DAY ONE
Joseph Receives a Special Coat
Big Idea: Remember to treat others the way you would like
to be treated.
Lesson:
Enter Tent that is set up for the lesson on “Joseph Receives a
Special Coat”
How did you feel (child who did not receive a piece of candy)
when everyone received a piece of candy and you were left
out? Did it make you feel bad? (Give them a piece).
Can you say this verse with me: "Do unto others as you
would have them do unto you?" Matthew 7:12.
Lesson:
How many of enjoy taking a trip? You pack all that you will
need (open the suitcase and take out items as you talk).
Let’s see…you pack a toothbrush, toothpaste, socks, shirt,
pants, book, bible (I hope so), some candy, underwear
(stinky). You dad even takes a big map so he does not get
lost (show map).
After driving for what seems like a long time, do you get
tired of the long journey…maybe even complaining just a
little? Normally, when you take a trip, you will ride in a car a
long, long time, eat snacks, and ask 100 times how long will
it be before you will be there. You get bored and tired of
driving and are impatient when it takes too long. You might
stare out the window and count all the red cars, then the
blue cars, then the Fords or Buicks. You play hand games
and if you have a TV in you car you watch some movies.
Your mom tells you for the 10th time not to ask any more
how long it will take. You probably like it best when you stop
to eat at McDonald (Show Happy meal) or some restaurant.
Mmmm good! You are satisfied for a while now.
Imagine how Joseph must have felt on the long trip that he
took to get to Egypt. It was hot, he got dust all over him, he
was sweaty, and he may not have been given much food to
eat or water, or a bath. He wondered where he was going,
and felt sick worrying about his dad. Did Joseph complain?
No, the Bible does not tell us that he did. He had a good
attitude.
Lesson:
Rules, rules, rules, who enjoys being told what to do all the
time? Make your bed, brush your teeth, put your dishes in
the sink, don’t spill your milk, do your homework, no TV until
your practices are over, go to bed, detention if you get three
marks against you, raise your hand, please don’t talk. Do
these things sound familiar?
Rules are for a reason. They are a period of training for us. If
we are not trained on how to do a job or have any guidelines
we will do what we want. We may eat candy all day, watch
TV all day, play on the computer all day, and no one would
teach us anything. We would have a difficult time getting a
job because we never learned read, write, and spell.
How many really enjoy eating a large meal and being with
lots of friends? It is fun! You catch up on what has been
happening in their lives, you talk and laugh and reflect on
some old past stories. You eat some, and then again later
eat more. You run and play and look at their new games
they have. You get lots of hugs from family members –
maybe more than you really want - however you endure it
all- even the kisses. The adults talk adult talk and laugh like
kids you may think. Everyone listens as your aunt or uncle
share about their vacation. They all want to hear how many
games you won this school year. Maybe, some have
something sad to tell and everyone encourages them and
tells them it will be alright. It is just a good old time with all
your family. If it is Christmas, you may exchange gifts; if it
happens to be Eater, you all have a large egg hunt.
Can you imagine how excited Joseph must have been to see
his family after so many years? He was elated and hugged
them and gave them the best of the land. God had blessed
him, and he wanted to share that with his family. Joseph did
not want to hold a grudge against his brothers for what they
did; that would spoil all their good times together. He
forgave them.
