Professional Interests
I have had the opportunity to work in a few very diverse areas of professional n
ursing. These experiences have helped me to focus on four major areas of interes
t.
Leadership
* My most recent position as the director of a hospice house, has given me the a
bility to recruit and grow the staff development for all clinical, paraprofessio
nal, support and culinary staff. It also allowed me to work with some of the mos
t amazing staff I have had the pleasure of knowing. They have taught me the valu
e of servant leadership and the difference made in a patient's care when an inte
rdisciplinary team approach is utilized. The oversight responsibility for an 8.5
million dollar facility and its staff has taught me the importance of efficient
resource allocation. I have learned that quality and comprehensive care do not
have to be sacrificed in order to maintain the mission. One of the things I am
proudest of is our first Joint Commission survey results; zero deficiencies. M
ost importantly though, we were thanked daily by patients and families, for our
compassionate care.

Holism
* Serving as an L&D nurse put me in a position of facilitating births and unfort
unately sometimes the death of an infant. These very intense experiences led me
to thirst for the knowledge surrounding whole person health, and spirituality i
n nursing.
Being in charge of Labor and Delivery, Newborn and Postpartum Care, taught me to
stay calm in the face of potential emergencies, as well as the importance of be
ing fully present to patients and families during their most vulnerable times.
Sharing the responsibility of the med-surg floors gave me the required trial by
fire foundation that all new grads should experience.
Case Management
* Community Health homecare nursing, and growing a new MCH program enabled me to
develop leadership skills, public speaking skills, and a passion for program de
velopment that has served me well in all areas of my professional life.
* Assisting the marginalized, and sometimes observing them choose between food a
nd
medication; accessing local agencies that provided services for these clients, s
parked an interest in case management. Finally, managing a hospital based wellne
ss center gave me the ability to bring clients into a healthcare system that pro
vided services across the continuum. Parish Nursing addresses the needs of the w
hole person, mind, body and spirit. Coupled with an interest in leadership and c
ase management, being the Manager of Health Ministries enabled me to incorporate
the integration of faith & health.
