MY AREAS OF FOCUS FOR WARD 3
• Our Roadways: These continue to deteriorate, reaching a point
where retailers tell me it's having a negative impact on business . I
will work with the Department of Public Works and citizens to make
effective road repair a priority.
• Bridge Street School: If we are to have a vibrant downtown, we
need a vibrant downtown elementary school. It is a key anchor of
our community. We must keep it open .
• Sustainable Northampton Plan: I support infill when it enables indi-
vidual homeowners to add a unit or two to their properties and
make better use of existing structures. I have concerns when infill is
of such a scale that it paves over valuable downtown greenspace,
causes parking and traffic problems, and disrupts our neighbor-
hoods.
• The Fairgrounds: This is an important economic engine, and I want
the redevelopment there to succeed. The process has not been
without problems, however. Some abutters are rightly concerned
about the management of stormwater on the property.
• The Meadows: This has been a productive agricultural zone since
the earliest days of the city. It is not primarily a recreational area .
Farmers are right to be concerned about the safety of the public
around heavy farm equipment, and to want to protect their crops
from damage by ATVs, bikes, pedestrians and dogs.
• Traffic Calming: Trucks should not be a frequent sight on narrow res-
idential streets, and cars need to travel at speeds that don't put pe-
destrians at risk.
• Island Road : I appreciate the value of the Marina, and I also appreci-
ate how traffic has impacted its neighbors. I will work hard to find a
satisfying resolution to the conflicts there .
• Walter Salvo House and Cahill Apartments : Angela Plassmann, our
former City Councilor, made a special effort to listen to and advocate
for the less powerful. In particular, she was able to achieve improve-
ments for residents in the city's Housing Authority properties. I
pledge to build on this work.
