Welcome to Monash University.

opportunities to enrich the quality of your education. These opportunities may include the
chance to develop your knowledge and understanding of new cultures as well as sharing
your own culture with others.
At Monash, we understand that Muslim students have specific social, religious and cultural
needs. Consequently, Salaam Monash is published as a resource handbook for new Muslim
students in Victoria. This handbook will assist you with the process of settling and adjusting
to life in Australia. In addition, the staff at the International Student Support Unit are always
available to provide advice or assistance.

Religious facilities
Clayton campus
Centrally located on the Clayton campus, the Religious Centre comprises a large worship
and meeting area for the use of all religious groups. The Religious Centre (Building 9) has
prayer rooms for both brothers and sisters (brothers in G06a and sisters in G07) which are
open for daily prayers and equipped with Wudu facilities.
A mosque is located at 16 Beddoe Avenue, which is adjacent to the university. It has
separate washing facilities for men and women. Jum’ah starts at 1.15 pm and finishes just
before 1.50 pm.
In Clayton the mosque is administered by the Mosque Management Committee, contact
person is Mohamed Mohideen 9905 5512.
Clayton campus is one of the few Australian university campuses with a freestanding
Religious Centre. Situated in the heart of the campus, the centre comprises a large central
worship/meeting place for the use of all religious groups on campus. There is also an Islamic
Room in the centre open for daily prayers equipped with ablution facilities, prayer mats and
slippers.
Berwick, Caulfield, Gippsland, Parkville and Peninsula campuses

There are Muslim Prayer Rooms which provide washing facilities, prayer mats and slippers
(slippers not available at Berwick and Parkville) at the following campuses:

Monash University Islamic Society
The Monash University Islamic Society (MUIS) provides a Muslim students representative
body on the Caulfield, Clayton and Gippsland campuses. It runs various activities including:
Islamic study circle, Arabic classes, lectures and seminars and social gatherings.
The Islamic Society is open to Muslims and non-Muslims who are interested in increasing
their knowledge of Islam and receiving peer support from fellow Muslim students.

Halal food – on campus
Halal products are clearly marked with a halal symbol and are available at the following food
outlets:
Caulfield Please contact the Monash University Islamic Society on 9903 2525 for
further information on Halal food on the Caulfield campus.
Clayton Halal food is available from the Meeting Point located on the ground floor
of the Campus Centre (Building 10).
Laziza Kebab located under the Hargrave Library (Building 30) is a 100%
Halal Restaurant.
Pre-packed halal food is also available from Frank and Lily Lee Asian
Grocery Store next to STA Travel in the Campus Centre (Building 10).
Gippsland Regular trips (approximately once a month) to Melbourne halal suppliers
are organised by ISSU, ISA, MRS and campus Muslim group.
Halal chicken (full chickens and breast fillets) at the Deli Poultry (Mannys
Market) in Morwell.
You can also buy halal meat through Turkuaz Café, 23 Tarwin St, Morwell.

Family advice and support
Child Care
The Family and Child Care service assists parents to link into on-campus child care and
provides up-to-date computerized information on child care services throughout Victoria
including kindergartens, vacation care, out of school hours care, family day care, occasional
care, special needs services and nanny agencies. Services include:
Advice and referral on child care options and services (0 – 12 years) available on campus,
near work or home
Information on government fee assistance, rebates and resources on child care and family
issues
On-campus vacation care program for children aged 5 – 12 years (Clayton only)

Family Support Program
The International Student Support Unit at Clayton and Caulfield runs a Family Support
Program which is available to international students who are here with their families.
This program is available to students studying on all campuses.
The program aims to help partners and children of international students at Monash
University adjust to life in Australia. There are regular social gatherings and excursions to
places of interest in Victoria such as Puffing Billy, Gumbaya Park, Ballarat Sovereign Hill and
Mount Buller. These excursions provide an opportunity for international students with families
to meet together in a supportive social environment while providing interesting, economical
and fun activities. At this stage, the departure points for most outings will be the Caulfield and
Clayton campuses.

