PDP-886 GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The LINK PDP-886 is designed to insert Closed Caption data into a component serial
digital data-stream. Its data handling capability is built on two on-board 8-bit
micro-controllers, each with their own serial data ports and optional internal modems.
The serial digital video input is terminated into 75 . There are two encoded serial digital
outputs plus two encoded composite analog outputs. In addition, a built-in Closed
Caption decoder provides two additional composite analog outputs with decoded
captions for monitoring purposes.
Closed Caption data input utilizes a nine-pin Subminiature D connector. Both RS-232
and RS-422 interface standards are supported. Two built-in modems (optional) provide
direct connection to a telephone line for remote captioning applications.
Communication baud rate is set by a front panel DIP switch.
The actual Closed Caption data waveform is digitally generated for complete accuracy.
The user may encode on Line 21 (NTSC) or Line 22 (PAL) in either Field 1 or Field 2. A
built-in EDH (Error Detection and Handling) processor can monitor the incoming signal
for impairments and insert new EDH data. This function will insure that the output EDH
Checksum will reflect the change introduced by the Closed Caption data waveform.
Operational status reporting is handled by a front panel LCD display. Transparent
By-Pass may be selected from the front panel. An encoded test message may also be
selected from the front panel.
The internal Closed Caption Decoder is controlled by a front panel rotary switch. A total
of nine data channels may be selected: CC1, CC2, T1, and T2 in Field 1 along with
CC3, CC4, T3, T4, and XDS in Field 2.
Housed in a rugged 1RU chassis, the PDP-886 is backed by LINK's unmatched 10-year
warranty.

PDP-886 TECHNICAL SETUP
1. Mid-range all internal pots. Apply an NTSC Serial Digital Interface (SDI) signal to
the input BNC, P2. Outputs should be connected to appropriate monitoring
equipment: the serial digital output signal should be connected to a Tektronix 601i/e
or other SDI monitoring device. Note: internal relay by-passing should allow the
input signal to loop through the PDP-886 from BNC P2 to BNC P1 before power-up.
The analog outputs should be connected to a video test system consisting of a
waveform monitor, oscilloscope, video monitor, and (optional) vector-scope. Also, a
computer with a serial "COM" port will be required. If the PDP-886 under test has
an internal modem, the test system will require a modem as well with a telephone
line connection (or telephone line simulator).
2. Power unit up slowly with a VariAC or other variable auto-transformer. Check for
excess current. Check internal regulated voltages at connector J6. In order, front
to back, the power supply voltages should be +12Vdc, +5Vdc, and -12Vdc.
3. Connect a voltmeter to TP3 on the digital I/O board. While monitoring the digital
video output, adjust RV7, also on the digital I/O board, until the picture just locks.
Measure the voltage at TP3 and continue to adjust RV7 until TP3 changes by
250mV from the original lock point.
4. Examine the electrical characteristics of the digital video bitstream at BNC P1.
Level should be 800mV ±10%. Eye pattern display should show approximately 1ns
rise times with over-shoot <5%. Jitter should be <750ps. (Less than .20 Unit
Intervals.) Error Detection and Handling (EDH) checksum should be present. Data
should be error free.
5. The front panel Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) should indicate the following:
Encode = "Off"
Standard = "NTSC"
Decode = "CC1"
Baud Rate = "1200"
Adjust RV1 on the mother board for optimum LCD contrast. All front panel LEDs
should be dark.
5
PDP-886 TECHNICAL SETUP (CON'T)
6. Examine the analog encoder output at BNC J5 or J6. Adjust RV2 on the digital I/O
board for 1Vpp composite analog video output.
7. Examine the analog decoder output at BNC J8 or J9. On the digital I/O board,
adjust RV3 for output back porch at 0Vdc. Next, adjust RV6, also on the digital I/O
board for 1Vpp video output.
8. Connect the PDP-886 for data input from a personal computer using an RS-232
interface. The connection should be made to the female 9-pin subminiature "D", J2.
The computer should be running a terminal program that will allow ASCII characters
to be transmitted via the serial port. Protocol should be 1200,n,8,1.
9. From the computer, type ^A?. Note: the symbol ^ indicates the "Ctrl" key on the
computer keyboard. You should hold the "Ctrl" key down while pressing the "A"
key. Release the "Ctrl" key before pressing the "?". All commands require
upper-case characters; therefore, "Caps Lock" = ON. With each character from the
computer, the front panel "Data 1" LED should light briefly. In response to the ^A?
command, the PDP-886 should respond with the following message:
10. From the computer, type ^A3. The Closed Caption waveform should appear on
Line 21 in Field 1. Confirm at both digital and analog outputs. LCD should also
indicate waveform presence ("Encode") on Field 1.
11. Reset the PDP-886 by issuing a ^AR command from the keyboard. Reset will
cause the LCD to re-write, with the Encode field indicating "OFF."
12. Move the RS-232 data cable to the second 9-pin subminiature "D" connector,
J1, on the PDP-886. Repeat steps 8 through 11.
13. Next, invoke a compatible Closed Caption software program on the computer.
A list of compatible software vendors is available from LINK Electronics, or may
be found at: http://www.linkelectronics.com/htm/whoswho.htm. Using an
appropriate caption data file, begin the encoding process in CC1. The internal
closed caption decoder should be set to CC1 as well.
14. Observe the output (analog) decoded captions. On the digital I/O board, adjust
RV4 to set the character background level to 10IRE units. Next, adjust RV5 for
character luminance level at 90IRE units.
6
PDP-886 TECHNICAL SETUP (CON'T)
15. For advanced testing, use a second computer to simultaneously send caption
data for Field 2, Line 21. This computer should be connected to the second
serial port, J1, and should run appropriate software to encode CC3 or XDS (V-Chip)
data. With each character from the second computer, the "Data 2" LED should
light briefly. The internal closed caption decoder may be set to the appropriate
data channel to confirm the accuracy of the Field 2 encoding.
16. Interrupt the caption software programs and return to a terminal program that
will allow ASCII characters to be transmitted via the serial port or, in this case,
via internal or external modem. By telephone line connection (or by telephone
line simulator), connect the computer's modem to the PDP-886's modem.
Note: you cannot connect a telephone wire directly from modem to modem.
17. Use the computer's terminal program to "call" the PDP-886's modem. If you are
using a telephone line simulator, it may only be necessary to issue the "ATDT"
command with no accompanying telephone number required. Note: the "ATDT"
command is part of the "AT Command Set" established by Hayes
Microcomputer Products, Inc. When the call is initiated, confirm the following:
a.) The red "ring indicator" (RI) LED should light for the appropriate modem
b.) The yellow "off hook" (OH) LED should light when the PDP-886 "answers."
c.) The green "carrier detect" (CD) LED should light when the two modems
have established contact.
18. Once connected via the modem, the PDP-886 should respond to commands as
though connected via the 9-pin serial port. You may repeat steps 9-14 as
desired and the results should be the same. However, the simple ^A? command
will serve to confirm the bi-directional connection through the modem and no
further testing should be required.
19. If a second modem is installed in the PDP-886, repeat steps 16 through 18.

