Hello and Good Morning Dr. Yasmin.

I am trilled to carry out the first task which is to write a description of how I currently deliver one of
my lesson topics in my school.

I have been teaching Science for Year 4 pupils and would like to share of the lesson taught to
them.

Topic: Investigating living things.

It is an hour lesson (7.40 am ~ 8.40 am), class: “Vivekanandar”

This lesson was conducted in the science lab as I have to use the teaching courseware to deliver
the lesson. My science lab is equipped with LCD projector and I don’t have to waste any time to
set up the Multimedia device.

Theme: Investigating Living Things.

Learning area: Living things have basic needs.

Learning objective: 1.1 – Understanding that human have basic needs.

Learning outcomes: Identify the basic needs of human.

Give reasons why humans need food water, air and shelter.

Previous knowledge: Pupils have learnt about types of meal.

Science process skills: Observing, communicating.

Vocabulary: basic needs, breath, breathe, shelter, hut, balanced diet.

The lesson was for the group of average and week pupils. Therefore, I have to spend more time
at “set induction” level (10 minutes) to catch their attention and to stimulate the pupils mind to be
ready to participate in the lesson.

The stimulus activity was to ask the pupils to jump a few times and to ask them to observe the
movement of their chest. This is where the vocabulary breath and breathe would be drilled. At this
level the participation of the female pupils was not encouraging therefore I have to ask them to
carry out another activity.

I have to introduce a game called “Basic Need Musical Chair. I grouped them into groups of 6 and
asked them to move around 4 stools. (Placed earlier in the middle of the class.) Each stool has a
label each. – chair no.1 is labeled ‘Air”, no.2 is labeled “Feed”, no.3 labeled “Water”, and no. 4
labeled “Shelter”. The music will be played and the pupils will circle the chairs and when the
music is stopped, they will sit on the stool nearest to them and write their name on it. This step
was repeated. The first pupil to have his/her name on all four stools will be the winner.

At the introductory level of the lesson, pupils will be shown power point presentation of the basic
needs of living things.

Pupils will be given task to carry out. (Worksheet would be given out). Pupils will watch the
presentation again and this time with the instruction by the teacher to fill in the blanks correctly
according to the presentation.
Until this level I would have used Teaching course ware (Power point presentation) and work
sheets. Of course the chairs and the labels and word cards prior to the lesson.

My teaching has involved a lot of question and answer and reflection of the pupils’ prior
knowledge before the lesson.

Throughout the lesson, pupils will follow instruction and carry out activities accordingly. It involves
observation, demonstration and participation of the teacher and the pupils together.

Reading aloud and calling out words aloud too took place.

By the end of the lesson, pupils are expected to identify the basic needs of human and give
reasons why humans need food water, air and shelter.

Pupil’s participation is the indication of their grasp of the lesson. Unfortunately, language
seems to be greatest hindrance for the pupils to participate effectively. Their prior knowledge too
was the stumbling block for the pupils to participate effectively.

These findings (lesson reflection) called for me to modify or change the teaching style and
teaching approach. Probably that is where I am lacking.

The lesson taught on that day, from my perspective was probably 50% successful.

My lesson has to focus more on remedial activities as the pupils are week. I may have to use
mother tongue (Tamil) in my teaching to make pupils understand better of the lesson.