Ramadan is the name of the ninth and holiest month on the lunar Islamic calendar with its
duration being 29 or 30 days (depending on the sighting of the moon). During Ramadan,
the Muslims are to fast. The Islamic fast is total abstinence from food, drinks, smoking, and
sexual intercourse from dawn to sunset. Ramadan Tharaweeh prayers are performed at the
Monash University mosque in Beddoe Avenue
Eid Ul Fitr
At the end of the month of Ramadan, a festival is held called the Eid ul Fitr (literally the festival
to mark the break of fasting). This festival is celebrated on the first day of the tenth month
and lasts for three days. Family and friends gather for prayers and festive food.
Eid Ul Adha
The Eid of Sacrifice is in remembrance of the sacrifice of Prophet Abraham in which he
agreed to offer his son, Ismail as a sacrifice but was spared at the last moment by God.
This is celebrated on the tenth day of the twelfth month.

Prophet Mohamed’s PBUH
last sermon
(This sermon was delivered in the 6th Century AD at Mount Arafat in Mecca)
After praising and thanking God the Prophet Mohamed said,
“O People, lend me an attentive ear,
for I know not whether after this year I shall ever be amongst you again.
Therefore, listen to what I am saying very carefully
and take these words to those who could not be present here today.
O People, just as you regard this month (of Hajj), this day, this city as sacred,
so regard the life and property of every Muslim as a sacred trust.
Return the things entrusted to you to their rightful owners.
Hurt no one so that no one may hurt you.
Remember that you will indeed meet your Lord,
and that He will indeed reckon your deeds.
Allah has forbidden you to take usury[interest],
therefore, all interest obligations shall henceforth be waived
your capital is yours to keep.
You will neither inflict nor suffer any inequity
Allah has judged that there shall be no interest and
So all the interest that is due to Abbas, the son of Abdel Muttalib, is waived.
O People! The unbelievers change the calendar
so they can make allowed some things which Allah has prohibited.
With Allah, there are twelve months,
four of them are holy.
Three are in a row (the Hajj months)
And one comes alone between Jumada and Shaban.
Beware Shaitan, for the safety of your religion.
He has lost all hope that he will be able to lead you astray in big things,
so beware of following him in small things.
O People, it is true that you have certain rights with regard to your women
but they also have rights over you.
Remember that you have taken them as your wives
only under Allah’s trust and with His permission.
If they abide by your right, then to them belongs
the right to be fed and clothed in kindness
for they are your partners and committed helpers.
And it is your right that they
do not make friends with anyone whom you do not approve,
as well as never to be unchaste.

O People, listen to me in earnest, worship God,
say your five daily prayers,
fast during the month of Ramadan,
and give your wealth in charity
perform Hajj if you can afford to.
All mankind if from Adam and Huwwa,
an Arab has no superiority over a non-Arab
nor does a non-Arab have any superiority over an Arab;
also a white has no superiority over a black,
nor a black have any superiority over a white –
except by Allah-consciousness, piety and good actions.
Learn that every Muslim is a brother to every Muslim
and that the Muslims constitute one brotherhood.
Nothing shall be legitimate to a Muslim that belongs to a fellow Muslim
unless it was given freely and willingly.
Do not therefore, do injustice to yourselves.
Remember one day you will meet Allah and answer for your deeds.
So beware: do not stray from the path of righteousness after I am gone.
O People, no prophet or apostle will come after me,
and no new faith will be born.
Reason well, therefore, O People,
and understand my words that I convey to you.
I leave behind me two things,
the Qu’ran and my Sunnah;
if you follow these, you will never go astray.
All those who listen to me shall pass on my words to others
and those to others again;
and may the last ones understand my words better than
those who listen to me directly.
Be my witness, O Allah,
that I have conveyed Your message to Your people.
