 Historic
Places
For more than 90 years, visitors to Steuben County have been
greeted by the Soldiers’ Monument in downtown Angola. Built
in 1917, the monument commemorates the men who fought in
the Civil War.
Columbia, the heroic-sized figure that stands atop the
70-foot-high monument, can be seen holding a flag and a
wreath of peace. The four lower statues represent the four
branches of service and are known as Infantryman at Parade
Rest, Cavalryman, Artilleryman and Sailor. Each side of the
monument features a plaque with the names of 1,278 Steuben
County men who enlisted for service.
A conglomeration of architectural styles, the Old Steuben
County Jail is also included in the National Register. The brick
and concrete structure, completed in 1877, cost $21,144 to
build and housed the jail, sheriff’s residence and office. At one
time, four-star General Lewis B. Hershey resided in the old jail
with his father, the sheriff.
One of five Steuben County buildings listed in the National
Register of Historic Places, the Steuben County Courthouse
is located on the southeast side of the public square in
Angola, the county seat. Built in 1868, the brick structure with
ornamental brackets under the cornice is trimmed in dark green
ivy in the summer.
Located at 313 E. Maumee St. in Angola, the Cline Memorial
House Museum is a memorial to Cyrus and Jennie Cline.

THE HERITAGE
AND HISTORY
OF THIS AREA
Cyrus Cline was the northeast Indiana district representative
to the United States Congress during the terms of Presidents
Taft and Wilson, from 1905-1917. The museum is furnished with
treasures from 1900 on.
The museum is open to the public on Sundays from 2 to
4 p.m., June 5 through Aug. 28 or by contacting the Steuben
County Historical Society at (260) 665-7447.
Powers Church is located 1/4 mile north of U.S. Highway 20,
nine miles east of Angola on Old Road 1. The church was built
in 1876 and regular services were held there until the 1920s.
Renovations began in 1976 and the church now features
original oak and butternut woodwork, kerosene lamps and an
original pump organ. Summer services are still being held.
Built in 1877, the Collins Schoolhouse housed students in
grades one through eight with one teacher until 1943.
Located on State Road 120 between Fremont and Orland,
the school is open Sundays from 2 to 5 p.m., June 5 through
Aug. 28. Call Sharridee Collins at (260) 667-7216 for more
information. Group tours are available by appointment.
See the stage where musical greats such as Kitty Wells
and Little Jimmy Dickens have performed. Buck Lake Ranch in
Angola features a gift shop and museum that displays 50 years

schedule of events. Buck Lake Ranch is located two miles
west of Angola, just north of U.S. Highway 20.
 Pokagon State Park INDIANA’S FINEST
A variety of recreational opportunities awaits you at
Pokagon State Park, Indiana’s most beautiful state park. Located
on State Road 127, just off Old 27, Interstate 69 Exit 154 and near
Interstate 80/90 (the Indiana Toll Road), the park draws more than
750,000 people annually. Its 1,260 acres of picnic and hiking areas,
camping facilities and the highly acclaimed Potawatomi Inn promise
fun in Steuben County.
An annual entrance permit, good at any Indiana Department of
Natural Resources property, is $36 for Hoosiers and $46 for non-
residents. A Golden Hoosier passport for Indiana residents 65 and
older is $18.
The entrance fee into the park is $5 for Indiana residents and $7
for out-of-state vehicles. The fee is $2 per person on a bus, bicycle
or commercial van.
Pokagon is open 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily throughout the year.

facilities at Pokagon.
Camping
Number of sites: 273. Electrical sites: $25.50/night
Thursday-Saturday; $17.34/night, Sunday-Wednesday
and $28.56/night holiday weekends. Non-electrical sites:

Between Nov. 1 and April 1, campground 3 will be open for winter
camping and rest room shower facilities will be available.
Electric sites are $17.34 per night.
Youth tent camping also is available for $2 per person per night.
Aside from chaperones, all campers must be under the age of 21.
The capacity is 100, with 20 campers per site. A minimum of
$20 per site will be charged. Reservations are taken up to
six months in advance. A group camp also is available for up to 120

people April 1-Oct. 31. Facilities include 13 cabins with bunks, a
counselor’s cabin, craft room, two bunk houses, full kitchen and
dining hall, 1/2 basketball court and sand volleyball court. Camp
rental is $256.80 including tax per night. A reservation and deposit
are required and the camp may be reserved in advance up to one
year to the day.
Between Nov. 1 and Dec. 31, the group camp is available for
up to 40 people. Facilities are limited in the winter. Rates are $60
plus tax per night, plus $2 per person per night. A reservation and
deposit are required, and the camp may be reserved up to
one year in advance to the day.
All camping reservations can be made by calling toll-free
1-866-6CAMPIN. Hours November - April are noon to 6 p.m.
Monday - Friday and closed Saturday and Sunday.
Hours May - Oct. 31 are noon to 8 p.m. Monday-Thursday;
8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and 8 a.m. to noon Saturday.