PDP-886 TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION
Serial Digital Interface (SDI) connection is via BNC P2 (Sheet 1 of 4). Relay K1
provides power-off by-passing of the input signal to the output BNC, P1. Receiver
device U21 performs automatic gain and cable equalization. Integrated circuit U22
performs the digital re-clocking function and provides a re-clocked serial digital output
(pins 24 and 25) along with a recovered clock output (pins 22 and 23). The
phase-locked loop error voltage appears at TP3, and may be adjusted by RV7. Serial
to parallel conversion is accomplished by U23. This 10-bit multiplexed (Y,Cr,Cb) signal
is connected to the dual multiplexer device, U8. This Complex Programmable Logic
Device (CPLD) has the following functions:
1. Sync separator: produces vertical sync and provides field identification to the
micro-controller on the mother board. Also provides horizontal and vertical reset
to the address generator CPLD, U9.
2. Dual Multiplexer/Keyer: multiplexes luminance (Y) data from ROM (U4/U5) with
fixed color difference (Cr,Cb) data to produce a Closed Caption waveform. This
digital Closed Caption signal is then multiplexed (keyed) into the digital
bit-stream during the appropriate line: NTSC = line 21, PAL = line 22.
Waveform synthesis is handled by the address generator CPLD, U9. It receives Closed
Caption data from the micro-controller and generates the appropriate addresses for the
waveform ROMs. (NTSC waveform ROM = U4, PAL waveform ROM = U5.)
The digital video bit-stream has now been modified with the insertion of line 21/22
Closed Caption data. The parallel video data is next applied to U7, the EDH (Error
Detection and Handling) processor. Here, a new EDH checksum is added to reflect the
modification to the video data. Finally, U6 provides the parallel to serial conversion.
SDI output appears at BNCs J1 and P1.
Parallel digital data from the EDH processor is applied to the digital to analog
converter/encoder, U14. With a component digital input, this devices produces a
composite analog (NTSC/PAL) output. Reset generator U12 provides a reliable power-
8
PDP-886 TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION (CON'T)
up reset to this device. Diode D2 provides a stable reference voltage to the D-to-A
converter. Potentiometer RV2 serves as the output video level adjustment.
The newly converted analog signal is applied to the filter network L1/L2 and C32 thru
C35. This analog Closed Captioned video signal is buffered by amplifier U11A and
appears at BNCs J5 and J6. The buffered signal feeds two other circuits as well:
inverting amplifier U11B and the Closed Caption Decoder/Data Recovery ICs U16 and
U19, respectively. The inverted analog Closed Caption video signal is used by the
output amplifier/keyer built around U17. This phase-linear keyer inserts decoded
captions (from the decoder IC) into the video signal. The key signal and caption
luminance both originate in U16.
The dual micro-controllers, U2 and U3, are the heart of the PDP-886. Each have their
own RS-232/RS-422 data ports, their own (optional) modem, and their own 32k x 8
SRAM. The micro-controllers serve the following functions:
1. Dual Universal Asynchronous Receiver/Transmitters (UARTs): handle serial
Closed Caption data (RS-232/RS-422) from the caption computer(s). The
actual data signal interface is determined by the internal slide switches, SW1
and SW2. Integrated circuit U1 converts the incoming data to the CMOS signal
levels required by the micro-controllers.
2. Front panel interface: most are handled by U3. It monitors various front panel
controls, specifically the "By-Pass" switch (SW4), rotary encoder "Decode"
select (SW3), "Test" switch (SW5), and baud rate select switches (SW6).
Switch inputs are de-bounced by U20. U3 also controls the LCD panel to report
encoder mode, decoder mode, video standard, and baud rate.
4. Internal device control: controls the CC Decoder IC (U16) and the EDH
processor (U7) via two-wire IIC interface bus. Bus enable/disable is handled by
U30.
9
PDP-886 TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION (CON'T)
External device addressing (port expansion) is handled by the 3-to-8 decoders U4, U5,
U6, and U7.
MODEM
The MoDems, U8 and U9, are completely self-contained; they connect to a telephone
line and provide CMOS level data to the micro-controller. They also support the
monitoring functions for Ring Indication (RI), Off-Hook (OH), and Carrier Detect (CD).
These indications appear at the front panel LED packs DS1 and DS2.

