JAWAHARLAL NEHRU SCHOLARSHIPS FOR DOCTORAL STUDIES

Information Sheet for Applicants

A. CATEGORIES OF SCHOLARSHIPS
The scholarships are available to the following categories of students:

( 1) Indian Nationals for Ph.D. study in India; and

( 2) Nationals of other Asian countries for Ph.D. study in India.

B. AREAS OF SPECIALISATION/SUBJECT
A candidate may apply for scholarship in any one of the following areas of specialization:

1. Physical Sciences 8. Comparative Studies in Religion & Culture

2. Chemical Sciences 9. Indian History & Civilization
3. Mathematical Sciences 10. Sociology
4. Biological Sciences 11. Economics
5. Computer Sciences 12. Jawaharlal Nehru Studies
6. Engineering Sciences
7. Environmental Sciences

C. ELIGIBILITY CONDITIONS
At the time of submission of the application for scholarship, a candidate should
1. hold a FIRST Class Post-graduate degree with a minimum 60% marks in aggregate.

2. already be registered/admitted for Ph.D. degree with a recognized University/Institution in India.

Those who have applied for registration and have not yet been registered at the time of submission
of application, are not eligible to apply.

3. not be above 35 years of age at the time of applying.

4. be a full-time Ph.D. Scholar.

5. have valid GATE /NET score.

D. DURATION OF SCHOLARSHIP
Upto 2 years.

E. VALUE OF SCHOLARSHIP FOR BOTH THE CATEGORIES

(a) Maintenance allowance including Tuition fee Rs. 12,000 per month
(b) Annual contingent expenses
for study tours within India, books, stationery, thesis costs, etc. Rs. 15,000 per annum
F. UNDERTAKING
The selected candidate will be required to give an Undertaking (in the attached format) to observe
the terms and conditions of the scholarship.

G. LAST DATE
Completed application form together with all the necessary enclosures should reach Administrative
Secretary, Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Fund, Teen Murti House, New Delhi-110 011 on or
before 15th June. The candidates are advised to send their applications as soon as possible. The
Fund will not be responsible for any postal delays in reaching the application by the due date.
The Selection Committee’s decision to call a candidate for interview or select a candidate for
scholarship will be final and no representation in this regard will be entertained.
Shortlisted candidates will be called for interview at the end of November or early December. The
Scholarship commences from January every year.

H. ENCLOSURES
The candidates should ensure that the following documents are securely attached seriatim to the
Application Form before despatch :

(1) A passport size photograph to be pasted on the form.

(2) An attested copy of Ph.D. registration/admission letter from the College/University.

(3) A synopsis of not more than 1500 words or about 3 pages of 1.5 spaced text.

(4) University Doctoral Monitoring Committee’s report or Ph.D. Supervisor’s report .

(5) Attested copies of Postgraduate degree, marksheet and all other educational certificates/
degrees showing marks obtained and the date of birth.

Incomplete, unsigned or application forms from ineligible candidates or without the necessary
enclosures are liable to be rejected. Please read the eligibility conditions carefully and apply
only if you fulfil all the conditions.

The Application Form for Jawaharlal Nehru Scholarships can be

downloaded from the website. The fee of Rs. 100/- in cash
should be deposited at any branch of State Bank of India SB A/c
No. 30666380015 and the deposit slip should be sent along with
the completed application form to reach the Fund Office latest
by 15th June. The fee may be paid also by Postal Order/Demand
Draft drawn in favour of “Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Fund”
payable at New Delhi and should be sent along with the com-
pleted application form.

1. I shall devote my full time to the study/research for which I have been awarded the Jawaharlal Nehru
Scholarship and shall not do any other paid work or receive another scholarship or any other grant from
any other source during the tenure of this scholarship. I shall not pursue any course of study other than for
which I have been awarded the Jawaharlal Nehru Scholarship.

2. I shall abide by the instructions issued by the Fund Office from time to time regarding my studies/work.

3. I shall not accept any honorarium or financial assistance from any agency or source without the prior
written permission of the Fund Office. If at any time the Fund Office decides to give such permission I shall
not hesitate to surrender the whole or part of any such honorarium or money received by me to the Fund
Office, if required by the Fund Office to do so.

4. I shall not discontinue my studies/work without completing its tenure.

5. I am in good health and fit to take up the study. I am not receiving continuous medical treatment for any
disease at present. I have been medically examined by a Medical Officer of the Government of
_________________________________________________ State/Union Territory and found fit to pursue
the studies. The Medical Certificate in original in the prescribed form is forwarded herewith to the Fund.

6. I am fully aware that the continuance of the scholarship is subject to satisfactory progress being made by
me in my studies. If there is any adverse report from an authority either in respect of my studies or conduct
or behaviour or if I absent myself from the studies for a considerable time, the Fund Office can cancel my
scholarship and also recover the amounts already spent on me. I am also aware that if my health does not
allow me to pursue the studies, the Fund Office can cancel my scholarship.
7. I have read the terms and conditions governing this scholarship and I shall abide by the same. In case of
breach of any term or condition by me, the Fund Office can cancel my scholarship and also recover from
me the amounts already spent on me.

8. I am fully aware that the Fund Office has the right to change the terms and conditions of the Scholarships
Scheme at any time whenever it feels necessary to do so and that I shall abide by the decision of the Fund
Office in the matter of interpretation and application of the terms and conditions of the Scheme to me.

9. I shall promptly refund to the Fund Office any overpayment made to me by the Fund Office.

10. I shall continue to remain in touch with the Fund Office during my studies in India and, in particular, shall
keep it informed of :

(a) any change in my address even if only temporary.

(b) any injury, illness, loss or damage which I may suffer to my person or property.
(c) any legal action whether civil or criminal, actual or threatened, in which I may become involved.

11. I shall not engage in any activity of public nature likely to affect my studies adversely.

12. Condition for the continuance of the Scholarship : I am fully aware that the continuance of the
Scholarship will be subject to satisfactory progress reports obtained by me from my Supervisor/Institute
and I shall forward the same every six months to the Fund Office. If there is any adverse report from the
authority either in respect of studies, conduct, behaviour or in respect of health or if I abandon studies
for a considerable time, the Fund Office reserves the right to cancel the scholarship and also recover the
amounts spent on me. I shall neither give up the research nor abandon the research for any period that
is likely to extend the research beyond the stipulation of the Scholarship period. In case of my marriage
or pregnancy (as applicable), the Fund Office will not be liable to bear any extra cost.
