Description
The Motwane make Diagnostic Insulation Tester (Model:
5K PI) is a microprocessor based insulation tester for
diagnosing insulation of all types of electrical equipments
in electrical utility substations and industries.
The 5K PI measures the insulation resistance of electrical
equipment by applying a known test voltage and
measuring the leakage current. The measured insulation
resistance is then displayed on the LCD. It has automatic
test sequence to perform industry standard tests such as
Polarization Index (PI), Dielectric Absorption Ratio (DAR),
Dielectric Discharge (DD), Step Voltage (SV) and BDV
Test.
The 5K PI features a easy to read backlit LCD which is
viewable in all light conditions. Information displayed
includes Insulation Resistance, Leakage Current,
Capacitance, Test Voltage and Timers. In addition to this
the elapsed time is continuously displayed on the screen,
eliminating the need of separate timer.
5K PI's two way power supply option (AC Mains / Battery
operation), adjustable test voltage (250~5000V) and
portable design allows the instrument to be used in wide
variety of applications.
Applications
The 5K PI is designed for testing the insulation of high
voltage electrical equipments. The wide range of test
voltage starting from 250V to 5000V, allows testing of low
voltage electrical equipments also. The Diagnostic Test
modes provide valuable information on the condition of
insulation.

Benefits
¤ Automatic IR (or Leakage Current) Test
The test voltage (250~5000V) and test duration (upto
99:59 mm:ss) is selected. The 5K PI will show the IR
(or Leakage Current) value during testing though out
the selected test duration. At the end of the test
scrolled display of IR, leakage current and
capacitance is available on the LCD.

¤ Diagnostic Modes
Polarization Index (PI) Test
PI test can be run at user specified test voltage and
timers (T1 & T2). The scrolled display of PI, IR@T1,
IR@T2, Leakage Current and Capacitance is
available at the end of test. PI test helps in assessing
the amount of moisture and dirt present in the
insulation.
Dielectric Absorption Ratio (DAR) Test
DAR test can be run at user specified test voltage and
has three timers (T1, T2 & T3). The scrolled display of
DAR, PI, IR@T1, IR@T2, IR@T3, Leakage Current &
Capacitance is available at the end of test.
Dielectric Discharge (DD) Test
DD test can be run at user specified test voltage and again
has three timers (T1, T2 & T3). The scrolled display of DD,
DAR, PI, IR@T1, IR@T2, IR@T3, Leakage Current &
Capacitance is available at the end of test.DD test
measures the level of dielectric absorption of the
insulation. This test can be used for testing insulation
resistance of multi layer insulation system.
Step Voltage (SV) Test
SV test measures IR at five equal voltage steps upto a
final test voltage which is selected by user. The
voltage is stepped up in 1/5 increments of selected
test voltage for user defined time interval. The SV test
helps in assessing the level of micro-cracks and holes
present in the insulation.
Break Down Voltage (BDV) Test
BDV test helps us in knowing the withstand capability
of the insulation. The test voltage is applied to the
insulation which it has to be kept without a breakdown.
¤ Auto Discharge Facility
After each test, the 5K PI automatically discharges the
test voltage available on the test object. An audible
buzzer warns the operator for safety against shock
hazards during discharging.
¤ Fully Auto Ranging
The instrument is fully auto ranging and automatically
adjusts to the best suited range.
¤ Self Calibration Check
The 5K PI undergoes a self calibration check at every
start up. This self calibration check ensures reliable
reading with high repeatability for each
measurement.
¤ Heavy duty operation
The 5K PI has robust ABS casing which is suitable for
heavy duty operation in harsh environmental
condition. Its compact design, reinforced double
insulation, self carrying handle and rugged carrying
bag make it suitable for field operation.
¤ Voltage Measurement
The 5K PI can also be used as a voltmeter to measure

¤ Battery Operation
The 5K PI has internal rechargeable Li-Ion battery.
With a fully charged battery one can get a back up of
approx. 8 hours on typical load of 10GΩ. It has fast
charging time of less than 4 hours. Its battery can also
be charged during testing.
Data Handling & Analysis
¤ Memory Storage
5K PI has internal memory storage of 1000 test
results. As such, it can store the test results in
Automatic IR test, Diagnostic test as well as voltage
measurement tests.
¤ Communication Port
Optically isolated RS232 communication port is
provided for computer interface. An optional RS232 to
USB converter can be provided for connecting 5K PI
to USB ports on PC.
¤ Application Software
5K PI comes with advanced DOT NET based
software operating under Windows
Vista/XP/2000*.Using this software, test results can
be retrieved from 5K PI and can be stored on PC for
future analysis and report generations. These test
report can also be exported in Microsoft Word, Excel
and PDF format also.