Pokagon’s office is open daily 8:30 a.m to 4 p.m. and is
closed on Thanksgiving and Christmas. Call (260) 833-2012

Picnic Areas
Tables, grills, toilet facilities, playground equipment and play fields
are provided. All trash carried in must be carried out. Picnic areas are
first come first serve.
Winter Picnics
Winter picnicking is a popular activity at Pokagon. You may have
to clear your own snow, but tables, grills and playground equipment
are provided. Winter picnickers are reminded there are no trash
receptacles in the park. Garbage bags are available at the front gate
on weekends. Think reduce, reuse and recycle when packing your
picnic lunch.
Beach
Pokagon offers two beaches that are open for sunning or
swimming. Swim at your own risk sunrise to sunset.
There is no additional cost to visitors, although an entrance fee
is required to enter the park. The bathhouse at the main beach is
open Memorial Day through Labor Day 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily.
The main beach also features a concession stand, playground
equipment and a sand volleyball court. The beach in front of the
Potawatomi Inn is open at your leisure and also features
two sand volleyball courts.
Stables
Visitors may take a guided horse ride along some of the
park’s trails. Riders must be at least 8 years old and
52 inches tall. There is a weight limit of 250 pounds.

Shelter Houses
Five shelter houses are available at various rental fees.
These can be reserved up to one year in advance to the date
of arrival and as early as 48 hours prior to the date of arrival.
Prices range from $30 to $55. Smaller shelters have a capacity
of 40 people while the larger shelters hold up to 150. Call

Bikes
Bike rental is available at the Potawatomi Inn and the camp store
for $7 an hour, $20 for a half-day and $25 for all day. Pokagon offers
a 1.6 mile hard-surface bike trail.
Boat Rental
V-bottom row boats are available to rent for $6 per hour or $25
per day. Paddle boats are $8 per hour, plus $8 per each additional
hour. Kayak rental is $8 per hour or $30 per day plus tax. Double
kayaks are $16 per hour or $60 per day. Fishing boat rental is now
available for $30 the first hour, $10 per additional hour or $85 per
day for a 13-foot boat. A 14-foot boat is $40 per hour, $12 per
additional hour or $100 per day. Life jackets are required for all
types of boats. You may use one of the park’s free of charge or bring
your own approved boat cushion. The rental is located in front of the
Potawatomi Inn.
Pontoon boats are available Memorial Day weekend through
Labor Day. An advanced deposit is required. Contact the
Potawatomi Inn at (877) 768-2928 or (260) 833-1077 for
reservations and information.
Tour Lake James on the 1902 Electric Fantail Launch
replica “Lonidaw.” Tours begin in late May and continue through
September. Adults are $10; seniors $8 and children $5. Call the
Potawatomi Inn for a schedule.
Warming Center
From April to November, the warming center next to the toboggan
slide can be rented for $107 to $112.35. Its capacity is 75 people and
can be rented one year to the date of reservation. Tables and chairs
are provided, along with a small refrigerator and three deep sinks. For
reservations call 1-866-6CAMPIN or visit www.camp.IN.gov.
Nature Center
Pokagon’s Nature Center is open Monday through Friday from 1 to
5 p.m. and Saturday, Sunday and holidays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. during
the school year. Summer hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.
Interpretive nature programs are available on weekends, fall to spring
and daily during the summer. The schedule may be viewed

Refrigerated Toboggan
Traveling at speeds of 40 miles per hour, the refrigerated toboggan
takes about 40 seconds to reach the end of the track. The slide is
closed on Thanksgiving and opens from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. the day after
Thanksgiving. It’s open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Christmas Eve and closed
Christmas.
The slide has come a long way since the days when there was
nothing but a large hill for people to use. As time passed, a platform was
built, and then replaced by the raised tower of today. In the early 1970s,
the slide was refrigerated, making snow and cold weather unnecessary.
Riders can enjoy coffee, soup and sandwiches and a warm fire
at the warming center next to the toboggan run. It’s open when the
toboggan’s operating.
Slide hours are Friday 5 to 10 p.m.; Saturday 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.;
and Sunday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. During Christmas break, the slide is
open during the week extended hours from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. (except
Sundays and holidays, with hours from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.) Call the park

Park personnel may close the slide when temperatures fall to zero or
below.
Sleds are $10 per hour and hold up to four people. A driver’s license
is required as a deposit for every four toboggan rentals. You must rent
a park sled. On Friday evenings, Pokagon offers a “Friday Night Flight
Special” - rent two toboggans and get the third free.

