energy.
This will be explained in detail at a later stage.
This web site will explore with you as to how Feng Shui can benefit your work,
house and how it can enhance our overall well-being.
Clearing Clutter

In feng shui terms, before you can put into practice the principles it is essential
that you rid yourself of all clutter that is blocking the natural flow of chi in
your home and make way for some space for new opportunities to enter your
life.

Clutter can be defined as anything that you no longer wear or use. Clutter can
cause stagnation to problem areas that you may have and if not cleared
thoroughly a remedy can actually worsen problems rather than cure.

Storage

A well designed storage system should be created and be controllable. Look

around your home and see where your clutter is then work out how it connects
to the Pa Kua and which direction you should be following. You should bear in
that locating storage in your most inauspicious directions is a good way of
making sure that ch’i stays trapped and out of the way. Your goal should be to
surround yourself with free flowing ch’i energy and by doing so you will be able
to find the things you need easily.

Internal clutter

Internal clutter is related to your health, especially your digestive system and
you owe it to yourself to make sure that your health is the best it can be. Fresh
air and exercise can help to keep you fit and healthy but also by having plants
in the home can help with oxygenation of the atmosphere. Try not to keep
things “bottled up” inside by letting go of old hang ups and recurring problems
and you should feel more motivated, optimistic and more positive about life
and about yourself.

Next Steps

- Always keep the entrance to your home clutter free as this is considered to be
the area that new opportunities and chi enter through.
- Keep the hallway and stairs free of boxes, newspaper, toys etc., and let the
ch’i flow freely.
- In the bedroom put out of season clothes and store away unworn shoes but
not under the bed.
- Mend any broken appliances or throw them out. Your energy should increase.
- Clear paperwork, messages, post etc., you will discover that you now have
space for all those opportunities and possibilities.
Yin and Yang

Yin and Yang is at the heart of Feng Shui and Chinese philosophy and are used
to compare everything that exists in our lives. The terms are often described as
complementary but opposite states. Balancing Yin and Yang encourages the
flow of Ch’i around the living spaces.

“Yin” as a word conveys the secret, dark, passive and female side of the
universe whilst “Yang” is a word that includes everything overt, bright, active
and masculine. This concept can be applied to almost everything - day and
night, bright and dark, active and passive, male and female. Feng Shui teaches
us that yang compliments yin and vice versa.

Colours

If we speak of a room needing to more Yang, hot, positive colours should be

applied - reds, yellows and oranges. In a Yin room such as a bedroom, cool,
passive colours like blues or purples are needed. Rooms are often yin and yang
or various reasons.

Yin and Yang Symbols

Yin and Yang is often represented by the Taoist tai ch’i symbol, showing a
circle while the shaded section represents Yin energy whilst the lighter section
represents Yang. Within each section there is a circle of the opposite energy.
This emphasises the principle that nothing is totally yin and nothing is totally
yang.

Yin can also be symbolised by a broken line while yang is symbolised by an

unbroken line.

Examples of Yin and Yang in Everyday Life

I’ve seen Yin and Yang be applied to facial features:

Yin - cleft on tip of nose, parted front teeth, cleft chin

Yang - eyes that are close together, narrow & deep-set slanted eyebrows
towards bridge of nose, strong/pronounced cheekbones

To occupations:

Yin - teaching, writing, research

Yang - business, sales, sports
Yin and Yang for the Home
Front Entrance

The direction of the front door should matter more than most other Feng Shui
considerations and is considered to be the “mouth” as the most all-important
ch’i enters the building through this direction.

The direction in which the door points determines the kind of ch’i that enters
the house. We know from reading about eight Trigrams, the pa kua, that each
of the eight directions is attributed to one of the Trigrams. The sort of ch’i
that enters a door facing South is that which is conditioned by the ch’ien or
Heaven trigram. It is a strong, masculine yang ch’i and the exact opposite of
the ch’i that enters through a door facing North, which will receive the more
yin type of ch’i associated with the k’un or Earth Trigram. This is why the
direction in which the door faces is most important and why it affects more
advanced feng shui like Flying Star feng shui.

The door itself should be solid and preferably not punctured by a vulnerable
glass panel - for crime prevention as well as feng shui reasons.

The next thing you should do is check to see if any alignment is aimed at your
front door, generating “poison arrows”. A “poison arrow” is created where ch’i
is able to gather momentum up a long straight street for example. If such a
configuration exists pointing towards the front door, try to deflect it with a
hedge, or something similar to block it. If this fails and the “poison arrow” is
caused by a major alignment, then hang an octagonal pa kua mirror over your
door, pointing in the offending direction, to send back the sha ch’i whence it
came.

Never just hang pa kua mirrors up for fun and certainly never inside your home
or office. If this fails too, a more drastic step is to re-orient the whole front
door, but this has other impacts on the feng shui of the building and should be
done only with expert advice.