PDP-886 MODEM INSTALLATION
The internal modems for the PDP-886 (Link #MODEM-OP-2) can be easily installed in
the field. Simply remove the cover from the PDP-886 and locate the modem sockets on
the mother board (U8 and U9). They are directly adjacent to the telephone RJ-11
connectors on the rear panel. Please note the following:
3.) A cable tie is provided which should be secured around the modem module(s),
particularly if the unit will be subject to mechanical shock or vibration (such as
would be encountered in a remote-production truck).

PDP-886 SOFTWARE INSTRUCTION SET
Version 1.X
The PDP-886 can execute several instructions received from a personal computer via
the RS-232C link. Each instruction is listed below along with its hexidecimal equivalent
and a brief description of its function. The PDP-886 uses the same command protocol
as the Link analog and digital Closed Caption Encoders. However, the PDP-886
directly produces open captions without generating a Line 21 data waveform.

INSERTING YOUR TSID USING
THE PDR-885 and PDP-886
The PDR-885 and PDP-886 can be used to insert you TSID number that has
been assigned to your station. You must have the latest microprocessor
firmware to do this, which can be purchased from Link Electronics.
The PDR-885 and PDP-886 allow for encoding of XDS packets, where the TSID
resides, onto field 2 of the video stream. The PDR-885 and PDP-886 block incoming
XDS information if they are being used to encode XDS information. If wanting to retain
the current XDS information that is already encoded on the incoming video, and just add
your TSID number you will have to do one of the following:
1. Manually re-insert all of the XDS packets along with your TSID number
using a terminal program, such as HyperTerminal.
2. Use third party software, which is compatible with Link encoders, that
allows you to encode all of the XDS packets along with your TSID number.
The XDS information that currently encoded on the video will have to be
re-entered using the software.
3. If your third party software will encode the XDS packets you need, but not
the TSID number, you can do the following. Use the software to encode
the XDS packets you want, then use a terminal program, such as
HyperTerminal, to enter your TSID number.
Your TSID number is a 16bit value that has been assigned to you as a decimal or
hexadecimal number. In order to encode the TSID it will have to be converted to four
ASCII characters. This can be accomplished by doing the following:
22
1. Using Windows Calculator in scientific mode convert your decimal number
to a hexadecimal number. (If starting with a hexadecimal number skip to
step 2)
2. The hex number must be four digits, if it is not, leading zeros must be
added to make it a four digit number.
3. Treat your four digit hexadecimal number as four independent characters.
Using the chart below convert each hexadecimal character to its TSID
code character.
HEXADECIMAL CHARACTER TSID CODE CHARACTER
0 @
1 A
2 B
3 C
4 D
5 E
6 F
7 G
8 H
9 I
A J
B K
C L
D M
E N
F O
Examples:
TSID NUMBER = 2(decimal)
TSID NUMBER = 0x0002(hex with leading zeros)
TSID FOUR CHARACTER CODE = @@@B (these are the four characters that
would be enter when encoding your TSID number from a terminal program)
