SO Standard 17359, Condition monitoring and diagnostics of machines General Guidelines, has been extensively revised and was issued in April 2011 as a second edition. The standard is the umbrella document for a series of International Standards relating to condition monitoring and diagnostics. The first edition of ISO 17359 was issued in 2003 and has been embraced by the condition monitoring industry, improving the quality and capability of condition monitoring implementations, systems and personnel, and strengthening the mutual confidence throughout the industry. This second edition builds on that framework and now includes nine different machine types with typical examples of fault and failure modes with their associated symptoms and measurement parameters. Condition-Based Maintenance (CBM) is recognised as a cost-effective strategy to improve the effectiveness of maintenance programmes, allowing maintenance to be proactive rather than reactive. To avoid poor application of CBM, factors such as fault and failure modes, criticality and cost-effectiveness must be considered, and using the wrong maintenance technique can waste time, money and resources - often with no effect on improving or maintaining availability. Key steps to implementing effective CBM in line with best practice ensure optimum selection, application and management of Condition Monitoring (CM) techniques. Examples of fault and symptom diagrams are now included in the new standard for the following machine types: Electric motors Steam turbines Aero gas turbines Industrial gas turbines Pumps Compressors Electric generators Rotary internal combustion engines Fans For these machine types, the new standard gives a matrix of 27 applicable CM and performance parameters including:
Acoustic emission Current Efciency (derived) Oil (tribology) Output power Pressure Resistance Speed Temperature Thermography Ultrasonics Vibration Recommendations are included on useful information to record in addition to the measured parameter values, such as: ID, type, speed, power, mounting, coupling and instrumentation details etc. The new edition also includes an Annex (see table 2) giving an overview of the whole range of condition monitoring International Standards grouped by their application areas including: Overview Techniques Diagnostics & Prognostics Data management Training Applications Also included is an extensive bibliography of machine acceptance testing International Standards.
OVERVIEW SCHEMATIC
An overview schematic of the implementation procedure from ISO 17359:2011 is shown in Figure 1. Each of the steps is explained and expanded in the new edition.