- The front door should open onto an uncramped hall space containing no
clutter
- It should not face a bathroom door, mirror or have obstructions.
- The front door should not lead in to a hall that passes straight through the
house and out of the back door, otherwise the ch’i entering will be
immediately conducted out of the house again without benefiting the
occupants. If this is the case, hang wind chimes or place potted plants in the
hall to deflect or slow down the ch’i.
Hall

Leading from the front entrance, the hall should be well lit to encourage the
entry of ch’i. A hall that is a “through” hall, passing directly to the back door is
bad feng shui, as ch’i will pass straight through the house without accumulating.
In such a case add decorative features like indoor plants or a hall table to
deflect the ch’i from its direct path. Another cure is to hang wind chimes from
the ceiling of the hall to slow the passage of the ch’i.

Corridors and stairs are very similar from a feng shui point of view, both being
narrow passages from one part of the house to another. The only difference is
that stairs are inclined passages. Like halls, which carry the ch’i from one room
or another.

- Long corridors leading from the front door should be screened off or wind
chimes be placed.
- Halls should be brightly lit as they conduct ch’i from one part of the house to
another.

Stairs

In many Western houses the staircase often follows on almost directly after a
short stretch of hall. This allows ch’i to come in the front door and rush
straight up the stairs. This is not advisable - remember that the best ch’i flows
slowly and not in direct straight lines. The solution to this problem is the
hanging of wind chimes between the door and the stairs to slow down the ch’i.
Ideally the staircase should turn away from the front door.

On difficult staircases, it is sometimes useful to place stronger lights on the

stairs themselves or in extreme circumstances place a barber’s pole on a
landing. The pole promotes the movement of ch’i up the stairs and moves in a
spiral fashion.

- Spiral staircases are not considered good feng shui because they act like
“screwdrivers” accelerating ch’i upwards and downwards at a rapid pace.
- The front door should not face a staircase directly, a screen should be put in
place.
Personal Direction

It’s important to find out which directions are auspicious for you and this can
be achieved by finding out your Kua number. Your Kua number determines your
Best Directions and the Eight Aspirational locations always remain the same.

Determining your Kua Number and Best Directions

To determine your Best Directions (for sleep, study and eating) it is necessary
to calculate your kua number using the following steps:

- If you are born between 1st Jan and 20th February you will then have to
check the date on which the Chinese (Lunar) New Year fell in the year of your
birth. If you were born before the Chinese New Year, you should subtract one
from the Year of your birth.
- Take the last two digits of the year of your birth and add them together. For
example, if you were born in 1974, then add 7 and 4 gives 11. If the result is
greater than 9 add the digits together, e.g. 1+1=2.
- If you are a male, subtract this answer from 10, e.g. 10-2=8. If you are a
female, add 5 to the number produced before e.g. 2+5=7.
- If the number is bigger than 9 then add the digits together again.
- If the answer is 5 and you are male, use Kua number 2. If you are female and
the answer is 5, use kua number 8.
- The result is your kua number.

Love

If your main focus in on relationships, love or marriage, be sure to sleep with

your head pointing North. This is the best direction to sleep in order to
enhance the love sector in your life. For good family and overall relationships,
use one or more of the following in the North sector of the room or desk: Plants,
Red Flowers, Picture of Plants or Flowers. If your focus is on romantic love,
marital prospects, or marital bliss, use one or more of the following in the
North sector of the room or desk: Crystals, Lots of Red Roses, Bright Light, The
Chinese Character for “Double Happiness,” a Pair of Mandarin Ducks or
Lovebirds, or Two Red Hearts.

Career/Prosperity

If prosperity, career, or education is your main focus, sleep with your head
pointing East. Position your desk so that you are facing East when seated. Your
best bet is to place healthy green plants in the East sector of room or desk.
This is your prosperity location. You might also use candles in this area. If you
want to become famous or recognized, make certain the area is brightly lit. Or
you might want to place a small grouping of horses along with some red flowers,
which signifies fame. Try using a globe in the East area of the room or desk for
success. Figurines of the Chinese gods Fuk and Luk are also notable additions to
the career area.
You can use a metal wind chime in the East area of room or desk. The elephant
is a symbol of wisdom, and may activate good business sense or study habits.
Plum blossoms are also good for career and success–especially if in full bloom.
If you are looking to gain wealth, place some antique, gold coins in the East
area of your room or desk. If you can find some old Chinese coins, tie 3 or 8 of
them together with a red cord. Another suggestion is to place a frog by your
main entrance discreetly by a green plant. This signifies arrival of wealth.

Health

If health is your main focus, sleep with your head pointed Southeast. Also,
position your desk so that you are facing Southeast when seated. Using a peach
blossom plant is said to have a healing effect on someone who is ill, so you
might want to use it in the Southeast area of the room or desk to ensure good
health. This is your personal health location.

A figurine of the Chinese god Sau is said to ensure good health and longevity, as
are cranes. Bamboo is also good in this Southeast are of the room or desk, and
can be used as furniture. Other symbols of longevity are: tortoise, unicorn, bat,
deer, rabbit, and cicada. You can use figurines and/or pictures of these items.
A beautiful Chinese vase also signifies good fortune and health.
Peace and Harmony
For peace, harmony and overall fortune, you can use a unicorn, Chinese vase,
Peacock picture, plants or flowers in the South area of your room or desk. If
Harmony is your main focus, sleep with your head pointing South. You may also
position your desk so that you are facing South when seated.
