Speed Test

Speed “is the ability to move all/some parts of the body as quickly as
possible”. (Class note) for example the speed of a punch or the speed of a
sprinter and how fast he can come of the line. Speed can be linked to a
public service speed can be used in the police force. Because if you are
running after a criminal you would need to chase him and catch him in
the shortest possible amount of time.

Speed can be linked to a sport such as American football. For example

Reggie Bush is a professional gridiron football running back they are
members of the offensive team and line up directly behind the offensive
line. Running Back’s carry the ball for the offensive team. So you would
need a high level of speed to break the defence line and get to the end
zone and goal line. Some other sports which need a high level of speed
are football, rugby and running.

A test to measure speed are the 40m sprint the purpose of this test is to
determine acceleration, maximum running test and speed endurance when
running 100m or over a long period of time. The test involves running a
single maximum sprint over a set distance with a time recorded. The test
can be conducted over 50 meters.

Cardio vascular endurance

Cardio Vascular endurance is the ‘Ability of the heart and lungs to work
for a prolonged time period without becoming fatigued.’ (Class notes).

An example of public services that requires good cardio vascular

endurance is the police force and the army. A policeman needs a good
level of cardiovascular endurance to be able to chase a criminal, on foot,
and someone in the army needs a good level of cardio vascular endurance
to go on patrol for long periods of time and then might even get in a
chase.
A lot of sports require a high level of cardio vascular endurance for
example, football, rugby, tennis and American football etc…
People in sports with high level of cardio vascular endurance include;
Bastian Schweinsteiger

These both play in midfield and do a lot of box to box running for their
teams helping score goals and gets back to help their defence. They also
need a higher level of cardio vascular endurance than their opponent
because when their opposition gets fatigued they won’t be which will
make it a lot easier for them. Another example of an athlete with a very
high level of cardio vascular endurance is Paula Radcliffe. She needs a
very high level of C.V. endurance to be able to run marathons. Paula
Radcliffe

There are many ways to test for cardio vascular endurance. The police
use the multistage fitness test in which the minimum level is 5.4 and the
army do a 1.5 mile run which must be completed in under 10 and a half
minutes.

Cardio vascular endurance is a key component of fitness in almost every

public service and almost every sport. Therefore there is a strong link
between them both because of cardio vascular endurance.

Reaction time
Reaction time is “the time that elapses between a stimulus and the
response to it” (wordnetweb.princeton.edu/perl/webwn)

A fast reaction time is needed in many public services for example a

policeman needs a fast reaction time if he breaks a door down and
someone pulls a gun on him he needs to draw his gun without thinking
and shoot him first.
A fast reaction time is needed in sports for example a goalkeeper needs a
very fast reaction time if someone shoots and it is deflected.
Reaction time is also needed in day to day life for example if a plate falls
of the table you would try and catch it before it hits the ground and
smashes.

People with a good reaction time include;

Many Pacquiao Joe Hart

Joe Hart needs a fast reaction time to be able to save close range shots or shots that are
deflected. Many Pacquiao needs a fast reaction time to be able to dodge
incoming punches and to then punch back him self.

Agility Test

Agility “Is the ability to change direction of the body at speed without
losing control” (Class Note) for example how fast you can do a side step
or change direction in football. Agility can be linked to a public service
such as police force because if you’re running after someone and they
change direction e.g. going round a corner. You need to do the same as
fast as you can to avoid wasting any time and not let him get away.

Agility can be linked to a sport such as football. For example Steven

Gerrard needs to change direction fast. Because when he has the ball he
needs to get out the way of other players to avoid losing the ball. So he
would need a good level of Agility to play football and avoid losing the
ball to other players. Another sport which would need a high level of
Agility would be gymnastics. For example Olympic winner Louis Smith
Won a bronze medal for a good performance on the pummelled house she
would need a high level of Agility to perform for a long period of time.

A test to measure Agility would be The Illinois Agility Run the purpose
of this test is to determine your running agility. The length of the course
is 10 meters and the width is 5 meters four cones are used to mark the
start and finish and the two turning points. On the command “GO” the
subject gets up as quickly as possible and runs the course in the direction
indicted, without knocking any of the cones over on the way. When the
subject reaches the finish line the stopwatch is stopped and the time is
recoded.
