PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
Psychological Consultant
August 2009-Present
I review disability claims processed by the N.C. Department of Health and Human
Services that allege mental impairments. I then recommend a disposition based on
qualification for benefits from the Social Security Disability or Adult Medicai
d programs. Adult disability evaluations are based on a person's capability to p
erform meaningful work. Children's disability determination is focused on impair
ment in age-appropriate activities at school and home. I am also responsible for
training Disability Examiners on a variety of mental health-related topics incl
uding the ordering and use of psychological testing; interpreting mental status
evaluations; evaluating for malingering and providing updates in the categorical
classification and diagnostic features of mental illnesses.

I was responsible for the delivery of mental health services to10, 000 military
personnel at Fort Knox, KY with a special emphasis on treating soldiers returnin
g from Iraq and Afghanistan. I supervised a staff of 19 that included Psychologi
sts, Psychiatrists, Psychiatric Nurse Practitioners, Social Workers and Psycholo
gical Technicians and carried an active caseload. My clinic conducted routine ps
ychological assessments, fitness for duty evaluations and disability examination
s. We also provided individual therapy, group therapy, an Intensive Outpatient P
rogram for PTSD and crisis intervention. I took the lead role in providing ment
al health oriented preventive education to my community, which included classes
on suicide prevention, family reintegration after deployment and psychological c
onsultations. For my efforts, I was appointed to the Honorable Order of Kentucky
Colonels by the Governor for providing aide to Soldiers of the Commonwealth of
Kentucky.

I served as the Mental Health Team Leader for a Task Force of approximately 900
soldiers in and around the city of Samarra, Iraq. I provided short-term counseli
ng, Fitness for Duty Evaluations, preventive education and Critical Incident Str
ess Management in support of a wide range of issues from deployment related stre
ss to line of duty deaths. I also supervised one Psychological Technician and ro
utinely consulted with Physicians and Senior Managers on the treatment and depos
ition of their soldiers. During this deployment I was promoted and received awar
ds for my combat service in a remote location.
Staff Psychologist
November 2004-December 2005
I was a staff member within the Department of Behavioral Health, Ireland Army Co
mmunity Hospital, Fort Knox, KY. I conducted intake interviews, mental status ev
aluations, fitness for duty evaluations and psychological testing for diagnostic
and forensic purposes. My duties also included individual and group psychothera
py, primary preventive education, crisis intervention and reviewing cases with P
sychological Technicians while working under the supervision of a Licensed Clini
cal Psychologist.
528th Medical Detachment (Combat Stress Control)
January 2001-November 2004
I served as Detachment Psychologist and later Commanding Officer of one of only
four Combat Stress Control Detachments in the U.S. Army. My primary responsibil
ity was to be prepared to provide Disaster Mental Health Services anywhere in th
e world on 18 hours notice. I supervised a staff of 24 providers and technician
s which included Psychiatrists, Social Workers and Occupational Therapists. We p
rovided psychiatric triage, short-term interventions, Critical Incident Stress M
anagement and preventive education during operational tours of Bosnia-Herzegovin
a (2001-2002) and Iraq (2003-2004). We accomplished this by establishing drop-in
clinics and by traveling to wherever our customer may be. When not deployed; my
detachment provided training in a variety of mental health related subjects to
the 42,000 personnel of the Fort Bragg community. I was formally recognized for
having no completed suicides at the end of my tour of Bosnia and for having a 98
% Return to Duty rate while supporting combat operations in Iraq.

I returned to active Army status and completed an APA Accredited Clinical Psycho
logy Internship at Eisenhower Army Medical Center, Fort Gordon, GA. This program
emphasized Community Mental Health and included major rotations in Psychologica
l Assessment, Health Psychology and Child Clinical Psychology.
Clinical Specialist II
May 1998-May 1999
I worked part-time for Protocall Services, Inc. in Portland, OR while working on
my doctorate. Protocall was both the Metro Portland crisis line and a for profi
t company. I conducted telephone intakes, evaluation and crisis intervention ser
vices for consumers of national employee assistance programs, community mental h
ealth agencies and managed care networks. I evaluated and intervened with people
in suicidal and homicidal crisis, assessed level of dangerousness, notified the
authorities and provided pre-certification for people requiring hospitalization
.
Human Resources Manager
May 1997-January 1998
I deployed to Sarajevo, Bosnia-Herzegovina for peacekeeping duty as part of the
Joint Civil-Military Task Force. I served as military staff specialist on Human
Resource Management and I provided additional support to members of the Internat
ional Organization/Non-governmental Organization communities. I also designed a
nd implemented a preventive mental health program for military family members pr
ior to our deployment.

I worked 32 hours per week at the Community Mental Health Service, Bayne-Jones A
rmy Hospital, Fort Polk, Louisiana while earning my masters degree. I was respon
sible for intake interviews, psychological testing, individual and group psychot
herapy, supervision of psychological technicians, primary prevention classes and
Critical Incident Stress Debriefings.

January 1983- September 1992
I served for 10 years with the United States Army in Japan, Korea and the United
States. I had one year's experience as director of an outpatient substance abus
e and preventive education program and three years' experience with job placemen
t and career development counseling. I gained experience in various direct super
visory positions of increasing responsibility. The largest work group I supervis
ed had 30 personnel, which included Soldiers, Department of the Army Civilians a
nd Japanese Civilian employees. I gained additional experience in community serv
ices administration, information systems management, technical writing, strategi
c planning, budgeting and teaching.
