The ABCs of AT, IT & the IEP
Sean Smith, Associate Professor, Department of Special Education, University of Kansas,

This session will focus on how educators and families can work together to further integrate
technology tools/solutions into the lives of students with special needs. Technology is
becoming a critical tool in our daily lives and thus, should be the same in our educational
environments. Participants will leave with tools and a confirmed process to follow that will
enhance technology consideration and implementation.
Session Takeaways:
• Participants will understand how critical further parent and professional
engagement/planning is to the technology integration process.
• Participants will understand the Principles of Universal Design for Learning and how they
apply to further implementation of technology into the lives of those with special needs.
• Participants will understand how interactive technology tools (e.g., video, audio, Web 2.0
solutions) can be used to alter educational outcomes for students with disabilities.

OK, I know my student or son/daughter could benefit from technology, now what? This
session will explore processes in place, available tools/solutions, and what is possible when
we integrate the principles of Universal Design for Learning in our educational planning and
implementation. Participants will discuss and consider how to further extend effective
practices, how to connect needs with technology tools and ways to further engage others in
meaningful technology use.

2. Fund Development 101 Paris B


Richard Tollefson, President, The Phoenix Philanthropy Group, and Joyce Millard Hoie,
Executive Director, Raising Special Kids, Phoenix, AZ
Richard Tollefson, from The Phoenix Philanthropy Group will address the key issues,
challenges, and opportunities in nonprofit fundraising. There will be opportunity for Q&A and
Region 5’s very own Joyce Millard Hoie will also participate in the presentation, providing her
own insight and experiences with fund development for Raising Special Kids, Arizona’s
Parent Training and Information Center!
Session Takeaways:
• Increased knowledge of nonprofit fund development issues
• Strategies for Parent Centers to consider in enhancing development skills

In this fun-filled session participants get a chance to hear from representatives of NICHCY
and CADRE who will provide links to new resources and provide general updates about their
work as TA&D Centers! And, we will be showcasing online videos that are relevant to topics
such as disability, change, inclusion, education, technology, and nonprofit management.
Come ready to discuss and share with your peers!

• Learn about current Technical Assistance and Dissemination Network's resources, with
opportunity for Q&A
• Opportunity for peer-to-peer sharing of current online video resources with other Region 5
Parent Centers
