INTRODUCTION
Depression is a disorder of major public health
importance in terms of prevalence, suffering, dysfunction,
morbidity and economic burden.
This disorder is more common in women than in men.
Reports from the Global burden of diseases estimates point
prevalence of depression to be 1.9% for men and 3.2% for
women. It is said that if the same demographic trend
continues , the burden of depression will increase to 5.7% of
total burden of diseases.
Alcohol dependence is another major public health
problem . Family of alcoholic is receiving much attention
from researchers ,clinicians and also lay public as it is
generally accepted that anyone living close to an
alcoholdependent will be psychologically stressed .
There are considerable number of anecdotal reports and
research findings that suggests individuals who are married to
alcohol dependents have poor overall physical and mental
health,(HomishG.G,etal2006, Mous,etal1998, Wiseman1991)
During course of time psychological distress mainly
depression and others like mood and anxiety disorders
continued to increase in female spouse of alcoholdependents.
( Buu A, Tempier R, Houss GB, Kessler,etal).
OBJECTIVES
A.? To
find out the prevalence of depression in spouses of
alcohol dependents.
B.? To
compare the prevalence of depression in spouses of
alcohol dependents with spouses of non alcohol
dependents.
METHODOLOGY
A.? Hundred spouses of malepatients who are admitted for
deaddiction in velankani deaddiction ward of father
muller medical college will be choosen as subjects.
B.? Hundred female healthy volunteers will be selected as
controls for study using purposive sampling technique.
Clinical assessment will be done by a trained psychiatrist.
IMPLICATIONS
Results of the study will imply need for assessment of
depression among spouses of alcohol dependents and reduce
the morbidity and mortality among these individuals.
