The legislative branch has the power to make, change and repel laws.

legislative branch at the federal level?
This is where elected representatives meet to discuss and vote on
public issues.
5. What are representatives at the federal level called?
They are called Members of Parliament or MPs.
6. What are government "seats" and how many do we have in Canada
(according to your textbook)?

In 2000, there were 301 seats, 282 in 1984, 295 in 1988.
7. How is the total number of seats determined in the House of Commons?
The seats increase as the population of Canada increases.
8. What do MP's do regularly in the House of Commons?
MPs regularly discuss and debate issues and government policies.
9. What is the function of the Speaker of the House?
The Speaker of the House controls the debates.
10. What qualifications does the speaker need and how do they attain that
position?
He or she must then apply the rules of Parliament fairly and firmly to all
members, including the Prime Minister.

The main function is to make, change or repeal (remove) laws in the
areas given to it by our constitution.

A written proposal for a law

15. Who makes up the government of Canada?
The party who holds the greatest number of seats in the House of
Commons.
16. What functions does the leader of the party serve?
Prime Minister runs the country.
17. Who makes up "her Majesty's Loyal Opposition"?
All the MPs from the other parties.
18. Who becomes the Leader of the Opposition and what is this person's role?
The leaders of the second largest party
19. What is the role of the Opposition in government?
Is to ensure that the views of all Canadians are represented in
Parliament, especially those who did not vote for party that forms the
government.
20. What is question period and why is it a vital component in a democracy?
The time put aside for Opposition parties to raise issues and question
the government. The aim is to keep the government accountable for its
actions.
