Guide to Services, Eats, Emergencies and Entertainment

Brandywine Farm English Shepherd Gathering

Where to eat

Please note: Cranberry (where the hotels are) has every kind of generic chain restaurant you
could want. I concentrate here on the authentic local joints. There are few left in Cranberry, as
theyʼve been bulldozed out over the years.

Breakfast --

Highly recommend The Kountry Kitchen in Zelienople. A real small-town diner, no affectation
or irony. If you donʼt get called “Honey” here, you probably need to go to confession. Diner
fare, very cheap. I like the home fries. Often a wait on weekend mornings, especially if you
have a big group. Also open for lunch, closes at 4 on weekends, open for early dinner on
weeknights. On Main Street (Route 19).

Next door is the cafe at the Kaufman House, which is fine, and where people usually go when
the line is well out the door at the Kountry Kitchen.

If you are staying in Cranberry, I recommend Eat ʻnʼ Park. This is a local Pittsburgh chain that
is well known for its good service and fresh family-restaurant standards. Great breakfast/
brunch bar on weekends. Great coffee. Great pies. There is also Bob Evans, Perkins, and
Dennyʼs, but you know, why? None are as good or as good value as Eat ʻnʼ Park. Route 19,
just north of the on ramp for 79/76.

Do not eat at Kingʼs in Cranberry. Other Kingʼs in other parts of town are fine. But the one in
Cranberry, just ... donʼt. We really donʼt need to have anyoneʼs stomach pumped at our
Gathering.

Lunch/dinner:

Due north on Route 19 is Muddy Creek Barbeque. You can sit outside with your dog. We will
go there Friday night. Uber-casual, paper-plate, good barbeque and side dishes. Iʼm partial to
the ribs, haluski, and Muddy Creek potatoes. Friendly family establishment. You can BYOB.

Due south on Route 19 is the Log Cabin Inn. General steakhouse fare, and a bar. Very
popular locally, always a wait. The steaks and lamb are very good. I donʼt care for the pot
roast.
In Zelienople/Harmony --

The Kaufman house is the kind of place you take your Grandma on Sunday. The 1970ʼs has a
strong and sincere hold on decor and menu. I like the apricot chicken. Prices a bit high for the
value. Bar. On Main Street (Route 19).

Fisherʼs bar is a classic shot ʻnʼ a beer joint with good sandwiches and fries and bar-food
appetizers. Fish sandwich is huge. Usually something good on draught. On Main Street
(Route 19).

Harmony Inn has a great ambiance. You can sit outside with your dog and the patio area is
really lovely. Food is a matter of luck that night. Sometimes oneʼs luck can be very bad
indeed. Service is casual, meaning, the servers are pretty casual about getting around to you.
Usually something good on draught. (Mercer Road at Spring Street).

El Toro is good Mexican west of town next to the township airport. No liquor license. Good
service. (West Newcastle street to Route 288)

Best place for pizza is Montecelloʼs in the plaza north of town (on Route 19). They also have
buffets. Iʼve never thought much of the other pizza/sandwich shops in town.

Chinese buffet next to Montecelloʼs is fine.

In Cranberry --

House of Chen for Chinese. You wonʼt believe that a restaurant like this is located where it is.
Really good, authentic food and lovely decor. Gorgeous fishtanks indoors, gardens/koi ponds
outdoors. (Alas, no outdoor seating.) Good service. I love the eggplant and the hotpots.
Many fine vegetarian options. I love Mr. Chen. (Brandt Drive , across from the Auction Barn,
just off Route 19.)

Adult Beverages

Without getting into the Byzantine details of PAʼs liquor control laws (sigh).

You can buy wine or hard stuff at the state liquor stores in the Cranberry Mall or the plaza north
of Zelienople (next to Bi-Lo). Limited hours. No Sunday sales.

You can buy beer at the Save on Beer across from the Bi-Lo plaza, or at several package
stores in Cranberry -- but only by the case. No Sunday sales.

You can get a six-pack at a restaurant that sells them as such. Montecelloʼs in Cranberry
(Garden Plaza, Route 19). Iʼm not sure where else one can buy a six-pack. The
Commonwealth wants us to be moderate in our drinking, so it mandates that we buy beer by
the case and liquor only from Big Brother.
Groceries

In Cranberry --

Giant Eagle and Kuhnʼs in the Cranberry Mall, Route 19. Giant Eagle is more upscale. Kuhnʼs
is managed by our good friend Ray, more of a budget grocery.

Costco -- west of Route 19, behind the Dickʼs Sporting Goods.

There is a Walmart. There, I said it. It is always open.

In Zelienople --

The Bi-Lo in the plaza on Route 19 north of town is decent, though the produce is generally
meh at best. Great milk in glass bottles, pretty good “artisan” breads. Pick up some Amish roll
butter there to take home if you can keep it cool.

