Reference Manual, November 1994.
1. Introducing the EPSON Stylus COLOR 1520, EPSON Stylus COLOR 800, EPSON
STYLUS COLOR 600, and EPSON Stylus COLOR 400
This is a brief summary of four new EPSON color inkjet printers. This Programming Note
(revision 3) applies to the following printers:
EPSON has eliminated the 3-Color inkjet printers category by introducing the EPSON Stylus
COLOR 400. The Stylus COLOR 400 will be the lowest cost 4-color printer available in the line
of the EPSON Stylus COLOR Series. The EPSON Stylus COLOR 600 and EPSON Stylus
COLOR 800 are the successors to the EPSON Stylus COLOR 500 and the EPSON Stylus Pro,
respectively. The EPSON Stylus COLOR 1520 is the wide carriage printer version of the Stylus
COLOR 800 that support up to A2 and US-C paper sizes (13.6 inch printable width). This
printer also has a tractor feed unit built-in. The EPSON Stylus COLOR 400, EPSON Stylus
COLOR 800 are sold worldwide, currently. The EPSON Stylus COLOR 600 is also available
worldwide, except in Japan. The Stylus COLOR 1520 is current sold in Japan and Europe, but it
will not be available in America until summer 1997.
The EPSON Stylus COLOR 400 is an ESC/P Raster printer and has only parallel port interface.
An ESC/P Raster printer does not support any fonts and font commands. The Stylus COLOR
400 can print up to 720x720 dpi, while the EPSON Stylus COLOR 600, 800 and 1520 can print
up to 1440x720 dpi. Both Parallel and Mac serial interface are available for these three printers.
In addition, optional EPSON Type B Interface adapter board is also available for the EPSON
Stylus COLOR 800 and 1520.
Although, the EPSON Stylus COLOR 600, 800 and 1520 can print up to 1440x720, the EPSON
developed driver technique used to achieve this printing mode is proprietary. There is no
information available for ISV’s driver development, currently. However, two new ESC/P2
commands associated with this printing mode, “ESC ( \” and “ESC ( s”, are provided in this
Programming Notes for references.
All four printers offer both new print heads and ink formulation that improve the print quality
significantly over their predecessors. The same new Cyan, Magenta &Yellow ink cartridges are
used in all four printers. The EPSON Stylus COLOR 400 and 600 utilize the same black ink
cartridge as the EPSON Stylus COLOR 500, While the EPSON Stylus COLOR 800 and 1520
use a new black ink formulation and cartridge.

4. Ink Density vs. Printing Mode
Tables 5 to 7 summarize the limitation of ink duty in the different print modes for the different
printers. The recommended amount of ink varies when printing with one ink, two inks, or three
inks. The combination of two ink drops of either C, M or Y will produce Red, Green or Blue
color, known as RGB. While the combination of three ink drops of C, M, Y, will produce a
composite Black. The ink duty to produce RGB & composite black is therefore reduced for each
C, M, Y to avoid color saturation. The ink duty values are recommended as a starting point,
depending on the different halftone module you select, you may find that by adjusting these
values, the output quality can improve for your driver.

Dot size is selected automatically by the printer firmware for each printing resolution.

5. ESC/P2 Commands Setting Order
The following is a sample guideline for setting the ESC/P2 command sequences in the Non-
compressed graphic mode:
Revision: 03 Page: 12

6. Paper Feed Sequence
For the new printers, the Paper Feed Sequence is recommended. It can be set with the “SN”
command after entering the EPSON Remote-Mode. The EPSON Remote Mode is a control
language for serial printer products. It allows various setting of the printer through the interface.
Format:
m1 m2 Selection
00H 00H Default
00H 01H Plain paper (other than postcards, envelopes, index cards
or transparencies)
00H 02H Postcards, envelopes, index cards
00H 03H Transparencies, *
* For Stylus COLOR 1520, m2=01H should be selected for transparency.
For Stylus COLOR 800, m2=03H should be selected for Glossy Film
Note:
- The Select Paper Sequence should select before each print job.
- While in the EPSON Remote Mode, ESC/P commands are recognized by the printer until
“ESC 00H 00H 00H” is invoked to exit this Mode.
- See the previous section for additional information on command setting order.

720 x 720 0, 1, 2 5 5 1, 8*, 24*
* m = 8, 24 is available only in the Stylus COLOR 800/1520, when
printing at 180x180 and 360x360 with microweave turned off.
Note:
- Select the appropriate values for each parameter for the different printing
resolution.
- Refer to the ESC/P Reference Manual for more details.

8. Select Dot Size Command
Format:
Parameter range:
Function:
Note:
- This command is depending on the printer model. EPSON Stylus COLOR 600,
800, 1520 only
- This command is implemented after entering raster graphics mode - ESC ( G -
and prior to sending raster graphics data - ESC.
- This command must be executed before paper feeding.
- When printing 180dpi , the dot size will be expanded automatically with a unique
algorithm.

9. Select Monochrome/Color Printing Mode Command
If printing with only true Black ink (monochrome mode), printing speed can be enhanced by
selecting the following command. This command does not affect the ink used for printing, it only
affects internal buffering schemes which can improve performance.
The ESC/P2 command to select Monochrome Printing Mode or Color Printing Mode is:
Format:
Parameter range:
n1 = 00
n2 = 00 selects default mode
= 01 selects monochrome printing mode
= 02 selects color printing mode
Function:
Notes:
- this command must be executed before paper feeding.
- the default mode used whenn2=00, or if no command is sent is as follows:
- If black and color cartridges are both installed, the Color Printing Mode is
the default.
- If the color cartridge is empty or removed, the Monochrome Printing
Mode is the default for the Stylus COLOR 800 and 1520 only. For the
Stylus COLOR 400 and 600, the printer will enter an error condition.
- this command is reset by the initialization command and the default mode is used.

10. Set Relative Horizontal Print Position Command
This is a new ESC/P2 command for setting the relative horizontal print position. This command
allows the horizontal print position to move at 1/1440 inch increment.
Format:
Parameter range:
n1 = 160
n2 = 5
0 ≤ m1 ≤ 255
0 ≤ m2 ≤ 127
Function:
- Move the horizontal print position left or right from the current position, as
specified by the following formula:
Notes:
- This command is depending on the printer model. EPSON Stylus COLOR 600,
800, 1520 only.
- The printer ignores this command if it would move the print position outside the
printing area.
- The EPSON Stylus COLOR 600, 800 & 1520 support only parameter of n1=160,
n2=5, this means the unit of move length is 1/1440 inch.

11. Select Printing Speed Command
Format:
Parameter range:
0 ≤n≤ 2
Function:
Notes:
- This command is depending on the printer model. EPSON Stylus COLOR 800
and 1520 only.
- When printing at 1440x720, speed 2 should be selected.