Cross Country Skiing
At Pokagon, you don’t have to worry about bringing your own
equipment. Visitors may rent equipment at the Civilian Conservation
Corps shelter located by the north beach parking lot. The rental is open
when the snow conditions are favorable from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Saturday and Sunday only and during Christmas break. Ski rental is
$7 per hour per set for adults and $5 per hour per set for youth 15 and
under. A driver’s license is required as a deposit. If you have your own
skis, you may ski anytime.
Park trails have variable skill levels so even the beginner can feel at
ease while learning the sport. Cross-country skiers are encouraged to
take a few practice loops in front of the CCC shelter before setting out
on the three main, groomed trails.
The beginner (novice) trail is the easy to moderate trail, scattered
with slopes and gentle curves. It provides a variety of terrain and runs
through the woods and past the nature center where skiers can grab
a drink and short rest before returning to the shelter. The moderate
trail heads north over wooded hills, back along wetlands and past the
historic Spring Shelter. It then enters the hushed cover of an old pine
forest and back into the campgrounds toward the shelter, following the
sweeping landscape of open woods and winter-quiet campsites. For
the adventurous skier, we have a third trail, new in 2011. The advanced-
rugged loop departs from the far side of the moderate trail and heads
out to the rolling Bluebird Hills of trails 7 and 8 before returning to the
moderate trail.
All skiers must be off the trails 30 minutes before sunset. All persons
under 16 must be accompanied by an adult who is skiing, when renting
equipment. Skiers with rented equipment must stay on the marked,
groomed trails designed for them.

MORE THAN 101 LAKES
I
f you like boating, Steuben County is for you! With more than
101 lakes and three navigable creeks and rivers, there are water
activities for everyone.
People wanting to bring their speedboats to Steuben County will
find opportunities to fire up their engines on a handful of lakes where
high speed boating is allowed by Indiana law. Those lakes include
Clear Lake, Hamilton Lake, Lake James, Snow Lake, Jimmerson Lake,
Lake Gage, Crooked Lake, Lake Pleasant, Big Turkey Lake and Lake
George. (Be advised on Lake George, boat operation at speeds
greater than 10 mph is not allowed between the hours of
6:30 p.m. and 10 a.m.)
These lakes either have public access sites where people may
launch boats for free or privately-owned ramps where boat launching
is available for a fee.
There are a number of small lakes, such as Fox, Pigeon, Ball, Loon,
Big Bower, Golden, West Otter, Fish, Marsh and Beaver Dam, where
there are public access sites.
However, speeds are either limited to less than 10 mph or
no gas-powered motors are allowed. On Fox Lake, where there

is a public access site, skiing is allowed between 1 and 4 p.m.
There are a number of points where people can drop canoes or
row boats in Fish Creek, Pigeon Creek and Fawn River in Steuben
County. In the heat of the summer, these bodies of water meander
their way to where they feed into larger rivers.
Power boats are available for rent from some marinas. There are
pontoon and small boat rentals available at Pokagon State Park
on Lake James. Canoe rentals are available on Pigeon Creek from
Pigeon River Canoe-n-Camp on County Road 325 West near
Golden Lake.
The county’s lakes and streams are regulated by
Indiana laws, which are enforced by the Indiana Department of
Natural Resources and the Steuben County Marine Patrol Division of
the Steuben County Sheriff’s Department.
In addition, many of the county’s more populous lakes have
associations that actively monitor things such as water quality,
boating and building activity.

Fishing
Steuben County is an angler’s paradise. With 101 lakes that vary
in depth, size and structure, just about every variety of fresh water
fishing can be enjoyed here.
There are scores of different fish to go after in Steuben County.
There is a very strong native fish population, plus the Indiana
Department of Natural Resources stocks many of the lakes and
streams in the county.
If there’s any one constant to Steuben County, it’s the lakes
and the fishing that occurs on them.
All year long anglers can be spotted out on the lakes,
either in boats, watching their lines, or standing above a hole cut
through the ice.
If you want to go for pan-fish, just about every lake in the county
supports strong populations of sunfish, blue gill and crappie. There
are perch in almost every lake, too. So, if you want to catch a mess
of fish for dinner or provide the little ones with hours of fishing
excitement, just about every lake will suffice.
Steuben County’s lakes are also well known for their bass
populations. Many tournament anglers seek out the coves, shoreline
structure and weed beds for large mouth bass. There are also some