The Shop ʻnʼ Save in town is pretty nasty.

Dog Food

The best selection is at Burtonʼs Total Pet, in front of the Walmart in Cranberry, next to Pier
One.

Burtonʼs carries a wide range of mid-to-high-end commercial foods, and some frozen
commercial raw.

You can often get turkey backs and necks at the Bi-Lo north of Zelienople, for about ..79-.99 a
pound. Walmart in Cranberry will sometimes have organ meats, pork necks, and beef tongue
marked down, and cheap chicken. Giant Eagle and Kuhnʼs typically have nothing but higher-
end cuts of meat.

If you feed homemade raw, let me know ahead of time. I can sell you, at cost, some of the
locally-sourced ground beef (trim, hearts, liver, etc.) that we use, so you donʼt have to pack so
much. There will also be chicken backs from our own chickens. I may have RMBs and other
meat available, depending on when Iʼve been to the slaughterhouse and what they have for
me.

There is also a Petco in the Cranberry Mall and a Petsmart on Route 228 in Cranberry.
Entertainment

If you are in town for extra time, or have travel companions who arenʼt endlessly entertained by
hanging out and talking dog ...

The restored Strand movie theater in Zelienople runs live shows and second-run or old
movies on weekends only. The show for the weekend of the gathering is Shrek.

There is a multiplex cinema in the Cranberry Mall.

Moraine State Park, immediately north, offers hiking, bike trails, fishing, boating. Boat and bike
rentals available. McConnellʼs Mill State Park, just west of Moraine State Park, has a historic
mill, climbing and bouldering, and rugged scenic hiking. Beautiful wildflowers. We have trail
maps and topos.

Pittsburgh has a wide variety of big-city attractions, including:

The Carnegie Museums (Art, Natural History, Science, Childrenʼs and the Andy Warhol
Museum)

Phipps Conservatory

Pittsburgh Zoo and Aquarium

The National Aviary

Pittsburgh Pirates baseball (home this weekend and Monday, playing the Mets)

The South Side (bar scene at night, great restaurants during the day), Mount Washington
(amazing views, restaurants, ride the Incline), and the Strip (food markets by day, bar scene by
night)

If you are eating in town, I can highly recommend Mallorca (Spanish) on the South Side for
lunch or dinner (pricey, but more than worth every penny, and a bargain at lunch), Piperʼs Pub
(South Side) for dinner/drinks, Pamelaʼs or Delucaʼs in the Strip for breakfast. Check out the
Pittsburgh Public Market (Strip) Friday - Sunday.

Most tourists to Pittsburgh are told to get a sandwich at Primantiʼs. If you just want to say you
did it, well, okay. I find them revolting. (Pittsburgh “tradition” of dumping the french fries right
in the sandwich or salad and then eating it like some feral he-beast -- beware!)

About two hours southwest of Brandywine Farm are the Frank Lloyd Wright houses
Fallingwater and Kentuck Knob. For some reason many visitors to the area make the trek.
Check with the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy for tour info. Nearby are Ohiopyle State
Park (hiking, climbing, whitewater) and Bear Run Nature Preserve (hiking). Gorgeous
wildflowers in June.
If you are staying for an extra day or so and want to do some of these non-dog activities, let
me know in advance, and we may be able to dogsit while you explore. We have kennel space,
but it is limited.

Gas

Gas up in Zelienople; the service stations on Main Street (Route 19) generally have the best
gas prices in the area.

Veterinarian

I will alert our veterinarian in Cranberry that we are having this event. They are open until 7:30
pm Friday, noon Saturday, are not open Sunday.

Gardenʼs Veterinary Hospital, 9087 Marshall Road, Cranberry Twp., 16066

724-772-1870

Theyʼve been caring for our dogs since 1995, and their practice manager owns one of our ES
puppies. They wonʼt tell you that you own a border collie (unless you do.)

Emergency Veterinarian

Do not go to the emergency vet on Camp Horne Road (Pbgh Veterinary Specialty &
Emergency Center). They will rob you blind and provide incompetent care. I am not
exaggerating. They are paying for their lobby latte machine and MRI by soaking the
emergency clients. They suck.

We use Rainbow Veterinary Hospital, in West NoDamnPlace, PA, for after-hours emergencies.
It is about 43 minutes from Brandywine Farm and 35 minutes from Cranberry.

Human Hospital

UPMC Passavant Cranberry, 1 Saint Francis Way, Cranberry 16066.

Generally considered a better emergency department than Butler Memorial.

If you cut off your own head or come down with Ebola and need a much better ED, you are
going by ambulance. I recommend asking for either Presby or Mercy Hospitals. I recommend
against this general course of action.
