Château Trotanoy
The Trotanoy vineyard comprises just 7.5 hectares positioned partly on the Pomerol plateau, partly on
the slope to the west. The lower parts on the west-facing slope are rich in a dark clay which characterises
much of the Pomerol appellation, whereas those parts higher up contain much more gravel. The subsoil
contains gravel and sand, and deeper still is the crasse de fer, the rock-hard layer of iron-rich soil which
lies beneath many of these Libournais vineyards. At the centre sits the chateau, where Jean-Jacques
resides, a rather modest but attractive house dating from the late 19th Century. The vines that surround
it are 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc, and as the majority survived the devastating frost of 1956
they have a venerable age, approximately 40 years on average.
Like Petrus, the vineyard of which is a little larger than that of Trotanoy, the harvest here may be finished
in less than two days, even if the pickers are restricted to working in the afternoon after the warmth of
the day has lifted the morning dew. The hand-picked fruit is delivered to the cellars, where it is vinified
in small concrete vats for up to ten days, followed by a week of maceration on the skins. Up until 2007
it was oenologist Jean-Claude Berrouet that oversaw operations in the cellars, as he also did at Petrus,
but with his retirement he has been replaced by Eric Murisasco here and at the other Moueix proper-
ties except for Petrus, where Jean-Claude’s son Oliver has taken over. The vinification here is handled in
much the same way as Petrus; it sounds wrong to describe it in this way, but we should remember that
although Petrus and Trotanoy are separate estates, under different administrations, they are in truth
under the control - as far as viticulture and vinification are concerned - of one man, Christian Moueix.
Perhaps one of the most notable differences between the two estates is that whereas Petrus sees 100%
new oak each year, the barrels at Trotanoy are typically only one-third to one-half new each vintage, and
the wines is kept within typically for 18 months prior to bottling.

Vintage report:
1996: Following a wet and mild winter, a hot and dry June ensured rapid and
uniform flowering, raising hopes for a plentiful crop. Harvest of the Merlot from the
right bank began on September 16th, and lasted as always for several weeks.

Fresh, characterful, expressive, and the immediate impression is of a wine that

is a success, taking into account the quality of this vintage for the region. The
palate follows through, showing a fine presence, with a delicious, sappy, rounded
character. It has a little weight, shows a touch of grip at the finish, and remains
fresh and very complete throughout.

2001: Uncommonly warm weather in early February had the sap rising, potential
buds swelling, and some vines even pushing out a leaf or two. The latter weeks
of February saw the weather cool, the vines having decided to wait instead for
warmer weather and the buds eventually broke out in March. July was hot and
damp, followed by a wet August. September was dry, and so the grapes remained
healthy, maturing slowly.

This is divine. On the palate, behind a layer of berry fruit rubbed with vanilla,
there is a melding of great character with fine elegance, with great style, although
still showing a rather raw structure at present. Delightful and well-bred wine.

La Mondotte is located on the eastern part of the Saint-Emilion plateau next to Troplong-Mondot. This 4.5
hectare vineyard is an absolute gem. Its outstanding terroir (clay limestone soil with very silty clay and a
rocky subsoil) has all the natural qualities to produce very great wine.
Excellent hydric regulation encourages the vines to sink their roots deep into the soil. The superb sun
exposure and fine natural drainage due to the steep slope make this a very early-maturing terroir. 233

PAU I L L A C
Chateau L atour,
Pa u i l l a c 1 e r G r a n d C r u C l a s s é
Although viticulture did not come to dominate the landscape of the Mé-
doc until the early 18th Century, once the Dutch engineers had drained
the marshland and exposed the gently rolling hills of gravel so suited to
the vine, that does not mean there is no history here before that time.
Chateau Latour is a prime example, as although the extensive vineyards
were not fully established until about 1670, the history of the estate
itself dates back to at least the 14th Century.
For many, Chateau Latour is the epitome of claret. Many would regard
it as the leading first growth, and in the eternal quest to find ‘the wine
of the vintage’ it is frequently Latour that comes out on top. One of its
strengths is said to be that it outperforms in weaker vintages, and so
when the weather has not been so favourable it is perhaps to Latour
that buyers of first growths should look first. The wine also has, as is
fitting for a first growth, a phenomenal propensity for ageing well, with
many tasters remarking that the 1899, 1900, 1928 or perhaps the 1945
come high in their list of candidates for favourite Latour vintage.

Château Margaux, Margaux 1er Grand Cru Classé

Exceptional building and the most important wine estate in the village of Margaux in the Bordeaux wine region,
and a First Growth in the 1855 classification. There is much potential for confusion since both Ch Margaux and
generic wine from the commune of Margaux are colloquially referred to as ‘Margaux’, but the former is likely to
cost many times more than the latter.
Ch Margaux was one of the four New French Clarets captured in the Anglo-French wars at the beginning of the
18th century, and sold in the coffee houses of the City of London (see Bordeaux, history). Thomas Jefferson on
his visit to Bordeaux in 1787 picked it out as one of the ‘four vineyards of first quality’. Sequestered in the French
Revolution after the execution of the owner, it was bought by the Marquis de la Colonilla in 1804 and rebuilt
246 in the First Empire style, by L. Combes, as we know it today - the grandest château of the Haut-Médoc. After
passing through several hands, shares were bought by a Bordeaux wine merchant, Fernand Ginestet, in 1925,
Château Latour 1999 and the family share was slowly increased to give his son Pierre Ginestet complete ownership in 1949. Also a

director who joined the estate in 1983 (coincidentally one of the property’s most successful vintages). In 1992,
in a complicated international deal involving Perrier mineral water, the Italian Agnelli family of Fiat motor cars
became involved in ownership of the estate, but Corinne Mentzelopoulos remained in charge and took a personal
stake in the property.

Pomerol
Château Pétrus
The Pomerol Appellation is comprised of small properties producing modest quantities of generally
excellent wines, at expensive prices. Pomerols are usually rich and full-bodied red wines, which blend
the aromas of black cherry, black currant and blackberry. These are well-structured and complex wines.
Château Petrus’ vineyards cover 5.5 acres and produce 35,000 bottles per year. Thanks to the astute
management of Christian Moueix and his team, Petrus is reputed to be the best Pomerol in the world.
Indeed, the processes used by Château Petrus have resulted in the creation of a wine characterized by an
intense, dark color, and by extremely delicate tannins.

wine exhibits a dark plum color and a somewhat monolithic, foursquare personality with notes of plums,
black cherries, licorice, and some herbs and damp earth. Medium-bodied, muscular, and tannic, but
283 284 lacking some charm and sweetness, it should age nicely for 12-15 more years and possibly be even
better than my score. Readers who buy it should not even attempt opening a bottle for at least 4-5 years.”

The wine was always distinctive, deep, and luscious with a richness, absolutely

red Bordeaux to have its malolactic fermentation completed in 100 per cent new

This is a wine that is made more in the style of California and Australia rather
than traditional Bordeaux. It is very ‘fruit-forward’ and has great richness. It is

Perhaps for the same reason, or to avoid splitting it up under French inheritance laws,
in 1821 she apparently sold it to a London banker, Sir Samuel Scott, for 1 million francs.
He and then his son were the nominal owners for over 40 years. But when the real

a Bordeaux syndicate, it was knocked down to Baron James de Rothschild of the Paris
