LEATHER GOODS
Introduction : Leather is a versatile material* and leather goods are characterised by infinite variety. Leather
products serve more than 300 different purposes for personal, industrial and defence needs. The leather
goods industry is subdivided into footwear,, leather goods, fur based goods, leather garments, dress, gloves,
industrial gloves, industrial leather, saddlery and sports goods. The products made of leather are of great
comfort to men and women. They last for long periods and they look tidely and are very fashionable. There has
been a growing demand for leather goods in india during the past two decades and there is also a marked
improvement in the export of leather goods from India.Uses and Applications : Leather goods like purses, hand
bags, file covers, diary covers, gloves, suit cases, brief cases, travelling bags, shoes, chappals are exten-
sively used by a wide range of people for different purposes.Market Survey : The demand for leather goods in
India has been rising constantly during the recent past. Rapid urbanisation, change of occupational pattern,
increased purchasing power and increased fashion consciousness, all these factors made the leather goods
indispensable in modern mans life.
Indian leather goods have a great demand in international market also. This is indicated by the recent upsurge
in leather goods exports from India. With its largest live-stocks in the world and huge manpower at cheaper rates,
still has excellent opportunities for growth in this field by adopting modern technology and better utilisation of
feed stocks and manpower.

Process of Manufacture :Designing is one of the most important operations in the production of leather goods
like bags, purses, diary covers, file covers etc. because fashion trend, workable operations, suitability and
availability of raw materials, product comfort, economic acceptability by the consumer, profitability of the
producer are to be taken into account. This involves the catering to the consumer the right product at a right
price. The designing starts at the consumer door and therefore continuous information regarding trend is
necessary to develop a range of new product designs. This may be achieved, by a regular market research
programme.
Pattern Making: The method applied in making bags, purses, gloves or other leather goods is to work up the
style in a sketch, determination of product size and location of seams, method of construction of number of
parts etc. The bags and purses can be made in many designs. But the simplest bag is the bag with least number
of seams perhaps only two side seams. A bag with ten numbers of seams consumes greater quantity of leather,
but a fashionable bag with a number of seams can be made by using small pieces of leather. But in the second
case the labour charges will be more. Lining. Lining may be done only at the under side of the hand bag flaps
or it can be done to the whole bag. A flap lining is cut from same leather to the size of the flap and then sewn
to the flap by a machine inside out to. the Lining of a whole bag simply requires facing each piece of outside
leather with a piece of lining leather, flash side to flash side.Dividers: They separate inside of the bags or
other goods into section. A divider is cut as a matching piece to the product and sewn at the appropriate place
along with the seams at the time of sewing of seams.Seams: Most bag seams are sewn inside out by sewing
grain side to grain side either by hand or by machine. Side and bottom seams should not be double stitched as
this has a tendency to tear the leather. Rivets may be used as reinforcements at the points where the straps
are attached to the bags.Straps: There are many variations in strap style and in the method in which straps
attached to the bag. Normally hand bags have round straps and shoulder bags have flat straps, but there are
no hard and fast rules and straps can be designed to suit the modern trends.Stitching: It is Usually done by
a leather sewing machine. Some parts are sewn by hand if they cannot be sewn by machine.Manufacture of
slacks is same as that of purses, bags and covers. The leather is checked for uniform thickness, holes and fly
cuts if any. Then it is cut according to the design and sewed with a stitching machine. After stitching they are
turned inside out. They are ready for packing and despatching.

The entrepreneurs are often perplexed with certain critical problems. It is part of entrepreneur's ability to
constrain those problems and eradicate the faults. In such case the entrepreneurs and industrialists without
making any delay should take advantage of Practical Project Execution Know How Report, which will simplify
the procedure for assessing market potential, investment decision making, getting various Govt, approvals,
registration, letter of intent, S.I.A. registration etc. and loan clearance from financial institutions/Banks.
However these Practical Project Execution Know-How Reports can help entrepreneurs to expedite the decision
making at corporate level and in actual setting up the project. ,
