Linear Equation in one variable

1. Find the three consecutive integers such that sum of four times the first and half of second is equal to
24 added to twice the third. [ 11 , 12 and 13 ]
2. The sum of two numbers is 110 . If the greater is divided by the smaller , the quotient is 5 and the
remainder is 8 . Find the number . [93 and 17 ]
3. In a two digit number , the digit at ten’s place is twice the digit at the units place . If we subtract 27
from the number , the digits change their places . Find the number . [ 63 ]
4. The denominator of a fraction is more than the numerator . If 1 is added to the numerator and 1 is
subtracted from its denominator , the fraction is 2/3 . Find the fraction . [ 3/7 ]
5. Madhu is 15 years older than her brother . In 3 years , she will be 8 times as old as her brother was
3 years ago. Find their present ages . [ 21 , 6 ]
6. There are some benches in a classroom . If 3 students sit on the bench , 3 students are left standing .
However if 4 students sit on each bench , 3 benches have no students on them . Find number of
students in the class . [ 48 ]
7. The number of students in class 9A is 10 more than the number of students in class 9B. If 20 students
are shifted from 9A to 9B , the number of students in 9B is twice the number of students left in 9A.
Find the number of students in both classes. [ 50 ]
8. The ratio of incomes of 2 persons is 9 : 7 and the ratio of their expenditures is 4 : 3. If each of them
saves Rs 2000 per month , find their monthly incomes . [ Rs 18000 , Rs 14000 ]
9. Sweets are distributed among some children . If each child receives 15 sweets , four are left over .

10. Krishna walks from her house to her school at a speed of 3 km/h and returns at the speed of 4km/h.
If she takes 21 minutes for total journey , find the distance between her house and the school .[ 600m ]
11. In an election for a corporation seat , there were two candidates. A total of 9791 votes were polled .
116 votes were declared invalid. The successful candidate got 5 votes for every 4 votes his opponent
had . By what margin did the successful candidate win ? [ 1075 ]
12. The distance between two stations A and B is 600 Km . Two trains start simultaneously one from A
and another from B. If the speed of one train is 48 km/h and of the other is 72 km/h , where will they
meet and at what time from starting ? [240km from A , 5 hours ]
13. A and B together can do a piece of work in 8 days . If A alone can do it in 12 days , in how many
days can B alone do it ? [ 24 days ]
14. A man invested partly in 5 % p.a and rest in 6% p.a . If his total yearly income is Rs 525, find his
investment in each .
15. The difference of the squares of two consecutive even natural numbers is 92 . Taking x as the smaller
of the two numbers , form an equation in x and hence find the larger of the two . [ 24 ]
16. The ages of A and B are in the ration of 9 : 4 . Seven years hence the ratio of their ages will be 5 : 3.

17. At a fair , a boy tries his skill in shooting . He was to receive 20 paisa for hitting the bull’s eye and
had to pay 8 paisa for missing the bull’s eye . He tried 50 shots but received only 20 paisa . How
many times did he hit the bull’s eye ? [ 15 ]