decent spots to fish for smallies, too.
Like something a little larger? Well, there are plenty of spots to
give a try for northern pike or walleye, both through open water
and the ice. In fact, the state record pike came out of Clear Lake in
northeastern Steuben County. That fish weighed just over 30 pounds!
At Ball Lake you will find a nice population of trophy-sized
Tiger Muskie.
If trout fishing is more your style, we have a number of spots
to toss a fly or hook a kernel of corn in hopes of a rainbow. Trout
populations can be found in Clear Lake and Lake Gage and also in
Pigeon River.
Lake James can supply about every type of fishing imaginable,
except for trout. There’s also good fishing at Crooked, Snow and
Hamilton lakes. If you prefer a smaller lake, try Fox, Pigeon, Ball and
Marsh to name just a few.
If you need advice on which lake to fish and for what, just ask any
local bait dealer. They are always willing to share a little advice and
usually know what’s biting and where.
In addition, the Indiana Department of Natural Resources offers
information through its web site at www.in.gov/dnr/fishwild. Make
sure you have a valid Indiana fishing license — if applicable — before
you go fishing on one of our lakes.
 Natural Wonders
THE BEAUTY OF LAKES COUNTRY ABOUNDS
Wing Haven, part of ACRES Land Trust, a nonprofit
organization, is open to nature enthusiasts daily, with special events
and an open house scheduled the first Sunday of every month.
Just one of seven ACRES sites in Steuben County, Wing Haven is
a gorgeous acquisition. Located off State Road 127 North on County
Road 400 North, the acreage includes most of the Seven Sisters
Lakes, scenic trails, slopes and valleys. The property includes a log
home and outbuildings.
An art studio/visitor center is open to the public the first Sunday
of the month from 1 to 5 p.m. Wing Haven is ideal for hiking, nature
study and photography, in addition to meetings for area historical and
art societies, nature lovers and others.
The Woodland Bog is a 20-acre tract located near the intersection
of County Road 100 North and directly east of County Road 200
East. Dense mats of ferns give the area a unique tropical appearance
in summer. Red Osier Dogwood, quiet clear ponds, aspens and oaks
mark the site. Access is achieved by parking on County Road 100
North and walking along the fence row back to the woods. Please
respect private property.
Beechwood Nature Reserve is located near Little Otter Lake just
off State Road 127 North, north of County Road 500 North near
Angola. The tract offers a variety of habitats in a small area, including
stately beeches and ancient maples, cattails and fern hummocks.
Rolling meadows offer wide views in Steuben County’s lake country.
Ropchan Memorial Nature Reserve is located two miles east of
Orland north of State Road 120 on County Road 750 West. High
ridges of woodland surround a small glacial lake and then break to
the east in an expanse of tamarack forest with deep mats of living
sphagnum moss.

The Ropchan Wildlife Refuge is located along State Road 827
near County Road 500 North. Rolling glacial kames surround
Cemetery Lake with adjoining broad marshland of reeds, ferns and
tamarack. The area supports a mixture of plants and animals.
McClue Reserve, located on County Road 400 North, about one
mile east of State Road 127 North, is an 80 acre tract containing a
large variety of wildlife and birds. Marked trails and printed guides are
available. If a personally-guided tour is desired, this may be arranged
by contacting Pokagon State Park naturalist Fred Wooley at
260) 833-2012.
Although there is no admission, visitors are asked not to picnic,
camp or hunt in the reserve.
Other areas that are ideal for hiking include the Pigeon River State
Fish & Wildlife Area located south of Orland and south of State Road
120, west of State Road 327 North on County Road 300 North.
The Anspaugh Wildlife Habitat Trust Area is open to the public on
a limited basis. The 80 acre tract on Loon Lake south of County Road
100 North west of Loon Lake public access off Landis Road includes
lowland woods, wet meadows, shrub wetlands and lake frontage.
The Elizabeth Hanna Nature Reserve is located on the east shore
of Clear Lake. The Town of Clear Lake dedicated the six acres of
land to Elizabeth “Lib” Hanna in recognition of her dedication to the
preservation of wildlife areas.
Vistula Park, located in back of the Fremont Public Library off
State Road 120, features 56 acres, with nearly half in a natural state.
There’s a 10 foot wide paved trail, which meanders through a high
quality woodland and wetland complex. Picnic tables are provided.
The Fish Creek Trail recently opened in Hamilton. Access the
2.1 mile trail on the south side of Bellefountaine Road, across from
Gnagy Park.
